I'm looking for new optic for two hunting rifles I'm setting up for close range
caliber will be .303 british , and .308 . One rifle does have Iron sights but I want an optic as well.

Generally the game are shot at lets say 20 yards and something like 1x red dot with a stand alone etched reticle would be decent but with my eyes kinda useless beyond 50 yards.
A 3-9x40 would be an easy road to go down but I kinda think something in a 2-7 might be better for this rifle.

so throw some ideas at me
there are some good deals on bushnell but my last one was a 3200 elite. Not a bad scope but I am unfamiliar with all this new product bushnell has.
some feedback would be appreciated.

The Bushnell Forge 2.5-15x50mm is a damn fine piece of equipment. If you're only ever going to use it at 20 yards it might be overkill, but if you enjoy some range time its definitely a nice all around scope, you just missed the rebate which sucks. Leupold also has a really nice 2-10x42mm but again in the $1200 range.

A Leupold VX-R 2-7x33 would be perfect for you. Nice glass and a sharp red-dot that you can adjust the intensity of. These are nice scopes and the red-dot activates with any motion. I have the 1-4 power version and I really like it.

Been thinking of doing the same with my No.4, have a 4-12 Nikon on it now but the last 4 deer I shot were between 20-70y. I have a 2-7x32 scope on a slug gun and it’s the perfect balance of field of view at low mag and plenty of zoom on the higher mag end. It’s a shorter more compact optic as well, further I can get it lower to the bore if I find the lowest rings I can find.

can't seem to find one of those in any stores

I saw stuff in the ee but have had bad experiences buying optics in the ee
fake eotech and the disappeared, fake leupold , damaged scopes advertised as perfect..... so it's only new product for me

For shorter range hunting, when you have to get on Target quickly, magnification is a hindrance... my favourite scope for these situations is the Leupold VX-3 1.5-5X20mm with Standard Duplex reticle. I leave them at 1.5X at all times and only turn the power up if necessary. In the past year I had two "close/fast" hunting scenarios where this scope helped to put the animal down.

1.5-5 Leupold. If you think you might ever need more magnification, 2-7.
But the 1.5-5 will do everything you need for hunting.

like my 2-7x33 from under me nose out to 300... in a weird way sometimes less mag at bit of distance (reasonable) yeilds better results.

i appreciate the 7x , sometimes though it feels not enough but im using it then in country where 3-9xs excell

Great minds think alike... I agree with ^^^ I've used, Redfield Revolution 2x7x33, a Nikon Monarch 1.5x5x20, and a Bushnell Elite 2x7x32 all to great affect. Most hunters don't need any more magnification.

I was in the butts when a shooter was firing on an IDPA style target with a light .308 hunting rifle topped with a Leupold 1.5-5. 10 consecutive hits at 600m.
I have shot service rifle back to 500m with a 1.5-5 Leupold.
At these longer distances, more magnification can certainly be used, would probably be preferable, but 5X will do the job. Magnification is important, but so is clarity. One of the things I like about the small Leupold, and similar scopes, is their compactness. I have a 1 1/4 - 6 Burris, and it has the same attributes.

.I took a Vortex Crossfire 1-4x24 scope off one of my AR,s yesterday  and put it on my Rem 760 Carbine (30.06) . It will work well on it and has the illuminated dot at the center of the reticle .The cheap baitcaster throw lever I mounted is a good improvement to the scope and for the price, warranty and overall quality its a good scope. PS. I am glad I took one of my M-305,s out hunting last year

A couple of you beat me to it, but I will add my vote to the Leup 1.5-5 x20. I have one on a Winchester 70 feather and never felt I needed any more. It’s a bright clear compact unit. Great scope.

Sad to say, but check the EE. Lots of short range scopes coming off a certain number of carbines unfortunately! I for one may end up in a situation where I'll have more optics than rifles.
