Savage Axis .223 or Merkel SXS .375 H&H???

Do you have any advice on what to do with the prairie dogs after I shoot them with the Merkel??? I'm assuming stew...

The only wild game I have eaten are a few starlings my cat, Stumpy, brought home...

Well after all these years of providing for you, I think you owe Stumpy the cat some prairie dog stew. Its only fair. Just plunk em whole (you don't need to skin em or gut or anything) in the slow cooker and let em mellow for 8 or 10 hours.

Bacon wrapped on the barbecue,.
As far as your dilemma of cartridges and rifles go, this is a no brainer.
Pick up one of those non restricted AR style "poodle shooters"and go to town- a prairie dog town that is!

Then when you head over for Buff simply change out the mags for the big banana clips taped up and you are good to go.
You are welcome.

Do you mean the ones that shoot 6mm plastic pellets or the ones that shoot paintballs??? Will they kill a prairie dog and buffalo?

That is not really fair... he cleaned the starlings for me...

I just checked Boyds website..... No Thumbhole stock options listed for the SxS Merkel.

Looks like it's the Axis for the win

I don't think the ammo would be available in SA for that stuff, I mean the highly tactical Zombie approved ammo - painball ammo for cape buffalo, really , get serious will ya? I'm trying to help here and you are talking about something Gecko45 would use!!

Nope... I think I can modify a Handi Sterling thumbhole for the Merkel... I have one on order in Applejack color...

Back to my dilemma...

That's not even a comparison. Ounce of gold, or someone's stool sample is a little more realistic

Weeeeellll....

If I was going for Olympic gold and they requested a sample to test for steroids, I might choose the Savage....

Back to my dilemma...

So... I have been reading up on this .30/06, and I am a little less than half inclined to believe that it could be the "ultimate" for my purposes....
It is the ultimate cartridge, because if you run out of ammo, you can purchase more at the nearest hick town prairie store.............

Due to the recent swell in popularity of this cartridge, local gas stations are sold out of ammo and are not expecting shipments anytime soon. I'd seriously look at something else. You don't want to book a $20,000 cape buffalo hunt and not be able to get ammo at a local African tyre shop just in case you forget yours.

Dilemma solved, the ammo question is answered by using green tip M-855/SS-109 for the head on buffalo shot you'll surely experience, and any reasonable varmint bullet that shoots well in your Savage will take care of the PDs. If the first round on your buffalo (be sure the buff is at least 45") is a varmint bullet, the head on shot will quickly follow, so be sure to ensure that all of the subsequent rounds in the magazine have green tips, which identify the M-855s. You might want to pursue the PD hunt first. My invoice for consulting fees to follow, hopefully it can be satisfied prior to your landing in Africa.

Truthfully that Merkel is way over priced too and that stock looks like someone carved is with a rasp. There is no dangerous game rifle worth more than $399.98....unless of course you get the skull pattern on the Axis!

Well, the Axis isn't CRF, the Merkel might be depending on how tight you hold the shells while you're loading it, or how sweaty your fingers or how hairy your palms are.
