More weight+bonded=better penetration=more available shot angles where you can still reliably hit the vitals. Not every animal is shot from a perfect broadside angle.

Are we really landed at "they didn't chrono it" to prove some kind of point though? I suppose those publications always chrono every other gun they review, and just omitted this one, or no?
Its too bad though. Especially with 165s and 168s. Woulda been nice to see I am sure. Bet it beats 22" barreled 303 Brits with any load lol.
I bet with a carefully chosen 150gr it was pretty close to the same speed of a cherry picked, absolutely best in class 123gr 7.62x39. Only with almost 40% more energy and a lead that just keeps on growing lol

Still looking for a 180 grain load that beats the Parker Hale 22" 303 British. That Federal Gold Medal 168 is a real winner too in the short barrel.

Do you have any evidence that the velocity quoted on 303brit ammo is based on a 22" barrel and not say, the 25+" barrel on most Enfields?
From my notes, with a 22" barrel:
R-P 180 grain 2460 fps
PPU 150 grain BTSP 2660 fps
R1M 3Z 174? grain 2400 fps (this is VERY good ammo)
FC 180 grain 2405 fps (this stuff is inconsistent)
I've got some others that I have not run over the chrono; Igman, FNB, HXP, IVI.
The South African stuff may be the most consistent centerfire ammo I've ever seen. Too bad it is gone and the brass is Berdan.
Here's some 220gr Norma soft point boat tails over CFE223 from a 18.7" 308. That's nippin' on the heels of a 20" SKS with 123gr ammo

Federal PowerShok 150gr 308 has a box sticker of
2134 ft pounds and 2532 FPS at 100 yards
I would guess these numbers were tested with a longer barrel.
What would be a guess on numbers from a 16.5”
And more importantly at 100 -200yards is the reduced velocity/energy going to even make a difference on a deer.

If it kills em fine at 200 and 300 yards I really don't see how its not gonna kill em from a short barrel at 100 yards.
Its still doing much better than lots of classic deer killers like the 30-30 etc.
Lets say it had a muzzle velocity of 2532 fps instead. What would that look like at 100 yards? Arbitrarily choosing .350 as the BC.
2287 fps and 1743 ft/lbs.
Thats killin just about anything.

In my opinion, no… said as a proponent of velocity kills. If your world hunting wise is 0-200 yards on deer, you’re not going to see a meaningful difference between a 16.5” and a 22” etc 308. It’s only when you’re looking past 200, and at bigger things like moose, elk, mountain game you have to think about it more.
I’m in a simplifying phase, it’s a road littered with setbacks, but I’m stumbling towards having a few good rifles in common chamberings that can do everything I need to with a rifle. Generally, that means compromise on many factors including barrel length. I’ve found I like 19-20” for my purposes in .308s.
