Rework a Marlin 795, or succumb to the 10/22?

i wonder if that is why my new papoose is not very accurate.
its a Remy made one.

now i kinda want to get a older one and see.
when did remy take over Marlin???

The takeover happened in 2008 IIRC, but guns made in the old factory were still on shelves for a few years after that. I think it was probably about 2010-2011 that Remington started producing the parts themselves in their Ilion plant and new guns were full on Remington built.

But they use all the same tooling Marlin used, they just cut out a lot of the labour intensive hand fitting I think, which hurt guns like the papoose and the 39, 336... All Their lever guns basically for some time, as you can't just slap those guns together. I remember there was even talk back then that Remington might discontinue the 39 because they couldn't build them properly.

I have a Marlin 60. It's been very reliable with all kinds of ammo except CCI Quiet. Accuracy is impressive. With the right ammo one hole at 25 yards with 4x scope.

Mine is a recent production made by Remington. First time I shot it the irons sights were dead on at 25 yards. Didn't need adjustment. The stock is much slimmer and, no plastic barrel band like the 10/22.

One weakness to the Marlin is the trigger guard. The rear of the plastic guard is easy to break from over tightening the rear screw. No more than snug. The triggers are about 5 lbs.

My only dislike is how light it is, under 5 lbs without scope. My best 22 offhand shooting is from a front heavy 7+ lb gun.

I have tried a friends stock 10/22. Magazines are excellent, accuracy is good. Take down for cleaning is simple, very few parts to dissasemble. Completely dissasembling the Marlin bottom half can be tricky.

The 10/22 has just one screw that holds the barrel/action to the stock. the Marlin has two action screws. Marlin barrels are thicker than standard. For a cheap factory gun the Marlin M795/M60 is a great buy.

Yah, it has the no-mag trigger disconnect. 30 seconds to disable it, and reversible to take it back to factory if you want to resell it.

(not my video)

Thanks for posting the video, I will do that mod when I install the MCarbo trigger and spring kit I just got for mine.
I am thinking of getting a Boyds At one stock for it as well.

I've told a bunch of guys this, before you discard your plastic stock,a cheap fix is a can of NON expanding foam from any building supply store ( expanding foam will distort your stock) take the butt plate off and fill the hollow stock, replace the butt plate and that 'hollow' feeling is gone.

I just finished doing the magazine disconnect mod while installing my new trigger and spring kit....thanks again Grelmar for posting it. Easy Peasy :d
The new trigger install was easy but the spring kit for the trigger mech was a little more challenging. Good installation videos from M*CARBO on their site..
The new trigger feels a lot better , has an over travel screw now and is a few pounds lighter in pull .

New trigger ...The over travel screw still needs to set to the correct position in this pic

Paper clip on hammer spring to restrain it , Trigger mech separated ,and ready for factory springs to be removed .

Im surprised no one has mentioned this yet. It really doesn't matter what BRAND of rifle you get GENERALLY they will all shoot well...

What matters is if you find the AMMO your rifle LIKES and SHOOTS WELL...

I had a buddys 10/22 embarrass my annie with CCI HV at 50 yards... Then I stopped using his ammo, put in my SK standard and put groups on paper he could only dream about.
With one ammo the 300 buck 10/22 shot better then the 2000 buck annie... With the other, the annie utterly outclassed the ruger.
I had to test A LOT of ammo to find what the Annie liked, when I did... it was dreamy.... (still doesn't match 17hmr accuracy but hey lol! )

Buy what ever rifle you like for what ever reasons. Mag cap, bolt hold open, feel, aftermarket part availability ect ect... Just understand that you need to do your ammo testing and you will get a good shooting rifle.

I used mine recently at the CRPS finale here in Petawawa and it shot very well out to 400 meters. The only issues I had was the stock screws came loose and when I snugged them up the rifle quit working .The screws cant be tight at all on mine as it jams the action somehow. A new stock for it someday is the plan. The other issue I had is I had a few failure to feed as well due to the magazine contacting the barricade or front bag and that caused a couple malfunctions . Overall I really like the rifle and the Mcarbo trigger kit I installed is a big improvement and well worth it ...even if it did put me into the Open division ..lol. I used CCI standard velocity (1070 fps) and CCI Tactical ammo (1200 fps ) and they both shoot well in my rifle.
