Review of PolyTech M14 2009 Series (Ellwood Epps) $ 529 Black Synth Stock

So, for those not used to "tweak" the M14 problems...(OR like me, no real talent or tools to play with it...)
Norc 2007 or Polytech ?
I like a good shooter right out of the box :D

Hungry here: They are both decent. I discovered that my Poly needs about 2 shims to tighten up the gas cylinder assy, but frankly, it shoots really well without it. I just lubed up the rifle and shot it after degreasing. I'm starting to really like this Poly M14. ;)

This thread is dangerous. With tuition just due, and flight school in the future... Should i really be reading things that make me want to buy stuff? Also, who makes a quality scope mount for the m14? (Just in case)

Are the ones from moving target the same ones as the Epps ones?

Just fired the Poly M14 yesterday. Go and read up on it on page 1 of this thread. Wow was it ever Ping'ing brightly. My other Springfield M1A's and USGI M14's that were tightened up never did that.

Had a chance to examine Hungry's rifle at Connaught. It is impressive. Ran the rear sight all the way up, tried the thumb test, couldn't push it back down. Windage adjustments are a "snack, snack", nice and firm.
:( Sadly, my hearing is such that I can only imagine the delightful pinging. :(
Still don't understand the foolish setscrew and occasional indexing issue - but the fix is easy.
Looks as if Bell Lifestyle has a winner, let's see how long the supply lasts.

-1 on Ellwood Epps' stock. I just ordered one.

And me a poor student. :D

So Hungry... I live not too far from Connaught. Any chance of a clinic there in the near to middling future?

Edit: and not even 30 minutes later... The rifle has shipped :) thats service.

I will be doing another M14 clinic at Vankleek Hill GC once again on the 3rd Sat in March. Tail end of March break for me. Stay tuned! Ensure you get registered when I confirm (likely sometime in Jan/Feb) not like the Northern Ont folks... we've only got 1 person registered so far.

Just got mine in the mail today, took it apart & I am still in the process of cleaning it.
It has a real tight gas system no shims needed, you probably could not get one in there & the trigger is better out of the box than my Norinco was & is after working with it at the Calgary M-14 clinic, Although there is no Ring Ring, not even close, but that is to be expected from most of them I'm guessing.

There seems to be all sorts of threads regarding Norc vs Poly and "yer d!ck will fall off it you buy....." posts.

My intuition would have me believe that all of these M14s were made by the same manufacturer. The parts were gathered and made into rifles at some point and refinishing(all the parkerizing and such done in many many different batches).

Norinco and Poly are simply EXPORT companies, not straight manufacturers.

These current Poly rifles seem to have a darker, richer parkerizing coat along with a synthetic stock but I would highly doubt if the mechanical bits are very different at all(including assembly issues)

I think Hungry already mentioned this....if you want to quick fast go-to, get a Poly. If you intend to procure your own M14 stock(be it USGI FG, wood, Boyd), you might want to save a little and get the Norcs floating around.

Going abit off topic. When I was cleaning the cosmoline off my M14, I just dropped the whole bolt into the basin. Lots small air bubbles tells me water got into the bolt. I'm afraid the insides maybe rusting. Should I open up my bolt to dry it? Really worried cause the bolt face has developed a tiny bit of rust. So far I just put lots of CLP on it.

Hungry here: I'm always advocating washing out your bolt with Brake Cleaner(Aerosol) or a Varsol Bath or Acetone bath, the lube it! You will be fine. There won't be any rust. You likely used HOT water did you? Either way, #### loss is averted! :D

Yes. Polytech is a private marketing company which was created and run by the PLA General Staff & families. I do not know if they are still involved (probably not?) but obviously the corporate entity still exists. Not suprisingly, it also sells holistic medical products similar to those sold on Bell's website

All arms plants of the PRC are jointly operated by the PLA & Central Committee of the CCP, the plants themselves being owned by the state.

Sounds to me like the is a great option for someone looking to an M14 without spending Springfield money :p
I think I will pick one up soon.

Any plans on a clinic in the Vancouver, GVRD area??

Tim

Hungry here: Why does one need to strip the bolt? I never do, not even for curiosity. Cleaning ? Use aerosol brake cleaner or a varsol bath (margarine container) or a dunk in a paint thinner jar. Let it air dry or compressed air blast, then you are good to go.

You are, perhaps, presuming that the rifle is used only on a range and only for target shooting.
(I know that I am guilty of that.)

Some people - more serious people - might want to inspect the firing pin and the extractor spring and plunger, to make sure that they are in good condition.

Went to see Hungry today with my appendage in a knapsack. He re-attached it no charge.

The man is full of wisdom of things M14 and things not.

After his walk through of the fine details of the Polytech M305 and having owned TRW and HR M14s in the past it is clear that this thing is an awesome rifle and an outstanding value.

Thanks Barney!

Got mine in the mail today. Good lord the thing is drenched in oil!! Stripped it down, a airy place, a can of brake clean, throw away roasting pan and a brush got the gunk off the metal in 15 minutes. Used WD40 to clean the stock and then ammonia and water to get the rest of the oil off. The gun is quite nice, I see what Hungry means by the "ping" My other 2 snap shut with a soild 'clunk" The finishing is better than that of my AWB compliant M305, but not as nice as my early Alan Lever M305.

I bought mine from Elwood Epps, it came with:

1xrifle
sling
5/20 mag
5rd mag
collapsing cleaning rod and patch holder
Combo tool and chamber brush
oil bottle with oil in it

Tomorrow I will shoot it and report.
