Russian SKS45 long thread.

hand select is a term that are used for going thru what they have on hand and picking the best of the bunch for you. its not for grading.

so if a dealer has an unissued then thats what you would get, should they run out then you would get to the next best which is non-refurb matching in excellent cond.

I hope that isn't the case, because if the leftovers are shyte and I get the 'best' of the shyte batch, it wouldn't be worth paying the money for. I'm sure Marlin would let me know if this is the case.

Oh, I don't know, over a whole year?... I've looked at it a few thousand times.:ar15:

2000/365 = 5 times per day, every single day. Even Christmas!

thanks for the update . so it will be at the end of the month.

al simmon have already received 60 of the BELL SKS.

al simmon have already received 60 of the BELL SKS.

Not as many now, or so they say I was talking to a lady from there this morning, I had faxed my order and emailed it as well to make sure.

They still have some laminated ones and plain stock, Just not exactly sure on the numbers though.

IZH vs. BELL

We've now had a chance to view some of the Bell imports sold through Al Simmons and the IZH imports sold through Ellwood Epps.

So far, Bells carbines have the black paint finish, black bolt carriers, and some EP'd parts (trigger group). Some rifles have laminate stocks. The magazine restriction uses a wide metal rod welded to the inside base of the magazine cover. This causes the black finish on the magazine cover to be burned off, and obscures the original serial number.

IZH carbines have a deep blued finish, bright bolt carriers, and stamped matching parts. Some may have had EP's numbers. So far, all stocks have been birch wood. The magazine restriction uses a narrow metal rod welded to the bottom of the follower lever. This method seems to be the least intrusive and causes no harm to the carbine's finish.

In my opinion, this puts the current IZH imports at the top of the list for being collectible. I wouldn't mind obtaining one of the black "paint" finished ones, especially if it was an early 1949 dated model. I just don't like the way the finish has been damaged in the blocking process. In my eyes, this makes them less collectible, though perfectly good shooters

Smartbomb, these unissued carbines would all have been test fired at the factory to confirm accuracy and function. If it had been in prolonged use, you would notice:

-Exterior wear and tear to the bluing and wood
-loss of blue in the receiver, by the side rails and recoil lug
-wear to the bolt, rounding of the extractor edges, primer circle around the firing pin hole (corrosive ammo), wear to the bottom of the bolt from the disconnect (small dimple mid bolt) and rear bottom edge from contacting the recoil lug, wear to the firing pin "tail"
-wear to the piston head and grooves (rounding out from cleaning, pitting to the piston face)
-loss of blue from the inside of the gas tube, wear to the contact between the gas tube and gas tube socket from dis assembly
-loss of blue from the face of the hammer
-among other things.

Even an unissued carbine may have some loss of blue from handling, removal of the bolt and reassembly, etc. over their 50+ years of existence.

All carbines that have gone through refurbishment would have been returned to serviceable condition, with all worn parts replaced with new ones.

Range report:

I had the opportunity yesterday to bring my carbines to the range. 3 were in unissued condition, 1 refurbished. All performed flawlessly in function, including loading, feeding, firing, extraction and ejection. Using the 10 round stripper clips, 5 rounds can be quickly loaded, with the remaining five rounds still retained by the clip.

They were fired at 100m, with the smallest group being 3", the largest 6" (within the 15cm required when issued). The only sight adjustment made was for elevation. 2 out of 4 carbines grouped within the acceptable 5cm deviation from center. The other 2 will require adjustment of windage to bring them within acceptable standards. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my windage sight tool, so that will be another day.

Remember when you start adjusting the front sight:
1. Elevation: one complete turn of the front sight up or down changes the MPI 16cm at 100m.

2. Windage: 1mm of movement right or left changes the MPI 21cm at 100m.

Have fun plinking!

I saw them unpacking the crates at Al Simmons on Friday. they logged them in Saturday, and i hand selected one and paid for it. They all look pretty good, but i'm picky, so had wanted to choose mine by hand. Since they are closed today, i imagine they should still have a good selection. I will be back there tomorrow to pick her up. GREAT people to deal with! :)

aside the major difference of the wood , could you describe how you hand picked ? what you look for ? it would be helpful to others who happen to buy in person. BTW: to those who dont know these are BELL shipment, hand picking a IZH shipment would be different.

i recall when i was buying chinese SKS several years ago , two guys ahead of me picked the best looking wood on a pin barrel norinco , luckily leaving a all matching early chinese for me (yup, wood was ugly).

Frontiers website says they would be shipping last weekend? Has anyone has their credit card billed, transfer done, or received one yet.

It also stated those were for the people they had confirmed orders for.

I tried to call but the line was busy all day...

A few pages back Frontier said they changed the shipping date to this Wednesday. They really should update their website imho.

jan 9th.
Most of the rifles are arriving next week (already transfered to us). The balance (100 guns) arrive between Jan 20 and the 26th. Dont worry I recruited enough people to ge the rifles shipped out in as little as 3 days or less.

worth reposting . i would like to work there temporary. lol.
