semi-auto M249 Saw by Norinco

you are wrong, it is a SECTION support weapon. The C6 GPMG is the Platoon Support weapon.

Of course you're right about it being issued to the inf as a section support wpn, It is also issued in a variety of other roles for motorized and mechanised forces as part of the veh armament. Let's focus on the fact that the Colonel1972 is correct about everything else. It is a wpn of support which means that sacrifices in accuracy where made to achieve dependable volumes of fire. This is not to say that you can't hit man sized targets with great regularity at 300m, it is just that consideration is secondary to the dependability and volume criteria. The max effective range is designated as 600m, but understand that is a planning figure for commanders and at that range both the gun and the ss109 round stretch the definition of the word effective.
I was a C9 gunner from the first day the CF got them until I was promoted out of the role. I have trained LMG teams for national and international competitions, fired 10's of thousands of rds off vehicle mounts and bipod. The problem with it being single shot, as anyone who ever had to shoot the early PWT or tried to zero one, would know is the firing from an open bolt and the significant amount of weapon movement that occurs between trigger pull and the round going off. I don't think that anyone who ever used one a lot would pay too much for one in a semi-auto role.
A far more useful choice is the LWS. I have believed that rounds on target was better than suppressive fire. Dead guys don't duck and then pop up again to be a pain in your ass.

The mag issue is as the Col described it and it is an option of last resort. Functionality varied from mag to mag (which is a real pain in the ass when it takes 1.7 sec to fire the mag and 20 to change to one that won't feed) it will also eat plastic mags.

All moot anyway since the ITAR restrictions and complexity of the wpn would make it an economical nightmare.

Thanks for articulating in a more coherent manner, what I was trying to say. I retired from the CF in 2005 and my memory is not as sharp as it used to be.

The FN version barely works/doesnt work with stanag mags wouldnt trust chinese on this one.

The problem is the mag springs can't keep up with the rate of fire.

Not a problem with a semi-auto ;)

It wouldn't be called a SAW if it was semi-auto... it'd be a SSAW - Squad Semi Automatic Weapon

Just "SAW" is fine. (Semi Automatic Weapon) I wouldn't be using mine in a 'squad'. Would you?

After reading this whole thread I think I have a better chance of setting up camp in the parking lot at Canadian Tire and waiting for an air soft version (which I'd have to suffer the embarrassment of owning), than waiting for all the stars and cash to align to make this a reality. I'll just have to settle with going to Vegas to shoot one of these. Far better value at the shooting range for me in Vegas than the blackjack table anyway.

I train with airsoft and own real firearms. No shame in owning one if you use it in games to self-improve.

You guys might be interested to hear that a guy at my range today was test firing his air soft M249 modified using a Ruger 10/22 receiver and an SR22 barrel. Very, very cool...
But, it wouldn't cycle given the weight of the M249's charging handle...until I handed over some CCI Stingers, which cycled the action just fine.

Dude, you pay $15K for a gun can't do anything with. You might as well get an airsoft. A few hundred dollars. Take it where ever you want. No one knows the difference but you.

(I actually thought of getting an airsoft once myself, just because replicas were illegal. I ended up getting the real thing...)
