I have long thought that the 4.2" RH .45 would be fantastically versatile if cut for moonclips! The nice thing is that the MSRP is the same for the uncut one.
From what I have read the RH can easily digest the 'Ruger Only' loads for .45LC. It was either Brian Pierce (as you mention) and/or John Taffin who wrote that for a .45LC to run neck and neck with .44 mag ballistics it needs to be loaded to approximately 80% of the .44's pressure and the RH can handle that without issue. Where legal you could run .45ACP in IPSC/IDPA one day and hunt big game with stout .45LC loads the next. The pennies are being saved...my SRH needs a mate!
The Redhawk action is far stronger than any Blackhawk. Cylinder diameter for the redhawk is 1.782 verses 1.731 for the Blackhawk. Chamber wall thickness for 45 colt is 0.103 verses 0.076.
Published reports I have read cite the redhawk being 30% stronger than a large frame Blackhawk (going from memory here, it could be even stronger) Brian Pierce in Handloader Magazine has written extensively about the strenght of the Redhawk, and has published many very hot 45 colt loads for them with the warning that they are NOT for Blackhawks
