rifle for moose hunting-what would you use?

Buddy was showing me a pic of a moose his dad shot our east with a 22-250 and exclaimed " what a weapon " . It all depends on how well you can shoot and , a magnum won't make a poor shot any better but for me 30-06 or 45-70 would be my top picks.

Although there are two models of rifle I like in your options I am afraid I would not want any of the above and not because they wont kill a moose dead! Just because my preference for calibre and model of firearm differs than whats available there.

You haven't even listed the round that has probably taken down more than anything else: newborn baby Jesus' cartridge of choice, the 30.06.

Rumour has it that if you hold one in your hand, close your eyes and make a wish, every moose within 1km will drop dead.

Nothing wrong with the oh six, but its not on the list of what I assume are the options available to the OP.

:eek:308 Norma Magnum????
Laugh2

I had one of those I bought many, many moons ago during my introductory years shall we call them? It was a Mauser action that had been chambered in 30-06 before someone "magnum'd" it. My god what a kicking mule that rifle was. It got sold pretty fast but the fellow who bought it from me still has it to this day and loves it. He has shot several moose with it.

Basically, one of the 30 cal magnums that predated introduction of the North American 300 Win Mag. Not much difference in power between the two. After my introduction to hunting and my first, a sporterized 303Br. Lee Enfield, a Simpon-Sears 'specia'l, I acquired a Parker Hale in 308NM. After seeing one of the same by Schultz & Larsen, I promised myself, "one day". I did have the following Winchester model 70 in 300WM

Which I gave to a good friend, after I acquired my long promised S&L in 308NM

And a pleasant addition to my collection of three S&L's.

Top down, 7x61 S&H, 308NM and the 358 NM, the big three efforts of co-operation between S&L and Norma.

Johnn Peterson,
Just curious as to what that Moose figure (medallion) is and why it's displayed in so many of your posts with rifle pictures. :)

It's a trivet, :)sits on the coffee table in my den for those hot meals while watching the likes of hockey games. Quite some time back, when I was documenting details of my long guns for insurance purposes, photos were included as part of that documentation and the trivet got accidently included in some of the first. Thought what the hell, and included it from that time on. Along similar lines, I've since included one of the coasters in handgun photos.

The trivet and the coasters are part of a wide variety of memorabilia in my den, of my favorite big game animal, Mr. Moose.

Of the following rifles what would be your choice for an upcoming Quebec moose hunt?

M 700 Remington 25/06 with Bushnell 2.5 - 10 X

M 96 Mauser 6.5 x 55 Swede with Nikon 4 -12 X

Parker Hale Mauser .270 with Bushnell 3 - 9 X

M 700 Remington 7 Rem Mag with Leupold 2.5 - 8 X

M 70 Winchester .375 H & H Mag with Leupold 1.75 - 6 X

Roger # 1 .416 Rigby with NECG peep sight

Marlin 1895 Cowboy .45/70 with Williams peep sight

Pedersoli Sharps .45/90 with iron sights (semi buck horn rear and long range vernier, changeable globe insert front)

Well, the cops in Calgary proved today that the 700 in .308 works fine. From about 50 yards!!

Agree, but for me 30-30 is
THE HUNTING ROUND......wait for it...................:ang3
This year I got my moose with a Remington 740 in .308 with a 3X9 scope

But while hunting for the thing this year I carried a 30-30 Lever with a fixed 3 power scope, A 45-70 Lever not scoped and a 300 Win Mag with a 4x16 Scope. It all depended on the terrain that I was hunting in. Any one of them would have done the job.

I was getting frustrated enough to consider using some sort of howitzer at several points during the season.......

a moose rifle for me, out of my collection, I would likely grab one of my many 308's as first choice. Out of those it would be my Browning Micro Medallion or BLR. Second choice would likely be my Ruger No.1 A 30-06. Third would be my Ruger No.1 B 300 wby mag. But sadly, I'll never be going moose hunting now anymore at my age an aging condition. Moose hunting around here has been very limited lately. It's closed in many areas. Not sure who and where anyone can go now. Too bad! The last time I had fresh moose meat was at least 10 years ago and I remember just how much I loved those steaks! I did get a few pc's recently from a buddy that was cleaning out his deep freeze, it's about 4 year old stuff, hope it's still good. Just waiting for a new slow cooker and a pressure cooker to arrive in the mail. Got a few steaks and a roast.

I hauled 495Lbs of Moose Meat to the butcher shop after it had hung for a week. It went all of 10 feet after one shot from my Parker Hale .270 150 grain at 250-300 yards. :) I had to go buy another freezer cause I didn't have enough room! Plain and simply my FAV big game rifle. Love the old British Steel, So Purdy!!!
