REMINGTON 700 - One of the Best All Around Rifles?

This would be my """guess""" and a in my opinion only guess since I don't know anything about the best of the best... So here's 1 of the many loooooong shots I'll take at it...

Remington was the first in the Americas starting back 1815/16 if I recall,,, that's 205 years ago... Probably one of America's first factories on top of that...

"""Purhaps""" they started building a loyal fan base from day one of the introduction that has continued to present day...

Who would not like to own one,,, Remington Country,,, and all sorts of saying and logos...

It must of worked since there sales were threw the roof in the hay-days and they slowly struggle to keep afloat in todays market times...

Let's face it,,, the BDL wood stocks look fantastic,,, they were a chunk of change in there day,,, not as much as Weatherbys,,, but they were alot more then the Husqvarnas and Parker Hails,,, the Mauser Action rifles were plentiful and all so sold in record numbers...

The Model 700 action became the game changer that folks were looking for,,, 5 million +++ in sales kind of ment they got it right,,, and yes,,, they had some down falls along the way,,, but they weathered the storms...

My Dad or Uncle owned one so the next of kind jumped on the band wagon since they are good enough to hunt with,,, there no reason why someone can't throw a few bucks into one too make it a world class top level shooter,,, again,,, don't get me right or wrong,,, this can be done with any firearm of anyone's choosing...

But at the end of the day it kinda of boils down to one thing,,, does the eye of the beholder choose to do build a rifle of ### brand,,, or are they stead fast on the Rule of Remington Country... Ha

That I don't know since I follow my own leed...

Remington is Home Baked Apple Pie and Ice Cream,,, its grass roots country dirt as folks can get...

Either your on board or your not...
At least in the eyes of our peers if that makes any difference to a person...

Let's face it,,, Remington Country irons work,,, good enough at the price point with options to improve on it """if""" we choose to customize it more towards our tastes...

Again,,, I can't say it's the best of the best since I've never owned a $$$ rifle,,, but for a few bucks less I got into the game,,, when I had some extra funds I improved each of my County units,,, not because I had to,,, it was that I wanted to since I wanted something to fit my needs and wants...

I'm old school,,, I like wood and iron,,, just me i guess...

The above is only a guess since I practic every day being wrong,,, I own my fualts and hopefully I """don't""" learn from them... LOL...

If I can't be my self and wrong,,, then I don't want to play,,, those of us that don't play follow our own paths in life,,, we're normally the type of folks that take on rifles like Remington and push them to there limits to find out if they will shoot...

I have 3 of them,,, there not the best of the best,,, nor are they the worst of the worst,,, one thing I do know,,, the rifles I own and had built will out shoot my skills on most days...

I've owned alot of irons over the years,,, just happens to be that I'm a Remington addict that can't keep my hands off them... There frugal in my budget,,, fun to use,,, build off of,,, and enjoy...

Just me i guess...

As to the best of the best is only relevant to the eye of the beholder,,, all I can say when I hear that saying is,,, I hope I never own one since I like the idea of just getting by...

Second string or following along is good enough... LOL

Cheers from the North

Mcdonalds sells a lot of cheese burgers. That doesn’t make them high quality.

No but they sure do the job and fill an empty belly for a good price since 1948 don't they which is what we have here with the 700.
Sorry but I have not heard a rifle of any make/model mentioned so far I would class as HIGH QUALITY good quality yes
Blue collar affordable guns that work for 99% of their owners nothing more
How much would you like to bet that there has been more big game taken with a model 700's than any other rifle ever produced
Why is that ???

What does that say about your cheeze burger :) would your like to upsize LOL

Cheers

Hello CGN,

I am looking to acquire as close to a "do it all" or an "all purpose" rifle as I can. I know there is no "one and done" rifle but something close is the goal. I think I have it narrowed down to the venerable Remington 700 chambered in the likewise tried and true 308. I looked at several other rifles over the 700 but this just seems to be such a solid, field proven rifle that I haven't found much else as universally recommended. Perhaps I missing something? As an aside, the 308 vs 30-06 debate has plenty of reading material available but if you really want to chime in on that subject here as well please feel free.

