Savage 10TR le/military

Got a 20" inch for 650$ used (never used) today!

Looking for scope, bipod, rings and muzzlebrake. Keep in mind I'm just starting up shooting and I plan to shoot mainly at 100m range, maybe someday 300-500m if I get access.

Bipod: hight 6-9" or 9-13"? : http://www.amazon.ca/Bessky®-Qualit...?ie=UTF8&qid=1446352659&sr=8-1&keywords=bipod. Any good, if not Caldwell XLA?
Muzzlebrake : http://www.amazon.ca/HKSTEK®Model-T...8&qid=1446352947&sr=8-4&keywords=muzzle+brake. Worth spending more (I don't plan 150 for it)?

If you're going to buy a good 308 like this, i'd go with a traditional scope, rather than a low magnification AR. Of course, it depends on your range distance, but even a 200 yard range, I like a 4-12, so either of your suggested scopes would be fine, I'm sure.

Congrats on the purchase!

I had 10tr for while now. Eclxcelent rifle but finiky on the ammo. Just to safe any of u few $, don't go less then 165 gr on yr bullet. I found that 168 smk with 43 imr40 64 is best combo for mine. That's after few hundreds rounds of different factory ammo.

U really don't need muzzle break. Atrs break didn't do much for my rifle. So end those 100$ on better stock.
I highly recommend MDT aluminum stock. H3 in particular. Got it on mine.

I've read that the 5R rifling was better with 170-180r bullet. I'll try to plank my Norinco 145gr just to see how it shoot's and shooting match ammo for more serious stuff.

I'm still looking for rings and scope. I'm leaning toward a Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 for $359 ($100 off) or Burris Droptine 4.5-14x42 for $289. The Droptine is the same optic found in the Fullfield II, which is well rated for the price. On other hand, the Diamondback HP has a similar glass than the Viper, but in Diamondback tube, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm still on decided, but I think at that price the Diamondback Hp would be hard to beat from what I gathered. I just leaned today that I had a 100-600m range at CFB located 10km away from home. This is why I leaning forward on a bit better optic than I initially planned.

I just got new glass for my TR:

I don't know about your rifle but mine's not finiky at all... I shoot 155gr Hornady Steel Match out to 953m and hit an 18" target all day... it groups them 1/2" at 100

Haven't shot the 168SMK out to the 953m but at the 100 it is still in the 1/2"-3/4" groups

It's almost boring it's so accurate

Lol, so true! At closer ranges, it was almost too easy. Mine makes solid 1km hits with 168 Noslers, but next time I’m going to try the 178gr SMKs that I stockpiled.

My friend’s TR hits 3in targets at 300m consistently with 150gr Blue Bullocks, totally lucked out with his (they don’t do so well beyond that).

I believe, and this is just me, the 20" tube is limited to 800y or less the 24 will get you to 1000y.

Out to 600y I doubt anyone could tell the difference between the 2.....

My $.02
There's so much conjecture out there about barrel length that it's hard to choose. Conventional wisdom says that you need a long barrel for long range. There's lots of quasi-scientific stuff on the internet passing for "testing", that says it's not true. My own 1000 yard gun has a 32 inch barrel and it's a tack driver at distance. I'd like to hear from shooters who've tried the shorter tubes at longer ranges to give me some real-world perspective.

I am greener than a fresh cut Christmas tree on this and have a 24" barrel, but from reading, it would seem the .308 not being a very high volume cartridge, the difference may be negligible! It all would depend on the distance you want to reach, the projectile and type of powder you are going to use! From what I understand the longer barrel will allow more powder to be burned and or a slower powder to be used, more choices to find the magic potion that gets you better grouping at distance! Then again you may find that potion that will work as well in a 20" barrel too!
Having said that, my wife says an extra 4" would help anyone go the distance and hit the target!!!;)

You just did......

My go to "long range" gun (out to 1400y) has a 28" barrel..... And it isn't a 308!

Hi guys just finished the mods on the rifle, it's now got

- PTG bolt body
-PTG .300 precision recoil lug made of 4140
-HS3 chassis
-ferrel steel scope mount
-stainless old version barrel nut from PTG
-Shillen select stainless match barrel 1:10 4 ratchet groove.

Also a PTG precision bolt head that cant be installed yet because of some new twit at the QC level that didnt check the inner diameter of the cartridge well...it was milled for the 6mmppc not the .308...need to be shaved from .457 to .483...other than that all is great, will test it out Sunday. A new nightforce ATACR will soon be on top of this with badger ordonnance rings.

The barrel swap is a 5 minute job, you just need the go/ngo gauges, barrel ratchet and oak blocks.

Its not really a savage 10 tr anymore but heck..here it is anyhow.

Holy chit! That looks amazing! I never thought about rebarrelling because it shot great out of the box, but good to know that it’s an easy swap if I ever burn this barrel out (unlikely as it is).

Looks amazing. Can't wait for your range report.
Where did the PTG stuff come from?

yes!! order directly but they are backorder, expect 4-6 weeks of waiting. Not too bad, they are much better than factory and the fit makes the action feel better.
