sako 85 stainless laminate

The Remington 700 is still an option.

Stop reminding me,I have already owned a dozen or so 700s.I don't want to wait for a custom, especially with the time it takes to get mcmillans, and factory 700s don't appeal to me at all.

why not download a 7STW or 300 ultra

Because I want to greatly reduce the recoil. You can download a 7mmremmag to where the recoil is close to that of a 280AI,but you can't do the same with a 7mmstw.As well,my 7mmstws don't shoot as consistently at lower velocities,as I discovered while working up loads.Good luck trying to get anywhere close to that lever of recoil with a 300RUM.

Well then, I think you should just go out and get a BLR in 7-08

The 7mm-08 is certainly an option, but I need an all weather, extremely reliable rifle with a good trigger, which to me means a stainless bolt action with either a laminate or synthetic stock. If I needed a door stop or a spare canoe paddle,I might look at the BLR.:D

No , I think you should get a Sako 85 in 260R on special and order a custom 7 mm-08 barrel for it or order a Sako 7 mm-08 barrel from Stoeger...

I am considering buying a sako 85 stainless/synthetic in 7mm-08.It would be cheaper, faster and less hassle than buying a 260 and then having it rebarreled.

Both the 7mmremmag and 7mm-08 have their advantages, and I am considering both,The 7mmremmag will give me more confidence on longer shots, especially on elk and moose.I am used to taking elk and moose up to 500 yards away, and the 7mmremmag will still allow for that with the right load.As well, all of my hunting partners use 7mmremmags so we can buy in bulk, and share all components if someone runs short. However to reduce the recoil,I will need to carry a heavier gun.
On the other hand,a lighter 7mm-08 rifle will provide even less recoil, but I will have to be more careful in my shot selection. The 7mm-08 also allows me the luxury of necking down 308win Lapua brass, which is not available in 7mmremmag,or in a cartridge easily formed to 7mmremmag.
Now if only Sako chambered the 85 in 280,I would split the difference, and possibly even rechamber to a 280AI.;)
As it sits,I have found rifles in both chamberings, and am now stuck with making a choice which hasn't been easy.I change my mind at least two or three times each day.:D

Get the 7mm Rem Mag, I have a Limbsaver Recoil pad that will fit that stock for you. You would be amazed how much difference it makes!

I am well aware of what a top quality recoil pad can do.I have fired thousands of rounds through unbraked Mcmillan stocked rifles in 7mmstw,300RUM,338x8mmremmag,375H&H etc.All wore premium recoil pads.

Only you can decide what is right for you. Either will be a fine rifle. With the 7mm Rem Mag you add a little wieght and hitting power, with a 7mm 08 you are a little lighter with less recoil. Either way is a win in my books. Can't go wrong with a Sako IMHO!

I still say go with the 7mm Rem Mag, They're cool!!!!! :)

I know you like the 7mm's, but in this case, unless you go custom 280AI, I'd go with a Sako 85 LSS in .30-06, load up some 168gr TSX, and call it good...:)

Bewteen the 7-08 and 7RM for 400+ shots on large animals, the 7RM gets the nod...

Regardless of what I choose,it definitely will not be a 270win,or a 30-06.:D
If I was to buy either,it would only be because the price was so low that I could have it rebarreled to 280 for the price of a 7mm-08 or a 7mmremag rifle.

Except I much prefer a stainless barreled action, and I am not that fond of the av action.I had a limited edition Sako av silvertip in 375 h&h many years ago,and I just couldn't warm up to the gun even after installing a mcmillan hunter stock.

I will look at the burris rings and bases though.

It's funny, personal taste is a fickle thing. I've owned all the Sako action's except for the 85 and my favourite is the AV style.

I have the Leupold one piece high rings and haven't had any problems with a 30mm tube, 50 mm objective. Impressed with the fit and quality.I went looking for the Optilock one piece rings but had no luck. The finish matches the gun really well too. Here's a pic.

Great scope, but it looks totally out of place on a sporting rifle.I have the NXS 3.5X15X50 myself, but it is on my 700-5R,which I won't be carrying around much.
