Run-In with "Captain Hunting Rifle."

There used to be a lot of people like that here, but the endless banning of everything has made their numbers dwindle.

Pistol shooters always used to get #### from the TR crowd down at Bisley because they decried us as "cowboys", then handguns were banned and the NRA nearly went bust as a result, because of the lack of range use. Suddenly they're not whining anymore about pistol shooting now that range fees and NRA membership fees have skyrocketed. "Bring it back, bring it back!"

The same with military-style rifles, shooters always used to get #### for having those, but now that semi-auto centrefires are banned, it's dawned on the "oh they're so bad" crowd that the only difference from their guns is the physical appearance.

The field shooters used to steer well clear of target shooters like me, but now we're all using bolt-action rifles and the like, just with Aimpoints and larger magazines and the like on them, and it's getting a bit too close for comfort for them. Semi-automatic shotgun for IPSC compared to a semi-automatic shotgun for clay pigeons... and the difference is...?

The fact of the matter is that people who look down their noses at pistol shooters and people using modern semi-automatic rifles are simply out of touch. Hunting is decling as a sport, the growth in shooting is in target shooting with pistols as people move from rural to urban areas.

We're the mainstream now - you've got nothing to be ashamed of.

Stevo, good post man, I too have fun into many "hunter rifle types" they sit there sighting in their rifle once a year and complain about me shooting my AR giving me glares and such. One guy litterally shot 5 rounds in 2 hours playing around with his hunting rifle and scope. I got annoyed when I declared a seize fire every 20 minutes or so to replace my targets after hundreds of 223's were sent down range! I can relate to your story.

I have, Stevo. With this idiot manager at a hunting store here. He claims that the 7mm STW is a "sniping cartridge" and isn't sure if it's legal. I called in to ask one time if I could order in a Remington 700P, and he isn't sure if he can order in a "sniper" rifle legally. I almost burst out laughing, but I calmly asked him why, becuase there isn't any difference between that and a varmint rifle besides the stock and finish, so he mumbles something and ends up getting me a quote a while later.
Or those skeet/trap/hunter shooters at the range who think an SKS or any such rifle is a "killing 'weapon'" and must be illegal. I walked around the parking lot with my SKS slung over my shoulder while observing a trap competition, and boy did I get some looks; I'd do it again anyday.

It's also funny to see new 20 something year old hunters at the shooting range with the newest, hottest, most expensive .300 ultra-super-short-overkill-magnum rifle. I've personally seen this happen a number of times: they've never shot the thing before, and they get a cheap scope with little eye relief, and they either
a) can't sight in their rifle because the scope is a piece, or
b) smoke themself in the eye with the first shot and flinch like an abused dog for every shot thereafter.

Rohann,
Where do you usually shoot? I shoot at the NSR&G and there seems to be a real mixed bag of firearm shooters and so far I haven't observed any negative atitudes one way or the other. IE: a while back I was up shooting my 9 mil & .357 with my 11 yr old and an older fellow was beside us with an "olympic" style single, a guy showed up with an interesting "black" rifle and the 3 of us thought it was pretty cool.

We didn't hover around him because he looked like he was rather absorbed in some issue with it but my son thought I should get one. I told him as soon as he saved enough from his paper route he could get me one. :)

I shoot at the NF&G club. I do like the range and there are some good guys there, but there's the few who "don't agree with" certain types of rifles.

ummm. I remember hunting lil' critters with my old man and several ARs as a kid...(good old day, normal sized mags, a real boy and his dog kinda story) The AR is a sweet golpher, squirrel etc.rifle. Funny how quick some forget huh?

Viva the AR-15!

At my club

I like to put my Colt M-4 on the same bench as my Remington 45-70 rolling block....the old guys "double take" is worth the fun.

Rohann,

I guess I haven't been "fortunate" enough to run into that clique yet. Hopefully they're not too anal as shooting there sure beats driving all the way out to the "Hat".

First year back hunting I was unsure of making a 25 yard shot.

By several coincedences in the off season, I got into service rifle, national matched an M14, attended all the matches in the off season and practiced several times a month. Also started taking my hunting rifle to "sharpshooter" matches which ran along with the service rifle. Went from shooting 5 rounds off a bench a year to over 200 rounds fired from all four positions.

Next hunting season I took a deer at 175 years, free standing & slung up, and was extemely happy as I knew exactly where I would hit. There is no replacement for trigger time, especially a service rifle match that stresses your skill as a shooter. One quickly learns it's not so much about the latest, greatest 300 Win Weatherby +P magnum you buy but your ability to simply shoot, and alot of guys don't get that. A rifle is a rifle.

Any hunter I see who bad mouths black rifles I take to task and give my example. I invite them to the next posted match. Not surprisingly, not many take me up on it. Then you know they are fooling themselves on how good they are and what they "think".

BTW, went to a yearly hunting rifle shoot our club puts on and I placed 6th out of 15 with an open sight Israeli Mauser .308 and surplus ammo. The guys with their 300 Win Mags and the latest Leupold scope weren't laughing as they were before the match. Best compliment I got was a nod from an oldtimer shooting a stock 30-30, who I know appreciates all rifles.

One thing about NF&G, I didn't mean to generalize so much, there are a lot of really good, helpful guys there, but I have gotten some looks a few times and some complaining from temporary R.O.'s about shooting with more than one round in the SKS's magazine, and it gets on my nerves. I personally enjoy trap as it's a lot of fun, and didn't mean to make a blatant generalization about all trap shooters, but some are VERY narrow-minded.

It was actually kind of funny, one weekend two friends and I went to the F&G club to shoot a few rifles including a 8mm Mauser. There was a large trap competition going on, and they switched from manually controlled disk launchers to voice activated launchers. They had to ask us to hold off for a while, because every time we shot, the skeet launcher would activate automatically, and there were disks flying everywhere.

I remember going to Mission Rod and Gun club... 1 round limit on centrefire rifles... wtf. I went and joined Poco instead. Plenty of pistols, black rifles, Beretta carbines... and still hunting stuff and single-action shooters. One big happy gun-toting family.

If they come for my black rifles and handguns, I will devote all of my energy to seeing that the hunters and benchrest guys lose theirs too.

Amen to that, I'll become a full fledged member of the CGC with Wendy. I won't rest either till all they have are pointed sticks. The first thing I'll go after is "evil sniper scopes". If you're a good hunter, you dont need a scope. Next I'll go after Calibre.... then all the hunting accidents. If it only saves one life.

All or Nothing.

I've said this since 1978, and in April 2005 they came for mine.

Hence, my bad attitude.
