Semi-Sten: CFC AND RCMP approved and Home at Last

man do i need a workshop... maybe i should gather the parts and take a vacation to my uncles. come home with a gun

edit: do you need a new number for registration if you were to build one with a 18.5" barrle for non restricted purposes?

Is a man without tools really a man? I can remember my early years living in an apartment....yeah you didn't work on much there. But I always had access to the workshop in the military after hours.

As long as the gun met all the other criteria as mine did, then they would simply add a -2 or whatever to the FRT number specific to the barrel length. However, if you were to use a mk3 or mkV for the basis, then it would be assigned a whole new FRT. I wasn't able to get a copy of the FRT page for mine. I'll have to wait until a new disc comes out.

thanks for the photo updates. how is your registration going with the cfc Claven2? i assumed you started the process as you started the registered bits.

No, haven't even contacted them. Until the collar is welded to the box, IMHO, both are just bits of metal.

Once the receiver tub and bolts become available and the project can truely proceed, I will then contact them. It's still premature.

(And PS: starting Friday I am out of the country for a week, so no progress will be made during that itme period ;) )

If a guy was going to CNC a magwell, he would do well to make it out of brass, then go for the Lanchester variant.
There are so many variants to make up, and so little time to do them in. Another option to the whole SAS-3 kit is to use the closed bolt sterling system in a sten tube. That is a first class system. Also, a guy could likely make the SAS-3 bolt system work in a sterling type tube. There would be another cool gun to make up (except I already have a restricted sterling :) )

I considered CNC, but the mag well is a bit tapered - would be a PITA to machine properly in a CNC mill compared to using bent sheet steel.

Don't know if anyone else here reads Home Shop Machinist, but CNC mills and lathes are now not all that uncommon, and are not all that expensive. These aren't industrial machining centres, but they are real tools.

Given the cocking handle geometry of the SAS sytem, a Mk. V would probably look the most authentic. To do a really good reproduction of a Mk. III, a rib would have to be added to the top of the receiver tube. Considering rarity, a Mk. I reproduction would be very interesting.

Well, I guess that ANY smg that can be made and registered so we can fire it, be it restricted or non-restricted is well worth giving it a try. Isn't it? :ar15:

By the way, anyone here able to make a Sten toting smily? :)

Seems an Ingram M6 semi-auto could be very easily made.

Just had a look at your link to the M-6. That is one ugly duckling. I had to read the text to make sure it wasn't a joke...the first photos looked like someone made the stocks from some 2X8.

Then again, I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Nelson's two volume set on submachine guns and machine pistols is a must read, if you are interested in this class of firearm.

I can. It's not RCMP approved.

You are most certainly welcome to try and be the first! Build a mag housing and get a new tube (since you probably don't have a non-demilled original) and send it in to the RCMP for approval/disapproval.

Let us know how you make out a year from now, maybe, if you're lucky.

Maybe I'm luckier than you think.:)

That's legally sufficient, but ugly. If you are refinishing the mag anyhow, drill a small hole, weld in a short steel pin, grind it flush so it's invisible, THEN refinish the mag :)

The MSC thread is now updated with all the Stencollector pics, including never before seen ones!

That's it for a week though, I'm off to Cuba. See y'all...
