Russian SKS45 long thread.

It is more than the $200 I paid to HH in Yorkton, but if they are as nice as he says, it is worth it. I am paying the $285 to him as well. The only thing we did not confirm is shipping. Did he say what the charge will be?

Ed quoted me $20 to ship to Ontario.. so I'm lookin at $320 taxed and shipped...

Already told you: GARNET SHELLAC.
You have to strip it first of the old coat, 0000 steel wool and denaturated alcohol, NO sanding paper.
I would suggest you use NO sanding paper on the stock after stripping down the shellac, just 0000 steel wool.
Then, you have to prepare the shellac: a 2 lb cut would be good, that means 2 lb shellac for 1 gallon alcohol.
You don't need that much, do the math for 3.5 oz shellac, more than enough.
Dissolve the flakes or buttons in 1/2 of the 3.5 oz alcohol, and leave it overnight in the jar but tighten the lid. Next day, add the other 1/2 and stirr well, and let it rest for a few hours. It is a good idea to strain the solution as it may have insect parts and other impurities.
Then, the hard part, as shellac dries very fast.
Very good instructions here: http://www .shellac.net/faq.html
Good luck!

I need to find a way to re-finish my stock and make her almost like new again!! Any suggestions?

My first one is laminated. I plan on striping it with Circa 1850 giving it a nice smooth sanding (the wood is extremely rough), coating it with Bircwood Casey's stock sealer and finishing it off with linspeed oil.

This should make a sweet finish.

Mine is not done in shellac and is a light clear finish. Another option to the linspeed oil (or double boiled linseed oil) is a minwax satin clear.

If you are wanting it to look like the original finish follow the above thread and use shellac.

To strip the old finish though, I personally will not use anything but Circa 1850 and 0000 steel wool. It melts the old finish off and pulls the stain out of the stock.

Good luck, there are many ways to finish a stock, it is your preference to get the desired outcome.
Smartbomb posted some Utube videos on one persons prefernce earlier on in this gigantic thread.

No problems here, I've done so many that, even though I don't make a living from it, I am almost an expert.
Shooting: sure, Bridgeport is my club.

KWhunter: I also live in Kitchener, we need to get together and shoot sometime. Maybe I can persuade you to oversee my stock re-finishing project?

huh? 214 for all of them, or some pre full shipment deal?

SIR had them originally listed at $169. Since they had issues getting their shipment, they ordered from another supplier that was a little more expensive than originally posted. So they upped the price to $214. People have been waiting for over a year to get their purchase and are still waiting. I doubt that they will have any extras available unless some people have canceled their orders.

Just got my second which is a IZH 52 non refurb in 3 days after purchase from Sask. Oh well I guess I win the sir/frontier bet I made last year on who would be sending out the gear first

Yorkton Home Hardware. Beautiful SKS. Good bunch to deal with. $250,all in, handpicked and delivered. I'm pretty sure they have sold all the non refubs though. Ask for Rod

Just some random thoughts and observations here on the two different shipments. IZH has the nicest ones hands down with the un-issueds,but also some refurbs, that to me looked to be assembled from spare parts. Bell has the messy mag pinning, and some with EP'd triggers. But Bell seems to have more earlier, and rarer variations, along with more matched laminates. All the Izzy ones as far as I know have came from IZH. IZH also seems to have more mis-matched stocks and handguards. Now I've not seen any of the IZH black bolts yet. But I've heard they are forced EPd. Thing is there are interesting ones from both companies.
