Ruger #1, .303 British.

The Ruger No 1 is certainly a ###y rifle I will give you that. Im haveing a little trouble getting my mind around the 303 part. Like why bother? Just get a ###y jungle carbine and find something truly interesting for the No 1. But then if you have as many guns as Gatehouse is rumored to have, well then maybe I can see it. Not going to be one on every block thats fer sure. Still its a gun so its cool. Nobody is going to call it an ugly rifle. Now a Martini action in 303 would be sweet. Nice model 12 BSA. Very nice shape. Yum.

Don't you guys know that Gatehouse is the King or dubbing cartridges King? It's his responsibility..or something. ;)

First of all, Gatehouse...I'm a devoted "subject" of the the Ruger .375 King throne. I only owned one for a short while, but that's just because I had to sell it to pay the bills at the time. I will own one again. I preferred my Alaskan to the Winchester model 70 I had in .375 H&H, although that was a fine rifle.

I digress...I think the .303 British chambered Ruger number 1 is a fantastic idea. I killed my first deer with a .303 chambered rifle (so I sure have a soft spot for it...), and the Ruger no 1 is simply a wonderful creation. What is not to like about it??? :)

I like the No 1 have owned many calibers and still have a couple but the 303 I don't get it either I see No 1's listed in 300 H+H that will be were my money is spent. I have a nice jungle carbine that will shoot under a 1'' that's all the 303 I need.

MooseMasher I agree I am starting to hunt once again with opened sights and vintage rifles, this feels more confortable than bringing my 300WM on every outing and downing moose at 80 to 120 yards!! Many will buy one of these 303 Brits as our fathers gun was more than likely a 303 or first rifle we could afford to buy was a 303, so for alot of us wanting to relive our younger days are willing to spend the money to acquire a quality hunting rifle to put some meat in the freezer! And there can never be to many differrent models of rifles to buys as just like people we all have varing tastes, take care and enjoy these new .31 calibre guns, Dale in T-Bay

Hope the real negative stuff wasn't directed at me but if it was no worries. I've probablyly owned 15-20 no.1s in the last 25 years. Everything from 22-250s to Rigby's and even the dreaded 460. They are very cool guns, I know all the reasons rimmed stuff works supposedly better. I like old stuff too. My current 375 is a Browning FN, wood and blued gun. Clarke knows where I'm coming from, it was a little friendly ribbing. The rest of you guys have a nice day.

Personally I think the Ruger No. 1 is a great rifle and I agree about the merits of the rimmed case in this action. I think it's 'intriguing', but will not likely buy one.

The Canadian heritage is the icing on the cake for sure, but I think maybe the fact that the # 1 is modelled after the British Farquharson style of rifle is lost on many.

Man, the more I think about it, the more I'm convincing myself to get one.
The only problem is that I have a "need" for one in 400 Jeffery and/or 450 NE as well.

It never ends.

True enough and nothing shabby about the #1. I've had five, from 22-250 to 375 H&H and will likely get another. I still have a scanned copy of an article I found, "The Ruger No. 1, Shooting and tuning". Some of the modifications mentioned in it I had done to my 22-250 and it had a significant positive effect on accuracy. Again, already having a couple of Jungle Carbines in 303 Br. to shoot, for a single shot I'll go for a Martini and 'tiddle' it up.

I got some pics today of my "almost finished " Stalking rifle in 303 Brit!:D:dancingbanana:

Took my first deer with a borrowed Ruger #1, with the owner sitting right behind me, tell me which one of the deers to take. Yes. What a rifle!! Would be nice to have it in the venerable 303 for sure!

Believe me, if I was able to I would!!
I am totally messed up in the computer department!!

Have you already sized the originals down to that tiny size or or you still have some bigger versions? If the latter, send 'em down to me on a PM and I;'ll size them to about 5 x 7 or so.

Nice rifle indeed Cat. Love the style and wood.

The 303 Brit is a cartridge that defined the battle experiences of two generations of men in my family. It is intersting noone has ever questioned the ownership of a 7X57 Mauser or a 30-06 in a Ruger No 1 on any forum I've attended. Yet Canadians scoff at other Canadians for choosing the 303 over any other caliber. So typically Canadian. If it isn't in an American gun magazine or dare I say ad dressed up like an article it doesn't measure up. How sad that a generation of Canadian men would even question ownership of cartridge so central to our firearm history.

Enjoy your new Yankee cartridges until they are discontinued in favor of the next generation of Super Duper Smith&Remington Hornady Whiz Bang Magnum that will last about 10 years.
