Savage Precision Carbine

I sent it to Jerry at Mystic Precision for bolt timing adjustment and bedding. :sniper:

You will have to give us all a report on that when you get it back! To bad you didn't try it out first for a fair comparison. I would like that done on mine as well when the $$$ is around(and the better rail and rings) :sniper:

I will for sure. I'm not sure if I'll be a good reference though because I'm pretty new to rifles. It's been mostly pistols for me since I started shooting.

I thought about trying it out before sending it for the work but I'm hoping to have it back in time for my days off after Christmas so that I can get to the range and maybe to the field.

I too would be interested in hearing how that bolt-timing adjustment turns out. Keep us updated!

And I'll post some groups the next time I'm out... which should be Saturday if the weather is permitting.

 I just got quoted $60 + tax for a spare Savage 4 rnd mag. Is that what they're worth???? (SSS isn't making high caps for 223 yet.)

How is the stock? If you check this link http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=232047 the guy said "The finish is very porous and gets dirty very easy. It doesn't clean up well with regular soap and water." Is it true?

I wasn't blown away by the finish. Mine looked like it got smudged before the paint was dry. I got the impression that they don't have their painting method down 100%. If that's my biggest complaint about the gun I'll be a happy shooter.

Blued mags should be under $50.

Jerry
Would all the short action mags be the same, or does it need to be specifically for the Precision Carbine?

New to Savage Rifles

I have had many tactical rifles and never have been a Savage fan and my experience has always been with Remington 700 actions for tactical work both when I was operational and otherwise. I had a Remington Tactical fluted barrel cut down to 20" years ago by Dalask Arms and they did a fantastic job. Harvested a nice big 4 point out to 400m with it. I was looking for a medium weight barrel in a carbine to use as a hunting rifle with just a regular Leupold scope nothing tactical as I would use it primarily out to 200- 300m.
So I'm poking around and saw the Savage package deals, well heck there was a cheap 243 the wifey needed so I picked it up for her then I spotted the Savage Precission Carbine and that as well as everything I have been reading about the Accu Stock-Accu Trigger - Button rifled barrel and such just tweeked my interest so It followed us home too. It now is mounted with a Leupold 3x9x40 and looks to be a sweet little hunting carbine.
I will probably at some point replace the Leupold with a tactical as the old expnesive Tactical Virus is stirring in me lol!!! Here is my question who else has one and can you post pictures of your targets and with the loads, group sizes please. Also how do you feel overal about these little arms??
This was an informative post but I am hungry for more, Thanks .

I just got back from the range after my first outing with a 10PC that I bought off the EE. Slapped a Bushy 3200 10X on it using Weaver Grand Slam bases and Warne QD rings (all I had lying around). Shot a couple of .75-.8" 10-shot groups at 100yds off off crappy benches (I could see my heartbeat moving the crosshairs from leaning against the bench). Wind was 25-30km/hr straight on, gusting to 50km/h. Was using HSM M118LR (175g SMK) factory match, which is pretty decent but apparently not quite as consistent as FGMM. So, with no load workup and challenging conditions, I'm pretty happy that the rifle shows some promise. On a better bench with better conditions, and some loadwork, I expect I should be able to get this thing down into the .5s. Which is all that I can reasonably expect from a stock gun in this price range. Got a 6500 2.5-16 coming, and need to get some better mounts, before I start working on loads. I'm looking at this as a dual-purpose hunting/short-range tactical rig. It's a bit nose-heavy as it is now, but with the heavier 6500 mounted, it should balance out nicely and be reasonable to pack around as a hunting rifle.

^ I am also contemplating this rifle as a hunting back-up/fun range time gun.

How heavy is it all dressed up and ready to rock n roll?

It's quite ###y, I must admit.

Should be able to get something rolling around 9 to 10lbs depending on the scope weight.

Jerry

I've got all the rifles one needs.... but I just "need" one more:rolleyes::onCrack:

I've got a nice light T3 for carrying around in the bush, this 10PC would make a nice stand hunting/backup rifle.... hmmmm. hey I could even lend it to the old man who's growing recoil shy with age... ya, that's it....

Honestly most of this is your fault Jerry. With all that talk of how great these Savage's are, cheap add-ons available from SSS, do-it-yourself barrel swaps, accu-trigger/accu-stock, out-of-the-box accuracy, and the list goes on.

Maybe I'd be happier with a 10fp bedded in a hand rubbed antique oil finish walnut stock, or better yet a Stevens 200 re-barrelled with a heavy sporter contour Shilen in the same said stock. oh man... :bigHug:

anyone have a Boyd's walnut stock for thier savage?

Jerry should become the canadian dealer rep for all the precision Savage rifles and extras:D. I barely have enough time behind this one and I am already thinking of how to dress it up in better mounts and rings. Next one is going to be a custom barreled action in .223.

Goose25- The rifle balances very nice with a larger scope on it and with the short 20" barrel clears the tree branches;) A great all around rifle. Send pics of that hand rubbed antique oil finish walnut stock when you find it!

I'm liking the new model for 2010 Not a fan of the stock but I just ordered a 10 FCP w/ muzzle brake - which is not really needed for my use I wanted the fluted barrel and the 10 precision carbine didn't have flutes about 3 days after I ordered my gun I see the new catalog... Duh!! the 2010 model 10 predator hunter in max1 camo has a 22" fluted barrel this was just what I needed... best of both worlds 2" longer barrel & fluted.

Savage 10PC 308 upgraded optics.

Well I finally swaped out the optics the Leupold 3x9x40 hunting scope was put on the wife's 243 Model 11 we bought as a package deal and couldn't wait to get that cheap Bushnell off of her rifle then got the Tactical Vari-X-III Long Range Military M1 3.5x10X40mm and put that on the 10PC.
Hope the pic turns out.

Can't wait to wring it out and find the recipe it likes for a load.
Cheers

^ Nioce!!!! Where did you buy it?

I handled the accustock demo at Lebarons today, Its very solid. I was impressed. Although, I do remember reading somewhere that it could still use a good bedding job over the aluminum block.

Is the trigger guard metal? any plastic besides the stock on the entire rifle?

yes it's metal, I would wait before buying.. the MODEL 10 PREDATOR
HUNTER, MAX-1 gun for 2010 I think is nicer as it's got a 22" fluted barrel same stock as the 10 precision carbine just different camo.
