S&W M&P 15-22 report

Not sure what the turnaround for us in Canada is, for people in the states I've read it ranges from 1-3+ weeks. Not everyone with the silver springs are having problems so I don't know if they'll upgrade until you do.

I've read the cheap Federal bulk is good, I'm heading out this saturday to fire some off and see. I shot a brick of Winchester Super X 40gr through mine last Sat and it worked beautifully.

i have put well over 1500 rounds of federal bulk through my m&p 15-22 and have not had one single malfunction! it has working great for me! however, if one were to want to buy one of those fancy blue springs for his rifle and install it himself, where would one go to get one? thanks cheers

Hey Gang...

I was a bit concerned about the talk on this post about broken extractors and problem with the rifles. So, I sent an email to a customer service representative from Smith & Wesson. Here is the email and the reponses:

Hello!

I currently own one of the M&P 15-22 rifles from one of the early batches. I love the rifle, and aside from a few FTF's and FTE's with cheaper ammo, I have no complaints. I consider this a fine product, in line with the quality that I have come to expect from S&W products.

I have been reading, however, that quite a few other owners are experiencing broken extractors due to a design flaw, or improper bolt-spring weight.

I was wondering what your company is doing to rectify this issue. Should I cease use of the firearm until the problem is fixed? Is there any other information that you can provide to me with regards to this issue?

Thank your for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you

Many of the early models did not have a problem, we are not recalling any of the 15-22’s.

Hello!

Thank your for the reply. It is good to know that there shouldn't be any problems. If it was not the earlier models, which ones were having problems?

So just to clairfy; if I am using my firearm in a safe manner as laid out in the users manual, and using quality, factory ammuntion, I can be assured that the extractor or any other factory installed part is not likely to break under normal useage.

I don't mean to bother you...I just don't want the rifle to go "pop" in my face when I am using it after having questioned you about it's safety.

Thanks again,

When reading the internet chat I know it seems like the problem is huge, but out of the thousands of firearms out there without any problems we don’t hear too much from them. While I can’t guarantee your rifle will or will not experience the problem we are not recalling them.

So there ya go...

Thanks for the report Ty. Two friends have reported this issue but thus far I have had none. I'll keep shooting it till it breaks.

I will not buy one again until they sort this.....every time you fire the bloody thing you are never sure if she's going to pop!......I may get a later model run...but until then the SR22 keeps on going!

hello all!

it is unfortuneate that there seems to be alot of negitive chatter about this rifle. i am not sure what the circumstances surrounding the failures have been but i can say this: in the just over three weeks that i have owned one of these rifles (which happens to be a early model) i have fired just over 1500 rounds out of it. i have had no fail to feed, fail to fire, or fail to eject's. the useage that i it gets is normal, standing unsupported or prone with a bi-pod. i do do alot of shooting on the move as well but never any jumping or rolling ''rambo'' type stuff. i have always cleaned it after every use and take very good care of my firearms. i hope that new buyers won't take the negitive chatter to heart and be discouraged about buying this great piece of kit. i am not trying to start a fight here but just because somebody has experienced a problem, doesn't mean that it is happening to every rifle out there. i use federal bulk pack ammo that shoots 1260fps and that is all that i have used so far. until i experience problems with said ammo, i will continue using it. again not trying to start a war or fight here, just wanted to give my two cents.

thanks all, cheers, jeremy

Serial # range of malfunctioning rifles

Hi, any clue in the serial # when the rifle was made. Just wondering if the rifles that are malfunctioning are all made around the same time. I'm going to shoot mine for the first time tomorrow, if it's going to go, i hope it goes early so i can get the repair over with.

Just had mine out at the range last weekend. Used Federal american eagle 36gr and Winchester bulk 555 pack. Went through about 300 rounds and had 1 FTE. Did 3 magazines in a row with rapid fire with no issues (have the silver spring), so hopefully I wont have problems with it.

Overall very pleased with the performance and accuracy. Everyone at the range wanted to try it and those that did really liked it.

Bought my 15-22 last Saturday and just got out today and tested it. I put 600 rounds through it and the only issue was 4 FTE with 100 rounds of Remington, I then put 500 Winchester super X 40gr without an issue.

Wow, Remington ammo sucks, news flash...

I've put 250 rounds of Federal #710 through mine so far, only problem was a single smokestack jam, i.e. failure to eject. I do like these rifles, I think the mag design could be better though, quite easy to have rounds flip back to front while loading them, bit more tricky to get the rims in the right order compared to Black Dog or Ciener mags. Can't get more than 24 round in them either, although their website says 25 round capacity.

Well I got a lemon. No more than 5 rounds before I get an FTE. Tried a bunch of different ammo over 2 days. Now I am stuck paying for shipping to get it repaired and probably won't have it for the whole summer.

sending it back over 1 FTE??

"I tried a bunch of different ammo over 2 days"

About 200 rounds - an FTE every 2 to 3 rounds and at no time did I get more than 5 rounds.

oh crazy, might want to research it a bit more before sending, some of the fixes are as simple as bending the extractor/ejector, otherwise it just sucks about the lemon and its unacceptable on S&W's part
