Ruger No 1....375 H&H or .45-70..

Seems the op has made his mind up, but i must say that the 45/70 out does the .375 with the heavy bullets, how fast can the .375 launch .458"-550gr. bullets??

Have been looking on Prophet River's site for the last little while...hence the reason for this thread...after reviewing the comments on this thread as well as searching the rest of the site for the past few days/hours, regarding the ruger no 1 and .375 H&H / .45-70 cartridges...I just offically made up my mind... .375H&H it is!!

I think the large 7 will give ya a pat on your back! Something like: "the one size fits all" cartridge......... :)

Congratulations, may I humbly suggest these two articles on the .375 H&H? I imagine they'll make you feel very good about your purchase. I really like No.1's, Stainless, and .375's... so all sorts of good there.

Looks like you already made your decision, and it seems a good one to me.

Personally, I would not look at a 45-70 in the Ruger #1 anyway.

While I like both the 45-70 cartridge and the Ruger #1, I think Ruger #1's chambered in .458 win mag, and .458 Lott particularly, make the 45-70 chambering completely redundant.

It can launch 350grs at 2,450fps (standard book load with RL15), which with twice the energy, and a flat trajectory, the .375 will do more than a 550gr at 1,100-1,500fps any day I'm afraid Ben. You're getting significantly more than .45-70 punch with a .30-06 trajectory when you go to a .375, hard not to appreciate. And it's even a classic Ben, figured you'd like her!

Agreed, especially for handloaders.

I have a 375 H+H in a rem. 700 that is pleasure to shoot recoil is moderate,I also have a 45/70 Guide Gun, with stout loads it has alot more recoil.
A good buddy had a Ruger # 3 in 45/70.With a stout loaded 400gr bullet the recoil was more than I can handle.
I would go with the 375 hands down.

I shoot a Rugger #1 tropical in 375 H&H with a 300 grain soft point boat tail, same ballistics as a 3006, hits like a charmer, not too unmanageable recoil. I love it , my favorite modern firearm. Practice and I can shoot three rounds at a running deer target that runs full out for approximately 40 yards.

No the .375 uses .375" bullets.......I guess I'll have to trot out the Taylor K.O. values again, which shows the heavily loaded 45/70 well above the .375 and about equal to the .416 Rigby. Anyhow tomorrow we'll try the 550gr. flattenerrr at 1750fps. and see what gives first from the Marlin and Hi-wall, there could be casualties.

Hope you're posting results ! :D

Thank you guys!!!! I couldn't be happier with the purchase...Have been pondering getting one for a while....And You guys just gave me the little push I needed...Thanks for those articles Ardent...

Either cartrige will do the job--but if I was getting a #1 for moose and didn't want to get beat up by recoil I would have chosen the .35 whelen option.

#1 Ruger in .375 is more recoil than I care for (bench shooting) because of combination of gun fit and weight. I had far less issue with #1's in 416 rem mag and 45-70.

The 45-70 can dish out some good medicine, but for factory ammo, I think the .375H&H has the upper hand...

Well, I'll shoot it and see what the recoil is like for myself...If anything..I'll just hit the gym and get to building up them shoulder muscles ;)...Once I get it sighted in, I'll just pratice a little more from shooting as i would in the field..Like I said in my first post..."most" of my moose hunting is in thick woods..so probably 95% of my shots would be taken while standing..

I've got a commercial mauser 98 in 375 H&H. Before this the heaviest recoiling gun I had fired was a .300 wby and I was all worried about how it would beat me one it showed up. It was light, and the cartridges with almost comically big, i was sure that it would knock my teeth out and break all of my bones.

My dad and I went out to the range looking at it handing it back and forth saying "you first." Finally we decided that since I was young and foolish it should be my job. Standing was the shooting position of choice. So I loaded a round, chambered it, snuggled up to the cannon and squeezed the trigger and boom.

Nothing crazy happened. It kicked quite a bit, and it made some noise, but I kept my teeth, retinas stayed attached, collar bone was intact. Everyone that has fired it has all said the same thing. It kicks, but its not unmanageable, its not even unpleasant. I've shot it off the bench, its not awful either. An old cooey single shot with a 3in magnum lead shell feels like it kicks more.

I'm sure if you wear a light t-shirt and have a range session of 40+ rounds you might be a bit tender, but proper shooting form will prevent any injuries. Lots of people will say "oh you won't shoot many shots with it at the range, its not a plinking gun." That's true, but its so much fun to shoot. It'll rattle the gongs like you haven't seen before, water jugs go kaboom in entertaining ways, tomato juice cans are my fave.

Basically, respect it but dont be afraid of it.

Nice gun Gamestalker30-06!
I shoot with irons with my No.1 45/70. Found my cheek bones were getting pretty beat up from the recoil. I slid a piece of thin foam under a shell holder and it made all the difference. Highly recommended.
