Semi-Sten: CFC AND RCMP approved and Home at Last

My wife is ex-naval reserves. Her favorite firearm of the time was the sub-machine guns (because that actually fit a smaller individual), and those were stens.

I had always promised here that if I could, I would get her one. I do not have any 12(?) paper.

You may have just made it possible for me to keep my promise to her.
Please contiue to share any info, and please keep us up to date as things progress.

greatfully yours

R

a guy in saskatwan sells the kits and he can have the mag registered for you as well..

I sent an email to ######## if this is who you mean, never got an answer to my email. I am going to contact the rc's and see what they say about building and reg'ing one today.

Weapontech there are some builds on other forums, they are mostly US stuff which is closed bolt or hammer fired designs, but that should apply up here, what got me started is I saw an ad in the EE for the mk3 sten parts kit, which has the majority of parts you need for the build, need to make the tube and the magwell as these are the reciever, the modifications to the bolt and the trigger mechanism seem to be easy, just takes time to do it right.

I have to say stencollectors thread here is one of the nicest ones, there is also one on milsurps by claven2 and navyshooter has another great thread on here. They used the closed bolt sas-3 or OI kit design, which is a much better one then open bolt, but having said that the kits for sas-3 style closde bolts have mostly dried up.

You could build the closed bolt kit but ######## got approval for an open bolt design, the way I have read tho is that the frt for his designs are only for ########s use? But depending on what you do and how you make it they may let you have the design, nothing is for sure with the tech's, what may work for one guy may not work for another.

The process to get approval is well complicated, I am just starting out gathering peices, I have talked breifly with the tech department through emails and will give them a call this week to get started on my build.

One of the neater builds was in the shotgun news, I think some time a couple years ago and that one used the fire control group out of an ar15 as the trigger and hammer, they mod'd the bolt to be hammer fired using the ar15 firing pin and spring, they have to add a long tube to the back of the bolt so that it can never be full auto.

I am by no means even close to an expert on any of this, I am just plodding my way through it like others have, to hopefully get a sten design that they will let me register.

I can send you some more info that I have gathered, mostly just what forums are out there to see other builds, pm me if you want them.

In open bolt version yes, but as it was said before, the CLOSED BOLT version has been accepted and both stencollector and navyshooter had one or more registered.

I am still waiting to build mine like the one navyshooter did his, to be sure it has even more chances to get registered. I could not get the closed bolt so I would have to get that bolt and striker machined, which would make the cost higher that I expected in the beginning. Add to this the fact that I wish to build a Sten MkIIS look-a-like so my SASMkII would have an 18.5 inched barrel covered with a FAKE silencer. The cost for an 18.5 chambered bbl is to be added to the parts kit and the bolt/striker... Just do the math and it is quickly seen that in Canada if you want an SASMkII you haave to be ready to pay what many would find prohibitive.

For myself, I'm not ready this year yet. Living in one of the most antigun provinces doesn't help me to decide and take the plunge either. "Welcome to Québec, La Belle Province"

Do you know where one would find a barrel?

Buy a barrel blank in either 9mm (.354) or even .357. There are gunsmith's in Canada who either have them in stock, or can bring them in or in one or two cases even make them. A 1-1/4 dia barrel blank could be turned in to a non-restricted length barrel quite easily on a lathe and with use of a 9mm reamer. I got the reamer from Brownell's.

do you have any parts for sale.if so what parts do you have and how much.interested in building either a dummy receivered sten, possibly a semi auto version.scrounging up parts for now.the only parts I have are a torch cut receiver and some mags.

I've still got an 18.5" section of barrel hanging around. (Not for sale!) that I have intentions to do something with someday.

I think the barrel cost me about $300, and I borrowed the reamer.

The plans are our there and it's build-able if you want it. I had to build the bolt mechanism for mine completely from scratch.

If you are going to machine the bolt and hammer from scratch, don't use the SAS system (drawings are on the 'net). This system has functioning warts. Have a look at indianapolisordnance.com. Note the different hammer setup, as well as the buffer.

I have never seen a take-off barrel from a .35 Whelen, .35 Remington, etc. Have been watching.

Watch when buying barrel blanks that you are not buying recycled UZI barrels or the like. It is difficult to cut a chamber in such a barrel. The guy listed above (if the above post remains for long) used to try and sell off UZI barrels as suitable for the semi-sten, knowing full well they were not.

The above seller has been banned from this and many other firearms forums (and gun shows) for his poor business practices, lack of ethics, grey area sales, and plain obnoxious behavior. Buyer beware.

Edited to add: As I predicted, the poster above has left the room and all traces of him once again vanished. Note this is not a reference to tiriaq.

I have been trying to see if the indianapolis ordnance bolt kits can be imported but have not got a straight answer from either importer...
group buy would be best to keep the fees down.
keep in mind if you build one of these, restricted or not, the RCMP (or a certain member) wants it sent to the lab... anybody that's a lawyer care to elaborate on how they can make such a request/demand? I was thinking of contacting the CSSA about it.
