Remington 870 Tac-14s are back!

Update on my Tac-14 Hardwood:

I was able to get out today and put another 50 rounds through the gun …. and no hiccups.

She is working beautifully now! :dancingbanana:

Here is what I did ….

  • I polished the chamber with steel and copper wool on a drill.
  • Swapped out the Remington +1 mag extension for an S&J +1 extension.
  • I did cut one coil from the safety spring and so that the safety can be engaged/disengaged with less pressure. (I have done this to all my 870s.)
  • And the sling plate on the S&J extension makes a very audible click when moving back and forth and hitting the barrel. And when I am out in the forest still hunting and stalking I don’t like these kind of noises. They just spook game. So, I created a little hood out of nylon webbing that is wedged between the barrel and the sling plate. Again, something I have done to all my 870s with an S&J mag extension.

Voila … and here she is ….

Has anyone removed the tabs inside their mag tube yet? Debating whether to drill them out or try to pressure them back in, so I'm curious what others have done.

thanks OfaustusO for showing us your three finger loop on a sling. i admire some one who thinks out side the box. i used to find these tac 14 shockwave type guns as being some what hard to control but am growing fond of them when properly set up. i like the fact that they are a slim short firearm that slings and carry's easily.

I've really grown to love the platform. A handstop on the forend is a must for me - and preferably not just an edgy sling plate - but the biggest difference comes from wearing a glove on the shooting hand. Becomes an incredibly agile and capable platform.

Thanks for sharing. All this 14” love sure looks like fun!

Not quite a 14” but both my boys have their 870’s sorted out with 14”. I’ll just have to stick with a factory 18” sighted barrel for my range shooting.

I bought the XS Sights swage tool and swaged oput the dimples on my Tac-14 Marine. I was worried that the plating might chip .... but no ... it worked out fine. And it wasn't difficult to do ....

Last year I finally got two 870 built the way I wanted them, one 12G and one 20G. The 20 was a lot more work because the accessories selection just wasn't there for the smaller frame guns, it took years to get what I wanted. The 12 was a 870 exp magpul edition, which was pretty good as it came, but I did the spring, safety, follower, big dot, etc. Then in November I had a house fire, and they got fkrd.

I recently bought a pair of Tac-14s to replace them. I've been compiling parts to do the upgrades. The 20 came with a Magpul forearm, and is getting a full size Magpul stock as well. The 12G is the hardwood with extension, so I think I will leave the shorty grip on it, and maybe add a recoil strap, haven't had time to shoot either yet. I got them both from CSC, tehy were the best prices at the time, 20G $675, 12G $800.

That’s a simple solution, I’ve only seen the large dent raiser version brownells sells. The one you have would be super easy to make on the lathe, I used an appropriate sized deep well socket that I tapered on the one end. Lots of lube as well.

Tac-14 Update:

My Tac-14 journey is taking quite some detours …. yeahhhh ….

Ok, that Tac-14 that I bought … I tried to shoot groups at 50 meters with it … and I could not hit anything with it …. :-(

That receiver is drilled and taped for a rail/scope mount …. And the little screws that fill the holes were enough to change the sight picture to a degree that I could hit the barn … but not more … :-(

I then decided to buy an 870 Police with a 14 inch barrel with rifle sights and a fixed Modified choke. And today I went out to the range and to sight in the gun and see what it could do at 50 meters.

As a side note, I also bought 250 Score Competition slugs. They shot well out of two other of my 870s … both 18 inch barrels …. One with a fixed Improved Cylinder choke and the other with a Modified Remchoke.

So I get out to the range …. shoot a couple of rounds of Score slugs and somehow that gun is all over the place … and I am scratching my head … “What the f*** is going on? Did I drink too much coffee this morning?” And I was only shooting at 30 meters. I am checking if the sights might be loose … checking all kinds of things …

And after a couple of tries I count the shots and holes in the target …. and then a light bulb went on!

5 shots fired and 9 holes on target!

So, that is when I realized that those Score Competition slugs …. (and which are shooting nicely out of two other of my 870s) … that the wads are separating with this particular gun and which has a fixed Modified choke. And with the wads separating … those slugs are not stabilized any more … and they are tumbling all over the place.

I then switched back to my trusted Sellier & Bellot slugs and I was able to shoot a decent group again at 50 meters.

Now what lesson did I learn today?

If a particular slug shoots well out of one gun … or two … or three, … there is no guarantee it will shoot well out of another. You will only know once you tried it!

And here she is ... Tac-14 RS ... an 870 Police with 14" barrel and rifle sights:

I will get that barrel threaded for chokes this winter … and if I can find a slug that works with that threaded barrel …. then hey, I might even give it a try at 100 meters.

The Tac-14 100 meter challenge … :)

p.s.: For those that are wondering what the Score slugs look like, here a link:

farmer47, well some dealers have 870 Police models in stock with 14" barrels with rifle sights. I bought the whole gun.

FOC is just one example and where I bought mine ...

I swapped out the stock and forend ... and I will be selling the Tac-14 that I bought a while ago ... and which now is wearing the Police Speedfeed stock ...

Bumping this thread
I picked up a tac 14 last week to use as a bush camping gun. I have a couple parts on the way (+1 mag extension with the sling attachment, Wilson combat safety etc). I have a couple questions:

Mine has the polymer shockwave grip with no sling point. What’s been the standard way of attaching a sling point to it? Just drill a pilot hole and screw one in? Or is there a better way?

The one I have came with the magpul fore end, Will this interfere with the front sling plate on the mag extension? It looks like it would be pretty close. (I suppose I’ll find out when the extension arrives but I wouldn’t mind knowing beforehand).

And finally, has anyone found a suitable bag/scabbard or anything else for carrying this guy? It doesn’t fit in my hiking bag :( and all the ones I’ve seen leave part of the firearm exposed, I’d prefer to have the entire thing concealed in a bag which I could attach to the exterior of my hiking backpack.
