Ruger Alaskan open sites?? or other suggestions

$1000 or less...:) If I can find a savage hunter in 375 that would be nice..

Epps has new Zastava mausers in .375h&h with sights for $718. If you want a backup grizzly rifle, id take that over a savage.

If its just black bear and moose, I'd get a M98 in .30-06 with sights from tradex.

I have one of the NECG Ruger peep sights and have used it on a couple of rifles, haven't used it to take game though.

I have a love/hate relationship with the thing.

The love part is that it clamps onto the integral scope base in a quick detach fashion without any modification to the reciever.

The hate part is that the target picture leaves a lot to be desired when compared to other peep sights I use. There is just too much bulk around the aperature.

If it was the only peep sight I use, I could probably get used to it.
Compared to XS, William's and Skinner sights that I have, where the aperature stands proud above the rest of the sight, it just does not compare for target picture.
It works, but it's just not as good as the others, for me anyway.

If you want a back-up sight or want to be able to switch back and forth between peep sight and scope, then it's about the only decent option that I'm aware of.

I've come to the conclusion that for my purposes I'm better off drilling and tapping the reciever for an XS sight and leaving it alone, as a dedicated peep sighted rifle.
If I want back up sights in case of scope failure on a dedicated scoped rifle, I'll use the factory irons.

I too prefer an aperture style sight, but while the NECG CZ peep sight is a real beauty that can easily be opened up to a ghost ring, not so the Ruger version, which has so much metal around the aperture that it pulls your focus away from the front sight. With XS no longer shipping to Canada, that leaves the Williams FP matched with as rectangular post front sight, for a superior index of elevation compared to a bead, the next best choice IMHO.

I'd be inclined to use the factory sight, which is actually pretty good. The issue I have with the factory sights is that the white bead front sight, is a bit fragile in a rocky environment and is a color that has poor contrast against a polar bear. Against a dark background though, this sight is easy to see.

Xs doesn't ship directly to Canada, but I think you can still get them through Brownell's.
At least I hope you can.
The last I got from Brownell's were a couple of the post front sights, about 3-4 months ago.

Looks like a I will be getting a Ruger African or Alaskan..thinking African..hope there stock cracking issues are resolved..

I decided to carry my african without glass on it this year and have been working up a load so far it likes 260 gr accubonds over RL 15 and feel confidant anything out to 200 m would be dead(to bad you cant adjust the sights on the african or alasken for elevation). As for the cracking issue I got mine with a HS precision stock on it i've never had any issues to date:)

Directly from NECG

NECG will ship to Canada, BUT, there is a minimum $40 shipping charge. Went through the checkout process, said $7 USPS to Canada, so that's what I sent them... got a note back on my invoice that shipping to Canada is $40. Just a ripoff IMO.

I've had some other issues with them, so I'm hoping I'll never have to deal with them again.

where did you get the stock?

Stay tuned I'm just waiting to hear back from the gentleman I got the rifle off of.

Well that would be me. :)

I bought the stock off another CGN'r to replace the factory wood one. That fellow says it came from the US, but can't recall details. I'm also not sure if the camo pattern is HS factory, my guess would be it's not.

In regard to the factory walnut on the African,I sold it on the EE and the buyer noticed it was cracked in the bridge between the trigger and mag inlet, something I wasn't aware of. I refunded the money and then resold the stock for peanuts with disclosure. It was really only noticeable when you applied side pressure and I don't think it would have caused any issue. I suppose I could have gone to Ruger and tried warranty, but it really wasn't worth the hassle to me.

I kinda miss that gun, though not as much as the RSM in 375H&H I sold after that one, another victim of my gun ADD. :(
