I am doing a build on a new Remington 7600, 22" .308. It'll be a "generalist" rifle. After I test it, if it's OK, I'm going to have the barrel chopped to 18.5" and threaded to 5/8" x 24 for an A2 bird cage.

I'll keep the OEM irons and run a PA 1-6X FFP illuminated scope with a .308 ACSS reticle in low QD rings.

Sling will be a two point. Maybe keep it simple and run it off a barrel band at the front.

I will be trying out a Mambamag magazine in it for reliability. Otherwise I will just stock up on Remington 4 rounders.

For spare parts I assume the weak link is the plastic dust cover. If anyone knows of a source for metal dust covers like what Numrich has on their website (out of stock) I'd appreciate any tips. if it's not available I'll pick up a spare plastic cover or two.

If anyone knows the proper O ring size for the pump body, please let me know.

If there are any other parts I should keep in the kit, please let me know.

Thanks for any advice or tips!

Mesa Tactical “Lucy”. It’s an adapter plate so you can run Remington 12 gauge stocks on the 760/7600. I picked up one and it lets me run the Magpul SGA stock. That way you can adjust LOP and comb height (cheek riser) for your scope. Traditionally the 7600’s have a very low comb height like a shotgun, and if using a scope you wind up with a “chin weld”.

Thanks KePet! Is this the one?

If I have the barrel shortened to 18.5" i assume it'll still be long enough to put a folder stock on it and remain OAL compliant?

A 20 gauge 870 stock will fit a 760/7600 with no further modifications required.

This is a Remington manufactured pepper laminate 20 gauge stock that I got from Numrich a dozen year ago now.

Rodger at RK Custom (RIP) put a 18" carbine barrel in 30-06 on this rifle for me and it's one of the most accurate rifles I own.

That's cool that someone is making adapters, not sure if S&J is but I think they did at one point.

I made one quite a few years ago using one of S&J's early 870 sling plates, just had to file down the male part of the plate until it fit the 760/20G profile.

Yep, that’s the one. And yes again, even with an 18.5” barrel you’ve got lots of length if you decide to go with a folder.

What's the word on extra magazines? Any compatibility issues to watch for?

Obviously there's the short vs. long issue, but I run into more complaints about mag fitment than I was expecting. Is it a thing, or just internet grumbling?

I’ve never had a mag issue with my 7600. Similar mag on my 7400 and no issues there either. What have you heard?

Thanks bush1, that's what I'd like to hear - I came across claimed fitment problems, feeding problems.

There are plastic baseplate vs. metal baseplate versions though, right? Everyone prefers metal...

I’ve never encountered figment issues with any 760/7600 magazines. The feeding issues that you may be thinking of were/are with the 740/742/7400 line - and yes, they are real in the semi’s.

As for baseplates? My mags are the older style, bought at gun shows, and don’t even have a baseplate. But, if you are buying new ones with baseplates I would guess that metal would be preferable. If he decides to run the Bamamag he really shouldn’t have to worry about it.

Agreed, there’s certainly been feeding issues with those rifle and they’ve gotten a bad rep at times and some have even called them jam-omatics. It was rarely a mag issue though and mostly dirty receiver slides and gummy blowback piston areas. Our local gunsmith can turn a jamomatic into a perfectly good hunting rifle in no time. He removes the barrel and gives it a good going over…

I'd skip the bird cage and leave the bbl at 20" for better handling.

Don't fret too much about the plastic dust cover. I've never have any trouble with them.

I'd have the trigger worked and a thin pad added.
