Let's get real here folks.
There are huge amounts of deer in Saskatchewan...giant deer with massive racks!
You just have to go a couple hundred miles north of Black Lake to find em![]()

There has been a problem with some out of province hunters shooting deer and leaving them when they realize that they weren't as large as they were hoping for. This will attempt to try to track down the problem children.
I think ALL nonres hunters should be draw, and ALL Saskres hunters allowed no-limit sustainance hunting.
SERM issues me a Sustainance tag, and records date. I bring in head, get another tag, SERM records info and date, I bring in a head, etc... You can keep your freezer full with up to two deer. Can't give it, sell it, or trade it away. (You want to do that?? Get a Regular Tag)
with the few hunters left in Sask, we would not hurt the population one bit. The four deer left in this province would be killed in the first couple years and there would be no further risk of death from Deer collisions with cars!
Hey... if it saves even one life, it is worth it!

What planet did you come from?
What he is describing is what has actually happened over the past few years to our mule deer. Unlimited number could be taken by any sask resident hunter willing to continue turning in heads and getting new tags. No draw no limit. "Earn a buck" they called it. Turn in 2 doe heads and go get a buck tag. Then do it again and again and again. As long as they had heads to test for CWD the provincial regulators were fine with it.
Landowners and most hunters I know were in a total uproar over it. SERM would not listen to us at the local public meeting we scheduled with them to get the facts. I asked the head of SERM what the ideal number of deer for our area was after he told us that the CWD positives we had were the result of overcrowding. His answer was "ZERO!" We all knew that this kind of hunting pressure would erase most of the mule deer and Yep! it happened.
I personally know of 2 guys shooting over 100 deer each in the first year of the "control program". Really, no lie! I also know landowners who had Christmas day repeatedly interrupted by hunters. This is after a long season of the same. Since the mulies have virtually disappeared here word is out and things have died down. The new policy is only to moniter the herd for CWD presence not eradicate. Translation: heads rolled at serm and the draw is finally back in place. This used to be one of the best trophy mule deer areas anywhere, and now you are hard pressed to find any mule at all. The worst wildlife mis management program I have ever seen or heard of.

Far too many hunters will take a 2.5-3.5 year old deer in the last week to fill the freezer, but refuse to shoot a doe.
With this harsh winter I hope that it kills all of the CWD deer that are left in Saskatchewan and Alberta. I agree with you that the government mis-managed the deer herds. If healthy deer are dying from winter kill you would think that all CWD deer would be the first to go, but of course that won't make any sense to a government official and probably continue their useless program. Now for the Saskatchewan draw for Canadian-Residence, (I'm from Alberta) I hope that their is some fine print stating that the license fee "must"
be paid within one month after the draw, otherwise it will be cancelled. BTW, the licence fee should be $500.00. Now this should keep the "want a be" trophy hunters out of the province. I've hunted Saskatchewan whitetail since 1988 and only taken 6 animals to date. If people are going to hunt saskatchewan to bag a trophy then bag a trophy. I've witnessed and heard of Canadian-Residence shooting small bucks (between 100 to 130) on the last day to fill their tag. I'm sure that many of those bucks had potential to be true trophy bucks. The same applies with the Americans..............they as well shoot small bucks and that is from the first to last day of their hunt. I say up the license to $500.00 and pay within one month of being drawn.
