Hey Gang...

I got my S&W M&P 15-22 from Frontier Firearms 2 weeks ago, and have been out with it twice. Overall impressions are very good. Quality is excellent and fit and finish is neat and clean, especially considering that most of the gun is made of polymer.

It is lightweight and easy handling. I like the fact that all the functions are the same as 223 AR rifles...it's a great training aid for the full size, right down to the same stock and stock iron sights.

The accuracy is better than expected for a 22 semi, with 50 yard, rapid fire groups averaging at about 3-4" for me. I plan to put a on optic on this rifle to get a bit closer to my targets.

Reliability is great. Between my two outings, I ran a mixed bag of ammo brands and manufacturers (all budget stuff...no match grade or premium) of approximately 1000 rounds WITHOUT cleaning. I experienced 4 fail to feeds. I believe that all were ammo related, however. To clear the fail to feed, as with the 223 rifles, I locked the bolt to rear, removed the mag, worked the action, replaced the mag, and racked action again. Easy.

As for cleaning, the rifle disassembles the same as 223 rifles. The bore was easily cleaned with one swipe of a .22 cal bore snake. The breach face is a bit tricky to clean as there is a metal rod protrucing from it. I got in there with a q-tip. The bolt easily disassembles for cleaing, and was easy to do.

I already have some LaRue Tactical accessories on the way for the rifle. I fine the quad picatinny rails on the forend to be a bit rough, so I have some rail covers. I also have a replacement pistol grip on the way, because I am not a fan of the original style one on the gun.

Overall, this is a great rifle for the price, and I plan to sell all my other 22 rifles. This one is the do-all 22 rifle for me. Go out and handle on at the store, and you'll want one.

Something has to be be wrong here. It should be much better than that at 50 yards. I can go all day long and get 1 to 2" max with my SR-22(And a red dot) and I would expect the same type of results from the MP-15. Type a couple different types of ammo.

I'm sure that it does shoot better that that, but as I stated, "rapid fire" as in I was standing, shooting at a target in rapid succession (ie. 25 rds in less than 15 seconds) while using the factory battle sight. I expect that the group will be a lot smaller when I am shooting off a bench with some optics. I'll advise when I shoot it again.

Thanks

I just arrived home from the range, here is my review.

This is an awesome rifle. Did anyone have problems with the mags though. I kept getting rounds stuck in it; also one went in backwards. i also found it tricky and slow to load, I'll give 2 thumbs up on the rifle and a thumb down on the mag.

Good things comes to those who wait.

I lost my extractor with Federal bulk pack.

how did you lose an extractor?

anyways, here's my report after the range today. (i arrived late, it closes at 5:00, and i got there around 4:35pm)

Magazine/Ammo - i ran american eagles (cheap ammo imo) and i had 1 FTE and 1 FTF. the magazine was kinda iffy, as it wasn't as "fluid" as i had thought it to be. keep in mind, that i only received the rifle on monday and its the first box of ammo. i ended up using 3 boxes of ammo before closing time. the FTF was pretty bad, as one of the casings got lodged backwards. i'm not sure if WD-40 on the magazine will help. i did a slow fire (fire, pause, fire, pause...) scenario with no problems. i did a second round of speed fire (fire, fire, fire, fire...) and that's when the FTF occured. towards the end of it, i did another speed fire excercise with no FTF or FTEs.

Accuracy - amazingly accurate. i did 5 different groupings on the target and they were all within the size of a roll of scotch tape. keep in mind, i was kinda rushed before closing time. my scope wasn't aligned, but the problem is fixed now.

i still have a brick of .22 blazers, which i haven't tried yet. i'll give this a go in the coming weeks. 7 boxes of american eagles still remain.

My rifle had a rapid fire at 100 rounds. 13 FTF's and at around 250 rounds it blew the extractor claw - this is what I was told it was called - and mad a bit of a mess of this round. This rifle will be great when the problems are fixed. I still have hope for it yet.

Please be safe when test firing your new Smith and Wesson MP 15 .22lr
