sako 85 stainless laminate

I am currently considering purchasing a sako 85 stainless laminate, and I am looking for input on this rifle from people that own or have actually used the sako 85.

I own a 85 Finnlight in 270. Shoots, great, feels great. 5 round clover leafs at 100m (unless the shooter screws up - which happens).

I don't mind the stock. I like the feel and the balance of the rifle a lot.
Obviously can't comment on the laminate stock.

I have topped it with a Z600 scope. Only one of my rifles I have actually used hunting since I own it (3 seasons/??).

I wasnt talking about my time being 3-4 weeks it has taken months to get it done...I just have that left apparently. I was talking about the fact you mentioned that McMillian had actions there to build stocks for the 85...which they dont or maybe have a couple, just not mine.

Ahhh! Got you now! Yeah when I had my TRG-S done they had an action for that stock, the same for when my AIII was built, and I only inquired about the Sako 85 action as I don't have a Sako 85 but was thinking of purchasing one. I personally don't like the straight stock design of the Sako 85 and was checking to see if it could be inlet ed to a Sako 75 stock. Turns out I ended up going in a completely different direction anyways! I Was told directly from Ryan who is head of production at McMillan that a Sako 85 action was not needed and that they could inlet it no problem with what they had there. I am however not sure if he was referring to a rifle they have on hand, or another customers rifle? He did not go into that much detail!

As for scope and mounts,I am looking at my personal favorite, the Swarovski 3x10x42 mounted in the new one piece ring mounts from Sako.

I’m not sure about the new one piece ring mounts but I know that the old 2 piece Optilock set has the scope mounted fairly high, even in the extra low rings, they can mount a 52 mm obj. lens. Have you considered other mounting system?

Sako's mounting system is major turn off for me.

The new one piece ring mounts are lower than the separate rings/bases.

I will take a 280 AI Cooper..... would fit nicely in my cabinet....

Only hunting rifles with stainless actions will find a home in my gun room.;)

I'd be all over the custom 280 AI on a 700 route if it was me.

That is still a possibility.:D

Another choice would be to buy a new Sako 75/85 in a 270 and order a custom 280 AI to your liking...

I won't likely be purchasing any 270 in this lifetime.:D

Unless I buy it so cheap that I can quickly turn it over for a good profit,or rebarrel it so the total cost is no more than the cost of a new rifle in the chambering of my choice.:p

There, I fixed your typo...:)

A lightly used Sako 75 SS action, custom .280AI barrel, in a McMillan EDGE Sako 75 pattern, would be just about perfect...

I mounted my Leupold VX-111 4.5-14X40mm on my Sako 85 Gray Wolf 22-250 with the low Optilock 2 piece mounts yes there is a lot of room to fit a larger objective lens scope on but that isn't what I was concerned about when I used these mounts.

There is more to the ring height then fitting the objective lense to the rifle when I mount a scope I want to have my eye perfectly lined up/looking thru the center of the scope I don't want to take time to re-adjust where my head is so I can see thru the scope correctly.

This can and will speed up target aquisition.

Yes I know you don't like 270's but they have three new Sako 75's chambered in the 270 at reduced price. Just thought you might be interested. That's all...

I already saw them in the ad,as per my second post on this thread, but the price is still a little high when I add in a rebarrel.

nevermind, it sold...

Then again a 24" 280 barrel could be installed on a finnlight,if the price of the rifle was right.

I found with my Optilock extra low mounts that it could have been just a little lower for my liking and ended up with Control scope mounts. This system work perfect for me...

That would make a very sweet hunting rig. My only real beef with the 75 series was the weight, the edge stock would help with that, if I was rebarreling it would be the contour my 300 winny was in the Sako AV series, I would guess standard contour.

Unfortunately,I don't see a lot of new sako 75s in 7mmremmag being advertised.

Do you know of a source for the one-piece ringmounts in Canada? I have found one source in the US, but they won't ship to Canada, and one in the UK. I'm mounting a Kahles CL 2-7x36 on a new Sako 85 and would like to get it pretty low. Also, do you know if the front ringmount can be positioned anywhere along the front dovetail, or if there's a fixed position where it has to sit? I'm curious because the scope tube is fairly short and if the front ringmount can't be positioned towards the back of the tapered dovetail I may have to go with a different mounting system.

I have only seen the ringmounts on the Sako site. When I find a rifle,I will look for some .One of my local Sako dealers is very good at obtaining guns and parts that aren't easy to find.He sold me a very nice Browning European Gold 20 gauge last year that I can't even find online.
