Savage 10TR le/military

That's why snap-caps were invented. Those things have saved me lots of grief.

tell me about it! Exact same dilema... I've been considering everything from moving my bushnell 3200 fixed 10x off my markII, to stealing my 700 5R's NF nxs 5.5-22, or (dont tell the wife i'm even considering it) buying a nightforce 3.5-15, or sightron (so many magnification options I'm hopelessly lost there), I've been looking at schmidt and bender's hunting scope for 1500, or a handful of the vortex options... It's such a pain because on top of that, there's so few places, where you can go and look through all of them at any sort of a distance looking for clarity of image. (plus I don't trust bullet drop compensating reticles, especially when I reload).

There's also the little dirty cheating bastard inside of me that wants to try out the Burris Eliminator 3 laser range finding scope that automatically calculates the bullet drop based off your muzzle velocity and puts the little light up on it hehehehe... it could be so fun, but I worry the novelty would wear off and I'd be sitting there wondering 'whats the point...'

the two that really have me stuck is the nightforce MOAR reticle (my current has the np-r1 and I love it) and the sightron LRMOA reticle. Any of you have an opinion on the two? likes or dislikes about either? Suggestions are more than welcome since I clearly can't make up my own mind!

I've been finding that I want better glass for this rifle too. I'm probably going to end up pulling off the Elite 6500 off my 700p and sticking it on the Savage, or just flip the Elite Tactical 5-15 to upgrade to something else....I'm hearing Sightron SIII being thrown around a lot. Nightforce is out of my budget for now, but hopefully one day.

any suggestion as for the m/b ? Is all m/b increase the noise or some actually will reduce it ?

it's sadly illegal to reduce/suppress the noise... otherwise I'm sure we would ALL be going that route :D my understanding with most of the brakes is, that for the individual shooter, it doesn't make it so much louder, as its just louder for everyone else around you to the sides. (this is my experience from being beside someone shooting with one, and standing behind them. night and day difference.

It's really to bad it's only available in 308

Yeah, but I'm figuring savage barrels are easy enough to get in a different cal if and when the time comes. It feels strange to me, because I have a rem 700 5r in .308 as well, so It'll be interesting to see which one shoots better (although lets be honest, they'll probably both outshoot me, who knows! :D). The savage will have it's work cut out for it though

I already have a 308 and I mean this rifle is meant as a nice gesture to Leo's and military folks so why wouldn't they go with a better or more popular caliber that is also utilized by professionals

Are you saying you want it in 223? Because otherwise I'm pretty sure 308 7.62 is about as 'standard / popular' as you can get :) It'll be my first savage centerfire so I hope it doesn't let me down from everything that i've read saying they'll shoot the wings off a fly at 100 yrds. I've been saving a few flies all winter just to test this...

I ironically was looking for a 223 bolt gun when I stumbled upon this one and thought wellllll..... maaaybe... now for 223 I'm considering the mossberg mvp but the complete lack of aftermarket options has me a little worried... what if the barrel won't shoot better than minute of gopher... that's a topic for another thread though isn't it.

I definitely will, thanks! I love all these great tips, so much to learn, so little time and money to practice, hahah!

Last night I pulled the TR apart and messed around with the trigger. It was a pretty light pull from the factory, so last night I adjusted the Accutrigger to the lightest setting and see if I jerk any shots the next tiem I’m at the range.

I lightened the pull on my 700P as well, which was just as easy. As far as comparing the 10TR to the 700P, I hope I didn’t come across as trying to prove one was better than the other. The Remington was my first bolt-action rifle. The wife bought it for me for Christmas and I’ve only taken it to the range once before I took the Savage.

The only reason I brought it up was because it was the only bolt action I’ve had experience with and the only thing I had to compare to. I’m very inexperienced when it comes to these rifles, so I just notated the differences I observed. I’ve probably got years ahead of me before I can start talking about which rifle is better, and I certainly didn’t want to start a debate over that here.

Mister Donut,
Enjoy your new rifles, shoot them, have fun !!!
When question time comes around, come back here and ask away.
The shooters/hunters on CGN are great people, lots of experiance.
Listen to them, don't re-invent the wheel, we've all been there, we've all made mistakes.
Just have fun, enjoy your time with your rifles.

Cheers

Oh boy, I can't tell you how much fun it was. I was grinning from ear to ear when I walked up to my target sheet. Hitting the gong was so much fun too....not sure why I found that so rewarding because the gong was quite large and there was a lot of leeway as far as precision is concerned. Thanks everyone, having a blast here....might be spending a bit too much time on here though, wife is always giving me a dirty look when I get in front of the keyboard.....not that she'll be any happier if I spend more time at the range, haha!

LOL make it rain brother!

Glad to hear you managed to pick one up buddy. I'm running into the problem of deciding what scope I want to put on mine, nevermind deciding on what height rings.

Thanks man, Im extremely happy about it as well and really looking forward to it. Even got some reloading equipment to really get the best shots I can out of it.
I even sent away for my RPAL and was able to track down one of the pistols from our tour! Had to get rid of some of the ones in the safe... but Im glad I found one, since I missed out on the deal by being a retard and not having my RPAL sooner!

Proper ring height for 10TR with a 5.5 - 22 x 50mm scope?

I am at a loss to figure out the best ring height for the scope for my 10TR - what do you suggest for a 5.5 -22x50mm scope?
Tube Diameter: 30mm (1.18in)

Thanks

I put a Vortex PST 4-16x50 sfp on mine with vortex tactical 30mm low rings. Fits fine even with the see through caps on (clears about 1/4" with caps on, 3/8" with em off.) Seems to fit my eye fine too. Only caution is if you are worried about bolt handle clearance, it gets a little close. Not a problem for me because I don't fully grasp the handle, just lift and cycle with my palm.