Basically, I am after a rifle that is durable and field proven. Deer hunting will be the primary function but the firearm should be capable of taking just about anything in North America. That said, there are not many polar or grizzly bears in my area but moose should be doable. I am not looking at huge shooting distances. The rifle will also see range time. I guess utility is the word I am looking for.

Long story short, over the years there have been a million variations of the 700 released. Again, utility, durability and ease of maintenance would be a bonus. I am thinking a used firearm will be preferred but new is not out of the question. Which sub-models would you recommend?

Thanks, CGN.

Over 330 posts... have you figured out the best answer yet?

The 700 is the strongest and safest 2 locking lug action ever made. No other two locking lug action seals up the chamber as well if a catastrophic case failure occurs. It's superb accuracy has been established for over 50 years. It is reasonably priced. The is no other model that has as many aftermarket accessories available.

Yep but it seems we are talking to our selves or a lot of wood here
Cheers

I guess that is the biggest question that I have. We have established that the Remington 700 may be the strongest receiver in production. Much of that is attributed to its three rings of steel. So it is curious that every engineer that has redesigned it has removed that feature. Why is that? I’d suspect that argument may have held water in 1962. I’m not sure it’s valid anymore.

Aside from my dislike of the X-Mark trigger I’m not sure where I have “degraded” the Remington 700? I’m just not sure what makes it so great. And no one seems to be able to answer that question.

I will hazard a guess that engineers who redesign any action need to make enough changes to new patterns that they cannot be sued for patent infringement. And since the strength/three rings of steel is the area that you find the deviation from the original, maybe that attribute is what does in fact make the remingtons great. Again these are just my suppositions. I do enjoy my remingtons.

WOW I am impressed. NOT
I can only guess your piddly little list was to scare me or impress me was it LOL
Well for one I don't work for certain people and you would be on the top of that list and two with a mechanical engineering background and two red seal tickets in heavy industrial and manufacturing and 30 years around cnc equipment I am sure I could struggle by LOL

Do you ever realize how stupid you are making your self look here. NO one cares about your few 70's and what BS you rant to degrade 700's

Too bad you just didnot buy a vintage BDL 700 leave it alone and shoot it out of the box like I did and many many others did the same

At first I thought you were young and new to the sport so figured Ok the comments are expected but somewhere you said you were old , like me so now we know what is really going on LOL and I cannot fix that

Try real hard to grasp one thing here OVER 5 MILLION SOLD

That doesn't happen with junk regardless if you like the 700 or not so go away and start a new thread for your 70's and leave the rest of us talk here about our 700's and how they really work not how the internet tells you they do

Which from those that own them is VERY WELL OUT OF the BOX as PURCHASED

Maybe in another decade or 2 there will be 5 million ruger americans or salvage axles sold, does it make them great just from sales numbers?

They could not sell that combined in 500 years
Another decade or two in canada we will be lucky to have firearms the way were are going let alone still buying them new
Cheers

Those who first altered the 700 extractor system did it to accommodate the 6mm PPC case. In their laziness only installed part of the Sako extractor system... and it was no problem until there was a case failure... then all hell broke loose. There have been at least one death and several injuries with Sako extractors blowing out on severe case failure. This is very old news in the Benchrest world.

I think the vast majority of those who do the conversion today do it for the money and could care less about weakening the 700 design.

Handloaders should be extremely careful when using a 700 with the Sako extractor... professionally I will not do that conversion and personally I wouldn't own one...

Here is how the Sako extractor system works in a Sako... with the 'bolt guide' actually working as a deflector when a case blows up... a feature those converting 700's do not install.

Come on... I just had one for lunch today...Angus Bacon Cheeseburger and it was excellent...

Just because they got the right mix of sawdust, msg and sugar to make it taste good, doesn’t mean it’s high quality food. It fills a void. Just like the 700. Nothing more.

I guess I'll have to say... Angus Bacon Cheeseburger and it filled a void...
