rifle for moose hunting-what would you use?

Of the following rifles what would be your choice for an upcoming Quebec moose hunt?

M 700 Remington 25/06 with Bushnell 2.5 - 10 X

M 96 Mauser 6.5 x 55 Swede with Nikon 4 -12 X

Parker Hale Mauser .270 with Bushnell 3 - 9 X

M 700 Remington 7 Rem Mag with Leupold 2.5 - 8 X

M 70 Winchester .375 H & H Mag with Leupold 1.75 - 6 X

Roger # 1 .416 Rigby with NECG peep sight

Marlin 1895 Cowboy .45/70 with Williams peep sight

Pedersoli Sharps .45/90 with iron sights (semi buck horn rear and long range vernier, changeable globe insert front)

With the right bullet they all will kill moose quite dead, but I would go with the 7mm Rem Mag or .375 H&H that you have listed.

OP, I would (and do) choose the rifle from my cabinet that matches the hunt. However, for me, it'd be the .45/70, always wanted one. And I dislike levers.

M700 Remington 7 Rem Mag with Leupold 2.5-8X looks to be the best overall combo of rifle, cartridge and scope.

The one that jumps out at me is the Remington 7mm REM..... and not because I'm a Remington guy, but because its a 7mm REM

This year I got my moose with a Remington 740 in .308 with a 3X9 scope

But while hunting for the thing this year I carried a 30-30 Lever with a fixed 3 power scope, A 45-70 Lever not scoped and a 300 Win Mag with a 4x16 Scope. It all depended on the terrain that I was hunting in. Any one of them would have done the job.

I was getting frustrated enough to consider using some sort of howitzer at several points during the season.......

I'd pick the one that shoots best or that has the most powerful moose hunting connection for me. The only one that i might not pick would be the .25-06, just a little on the light side for a primary moose gun to me. I'd happily load up some 115-120 grain partitions or similar and kill a moose if I stumbled across one while deer hunting, if it was legal, but the .25-06 would not be my first choice for a moose hunt particularly for an out of province hunt.

Thanks for the responses guys. It looks like the M 700 7 Rem Mag hand loaded with Barnes TSX 175's might just about be the perfect moose harvesting implement. The Marlin 1895 Cowboy .45/70 hand loaded with Beartooth 525 grain Piledrivers should be an adequate "close range brush buster" while the J. P. Sauer & Son 12 gauge double barrel shotgun will put grouse on the table.

You may want to test those 175gr TSX in your 7mm Rem Mag. I loaded some for a friends Rem 700 and they would not stabilize. I would go with the 160gr version instead. I've shot one my biggest bull with 160gr TSX in a 7mm Rem Mag.

In no particular order:
375 Ruger Alaskan with either 250 ttsx, 270 tsx, 300 tsx (whatever I grab off the shelf that day)
300win mag Howa Lightning SS/Syn , 200 gr accubond
308win Remington 700, 165 gr Deep Curl, 150 gr GMX
I'd plug a moose with any of these and wouldn't care which one is in my hands. They all kill em deader than dead. I spend most of my hunting time hunting multiple species, so I feel the .308 to be the minimum I like to have.(Black bear, moose, wolverine, wolves, woodland caribou) I seem to have the 375 in my hands most of the time, as you cannot have too much power, but you sure can have "not enough"....... Ask me how I know? Running face-to-face into a grizz with a .270 in my hands. I sure felt naked. Thankfully he decided that "pasty white, short & stout Irish" stew wasn't on his menu
