Semi-Sten: CFC AND RCMP approved and Home at Last

I was wondering, anyone has any idea WHERE I could find an 18½ or a 19" rifled barrel blank (chambered or not) in Canada? I wish to make an unrestricted SAS Mk2 with a fake silencer.

I do not know of any inexpensive 9mm barrel blanks.
Have you considered 7.62x25, and using a piece of .303 barrel?

Bits of Pieces in BC has 9mm Montana barrel blanks listed for sale.
w ww.bitsofpieces.com/montanabarrels.html

Their price for a non-contoured 1¼" x 28 CrMo is $232.00 So you should have just enough barrel blank left to make up a normal mk2 barrel and recoup some of your cost.

Hopefully you have access to a lathe so you are not paying exorbitantly to have the barrel turned and chambered.

That idea, I will use later, when I'm done with a regular SAS Mk2 ;) I know a place in the US that sells conversion mag wells for a reasonable price, it's at aa-ok.com

As from brad@aa-ok.com:

If you are referring to ST-5 It is in stock.

Yes we ship to Canada. $25 no promise of delivery

I have been told there is a good machinist somewhere close to where I live who works well and doesn't ask you an arm and a leg for it. I'll see what he can do when I have the barrel. Anyway I intended to pay somewhere around 300$ for the barrel IF I could find one.

Thanks for the tip stencollector.

Navyshooter: as I recall, you have TWO full sized lathes handy, a south bend 9A and a south bend 10K, right?

I must get around to sending you a pic of my 9A horizontal drive.

I do, but the 9A is currently in pieces on a shelf, and is destined to be used as parts to rebuild the 10K....that said, I need to have the time to be able to do it!

Anyone knows what's up with the FRT # for the SAS3? Sten

Anyone knows what happens with the FRT numbers for the SAS3 based Sten?

I heard that Mick's open bolt SemiAuto Sten had been accepted "out of court". If so, good news for that design but I'd really like to know if any owner of SAS3 Sten know if we can still make new ones.

Of course I could go back to square one and build a new SemiAuto Sten on Mick's design but I began with the SAS and would like to finish what I began first. :(

The SAS3 FRT still exists but may be offline, so as to prevent enterprising individuals from merely registering over the phone their open bolt creations as the closed bolt version.

Spencer merely dropped his challenge to the CFCs previous ruling that his guns were prohibs. He is hoping that his newest version will be accepted, but at this point that still hasn't happened. Time will tell.

As an aside, I had my SAS3 out on Saturday shooting it. I use sten mags shortened to 5 rounds, and had the springs a bit tight in them, causing the second round to malfunction. I shortened the spring by one loop, and the gun went through two boxes of remington whitebox hollowpoint with no problem. I wasn't sure the flat nosed hollow point would work with this gun.

Specifically, Spencer has reported that he discussed his latest design proposal with the RCMP, and they acknowledged that if the gun which has been submitted is in accordance with his description, it could be accepted.

Until it is examined in detail, and a formal ruling is released, who knows what will happen?

Let's hope that Spencer's latest version is accepted. A favourable ruling will open the door for any number of enthusiasts.

To ressurect a very cool thread. Since there is no way in getting an sas-3 kit. Is there any way some one can give me pictures and the measurements to build an sas-3 bolt type closed bolt system. Or if they have a link to were to get drawings to build the parts.

I got the mk3 kit that stretch was selling on the EE and some pinned sten mags off claven2 in the minor hopes of being able to assemble and register a closed bolt sten.

Any help would be great.

After getting some emails from other cgn'rs seems that the sas-3 kits are all gone and that a new kit is avaliable in the states but no parts can cross the border. The only other option I can think of is to either build a closed bolt kit myself or try and build and get approval for an open bolt design, the later one I think is very hard.

As always any help is greatly appreciated.

Interesting, I got my STEN parts kit from Canada many years ago. Aside from half of the reciever now being a part of a car exhaust pipe it works just like the original.;)
