Request: lightweight 'survival rifle'.

The second one up from the bottom looks pretty cool to me.

If the stock could fold forward, covering a folding trigger, that thing would pack up real nice, especially if it had a 16" barrel.

Throw a set of rugged peep sights on there and its perfect.
 
I would not over look a nice short Rem700 with good bottom metal that takes AICS mags in 223 with a nice 1/4 optic and back up irons I will gladly carry a slightly heaver gun over a 22
 
Very much on the same page as the OP. Please update with your findings, certainly a niche... though many appear to have missed your original intent.
 
MBP, I am guessing you want a break action because it can be disassembled and there is no bolt to get in the way and worry about when it's apart. Are you dead set against one though? A stevens 300f or a norinco backpacker with a rigged up little stock would be an excellent alternative if you are handy.
 
I have a Ruger 10\22 with a Butler creek folding stock, when folded fits in a back pack. Don't know if I'd shoot at a grizzly with it lol probably just make the bear more pissed off. Could aim for an eyeball I suppose lol. 25 shot clip , could empty that into the bear , not sure if it would kill him though.
 
there used to be the remington model 600 .308 mohawk , ventilated. I had it was an awesome little rifle

Although given the choice, she probably wouldn't have picked a .22 lr as the desired calibre for the situation.
 
I'm not en expert by any means but I second the opinion of someone that already has said that I would not bet my or any of my family life on the LR22 caliber as a survival rifle, I think the bare minimum would be .223 I have Ruger scout rifle in 308 and feel very comfortable walking around bush, and don't have to worry about the shot placement in a sudden or unexpected encounter with the wolf, bear or anything for that mater just mine 2 cents , and if 6 LBS is too heavy hit the gym buddy You shouldn't be walking in the bush...LOL
 
After all is said and done, you really can't beat the AR-7. I have the old Charter Arms model. It works just fine. Super light at under 3 lbs, all self contained and it floats. I bring mine everywhere when I'm in the bush. Fits very easily in my pack. If I use CB longs, it quieter than a pellet gun and far more deadly than any high powered pellet gun. CB longs are too light in power to actuate the semi auto action on it's own. So you just work the bolt each time like a bolt gun.

There are a host of after market parts you can buy if you want to mod it. This includes full steel barrels and after market magazines, etc.

i want a break action because:

1. its bombproof
2. single shot is perfectly fine
3. will cycle any ammo
4. gain about 4-5" of barrel length over a comparable semi or bolt action
5. inherently takedown (usually)
6. lighter

as for .410 - id much rather have a .22. i guess im the only person on earth that doesnt think the .410 is some uber survival/self-defense/SHTF/multipurpose round :)
i have zero interest in a .410. 20 gauge is much more interesting.

How about an AR-5. (they were never made as a production item). Would be da bomb. With an Ace adapter you could conceivably use .22lr. :D

a 22 in any configuration would not be my choice in calibers. remington makes a 308 bolt action, model # escapes me must now. it is light as hell, short 22 inch barrel, will kill anything in north america save the great bears, and can be used for self defense. it will also reach out and kill big game when you are hungry, wet, cold tired, and do not feel much like tracking.
