I have acquired a Shultz & Larsen M68DL rifle chambered in 7x61 S & H along with ammo, brass and die set. I know little about this rifle other than the basics I have found online. I was hoping some of you can tell me a little more about it and what the year of manufacture was and what the value might be. Serial number is 131XX. Thanks for looking and for any assistance.

They are a finely tuned rifle with great craftsmanship.
Too bad it's chambered in the 7x61 S&H.
If it was stamped with any of the other calibers, it'd be worth a kings ransom.

Unfortunately the 7x61 S&H ship has sailed.

Might fetch $750-$850?

I'm interested too. I have one just like yours that the original purchaser ordered in 6mm from the factory with an oil finish .
Maybe a 308 Norma mag in the future
I paid $1400 for mine , maybe he seen me coming , but the heart wants what it wants . I think a guy wants a motivated buyer for these rifles ( like I was )

Your rifle is in excellent condition for a 50 year old rifle.

S&L gained their reputation on target rifles and their craftsmanship was a good as anyone and much better than most.

The 7 x 61 S&H is still a great cartridge and brass may be formed from 7 mm Remington Mag with relative ease if you can't find new cases. (Norma still does runs every few years) .

While I think the "value" should be North of $800.00 the realistic range is about what Kamlooky posted.

The S&L :) is probably my favorite bolt action rifle. On the red cover of an early Norma reloading manual, there are three cartridges shown. Supposedly they are the the result of a development co-operation between Norma and S&L. The 7x61 S&H, 308 Norma Magnum and the 358 Norma Magnum. I'm basically a shooter and hunter, not a collector but I did make it a 'quest' of sorts to acquire the three, in S&L's. The 7x61 S&H and the 308 NM were calibre leaders and followed by development in North America, ;) years later, of the 7mm Remington Mag and the 300 Winchester Mag. As I've been told, following the intro of the 7mm RM, Norma supposedly made a few :) 'changes' to the inner profile and the metallurgy of the 7x61 S&H case in an effort to 'match' the 7mm RM. These later cases were head stamped 7x61 Super a change from the earlier head stamp of 7x61 S&H. Hunting around a little, brass can be acquired. Nothing shabby about the 7x61 and mine got the call a couple of years ago for an Antelope hunt in AB. The 358 NM gets the call for my next Moose hunt.

Nothing shabby about the 7x61 ......

My S&L 54J with it's 26" barrel will match 7mm Rem. Mag velocities when using 7 x 61 Super brass. Last year at the range I managed to put 3 - 3 shot groups into a sub 3/4" clusters at 200 yards. Repeatable sub 1/2 MOA groups from a 60+ year old factory rifle show the quality that went into each of these early Danish rifles.

;) Bingo!! Hey Boo, it's been a while!! I'll have to give you a shout on my next trip through to visit young Son at Horsefly. Keeping it short, I had a discussion with an old European gunsmith in Wells, years ago, on S&L rifles. It was his take that their quality was top line and the barrels, second to none. The equivalent of Douglas air gage. No complaints with what I have.

Just for the sake of it and for our collective enlightenment , can you tell us when exactly that advertisement was published (month/year) and in which gun magazine or book ?

That very specific rifle was the one that my cousin and I were lusting for, back in the late sixties and early seventies, but that we never had a chance to buy (money was scarce at the time).

And I have always been fascinated by the big Schultz & Larsen Model 56A Super Magnum action (and rifle) that Roy Weatherby had chosen for his huge .378 Magnum cartridge. A four rear locking lugs action for such a powerful round was appearing to me as a mechanical stunt. Now, I know that the Model 56A Super Magnum action was indeed amply strong enough for the task.

Some fifty years ago ...

That would be the Super 7x61 S&H. - dan

Close to 20 years ago there was an offering at the local gun show of one of these
in 308win with a $1500.00 tag attached to it.
Me eyes watered for quite a while after see'in'er.
She was in as new condition as anything I've ever seen.
I still think back awn the pretty gal and wondered whom
swept'er awff her feet.
Definitely the won that gartzs away......................:slap:

Sell it to a S & L collector as is or if you want to shoot it hunting, have it re chambered to 7mm Rem Mag... thousands have been done... buy ammo anywhere...

or sit on it and buy all the 7x61 SUPER ammo you can find and sell it all in another 40 years...

Right you are. I had stated 7x61 Super but a check of the head stamp on some used cases and that on some of the new unprimed cases I recently 'acquired' shows the head stamp to be

Norma
Super 7x61

Oh, the S&H isn't included in the head stamp.

I just recently acquired 60 virgin Norma Re 7 x 61 S&H cases along with 50 virgin Norma Super 7 x 61 cases. I will have to weigh a few of each to see what differences exist.

Great rifle, but I thought it over built for 7x61. While the one in the OPs initial post is super clean, I agree, sell it to a collector or rechamber to 7RM. I a huge .308 NM fan....that and .358 NM are still cult classics....the 7x61 not so much.

A while back :d I acquired my present ;) comfortable 'stash' of virgin Norma Super 7x61 brass. In an effort to maintain as much consistency and uniformity as possible, I separated out and sold all brass marked with the earlier production Re 7x61 S&H.
