Now now Rohan...

You should be able to use ballistic tables to adjust your scope to the proper point of aim... then just go at it!

Can I get a bit of a break:redface:? I'm fairly new and I haven't shot my rifle much; I really don't know how it shoots yet. How about I get to sight it in, wait like 10 minutes and then do it?

Hey Rohan,

I'm new to this too... and I am also shooting Win USA... but out of a savage 12FV...

We'll be the rookies in our own league! What would a competition be without a bit of smack talk!

I'll post my target when the rifle gets back from the smith (it's getting its new stock bedded).

Well I shot the Match today, but haven't taken pictures of the targets yet. That sure as hell wasn't a good session! I forgot gloves, my shooting mat and a bean-sock combined with the fact that it was -1C, I was in a hurry (hardly any light left) and I wasn't able to take my time, and lastly the fact that I shot like crap.

Really? I always thought (and read) that you wanted bone on bone, as the muscle will not tire or twitch (i.e. when shooting prone).

-Rohann
What you might be thinking of is you want your body to be supported by bone.IE when standing, legs shoulder width apart, knees solid, elbows tucked into you body so that the muscle in your arms is not supporting the weight of the rifle much.Same goes for kneeling and sitting.
However, when you are resting the rifle on something, including yourself, you always want the rifle on something soft. When you fire it will move more and make it harder to bring back into line for another shot if you don't.

Well I went out and shot the match today although Rohann is crying about a -1, it was a tropical -21 here this morning when I did the shoot, couldnt find any excited shooting partners though, Also someone stoled all our sandbags so had to shoot bypod free hand. I was hopeing to do better but still happy with my results. My rounds and rifle dont realy come together until 200+yrds so with the cold and the ammo I was quite happy until I blew an easy shot on the know your limits......that one hurt. Was hopeing to score at least 50 on that.

Anyway here's the rundown

Rifle: Is a custom built .300 WM on a Dakota 76 action, Mcmillan A5 stock, Versa Pod, Canjar double set trigger, Custom built muzzle break. TPS Rings and Warne Base 20MOA topped off with a Leupold Mark4 6.5-20X with TMR rectical. All done by HWSNBN...Can't blame the rifle...all misses were me!!

Load
70.5 grains of H4831SC
200gr SMK's HPBT
Federal GM215M Primers
Nosler .300WM match brass

Now for the pics.

Here's a pic of our prone benches and rifle on it.

Ohh ok, thanks for the clarification. That's strange; I could have sworn I read something about bone on bone in a Carlos Hathcock book, but it may have been that you shouldn't rest bone on bone. I'll try that out though.

LRC: Haha well you sure as hell did a lot better than I did. Thing is, I've never really shot in cold weather, let alone with this rifle. I did learn some stuff though; my first, truly cold-bore shot is normal, but when the barrel's slightly warmed up, it always strafes about an inch to the right. When sighting in the rifle beforehand, however, I shot a nice half-inch grouping after shooting and adjusting a few times.

When is the rifle most accurate? In colder weather such as this, is it better to shoot, and continue shooting before the barrel completely cools down (wait about 1min in between shots)? Or is it better to shoot completely cold-bore?

-Rohann

I will Get Will to post mine.....I did about as good as you....-18 and windy cold hands and shooting suck ass....we will do a Redo of this match when its warmer too,the next will be a five shot group sitting postion, slings are good to go 100 yard target on Bin Ladins head but we will do that after all the other targets get posted

The rifle is always accurate, its downfall is the man behind it, me included. In cold weather you have denser air so lower velosities down range. I notice as much as 3MOA difference between summer and cold winter. The art is knowing what your rifle does in different conditions and compensating. I had a wind today but at 100 yrds should not have been much of a factor other than I was cold but all comes into play. Try for consistancy in any weather and you should get results I was lucky on my first "cold Bore shot" that it hit inside the target I was expecting around 1" low. All my other shots through the targets were holdover corrections based on previous impact and estimates on timeing wind gusts. As you can see I made mistakes, my fault not the rifle. I rapid fired the round as it was cold laying there so I loaded singles, fired, looked, loaded adjusted fired etc..etc.... through out the round, warmer weather I would have probably taken more time.

Is it better to shoot completely cold bore?????? with a precision built rig I dont believe in cold bore, or first shots being any different than any other follow up shot in a group. I do believe that heating up a barrel makes a big difference over time and you should rest your rifle. but in precision built rifles I havent noticed any difference in impact from 1st round through a 5 shot group if shot properly. Today I fired the round in a fairly fast succesion without heating up the barrel, but -21 seems to help that alot, wouldnt do it at +21.

Look forward to the next challenge and It was fun, I can see this taking off and leading to a get together shoot. Great Idea Jamie.

What I should have said was "when is the rifle most consistent?" The reason I shot like crap was mostly due to the fact that I haven't learned how my rifle shoots and obviously my shooting ability: I know I pulled a few, and I wasn't all that steady either.
So if you're looking to do a grouping test, or looking for a grouping that's as consistent as possible, is there a "norm" when it comes to how long you should wait between shots? I think I understand what you're saying though.

I do need to take the ammo variable out as well; I was shooting Federal SP rounds that were visibly inconsistent. I gotta buy a reloader!

EDIT: I re-read your post, and it basically answered all my questions before. Thanks for the info!

LRC, Nice shooting! Cold or not, next time you can throw your game face on and stop playing with us!

When I get a scope back on my HS and get it zeroed out, I'll join in.

I alway's have my game face on, and never hold back, it's the rest of my body that doesnt co-operate sometimes, Sometimes I amaze myself and others and sometimes I look like a total idiot just learning to shoot.:p Im happy with what I did today, And it was a fun shoot so win or loose I win. Hope everyone else is in this for the fun. Im going to mount my M-24 TIS sling onto my rifle now, cause at 17lbs I need all the help I can get to make it look like im not shooting a shotgun when in standing position on the next shoot.
