Shorten PAL Approval Times

RPAL Application
Miramichi received application April 3, 2012
online in progress April 24, 2012 - called in application was not scanned in yet
April 25, 2012 - did interview, references did interviews
April 29, 2012 - Photo still not scanned in
April 3, 2012 - photo was scanned in and sent to Alberta CFO
- Called Alberta Extension was told your application has only been put in April 3 its going to be a couple months before they get to your application cause of backlog

That just seems really odd in AB, I'd call tomorrow and ask again what's up. I was approved/issued in 30 days and by reading through this thread over the past month and a half most people in AB are in a similar time frame.

Although I know it is getting busy as a buddy signed up for the safety courses last week and the earliest he can get in is July.

I'm still waiting for my bloody card to show up in the mail though. It was approved and 'issued' last wednesday and if the info in the OP is still correct and Friday is the mailing day it should be here by tomorrow. It took my app 6 days to get to Mirimichi, so 7 days to be sent to arrive in my residential mailbox should not be unrealistic. I just want to start the transfer on my pistol and hopefully buy a nice shiny new rifle this weekend.

Thanks for the advice.

The person who interviewed me did not give me an extension number, nor did she say anything about me having my references give anyone a call. Too bad. If I had been on the ball, I would have asked for that information myself, but I was just relieved that I had at least had my interview. I'm an old fart who hasn't had a speeding or parking ticket for over 15 years. I'm as clean as a whistle. Maybe they won't bother with the reference interviews. (Yeah, I'm old, but I'm still a dreamer.)

I suppose I could give my application number to my references and ask them to call the CFC 1-800 number, but I feel like that would be asking just a bit too much of them. But as time drags on, who knows, maybe I'll decide it really isn't so much to ask.:D

Since you are applying for a RPAL your references will most likely be interviewed. From what I have read, if you want to get the license sooner than later you will have to constantly call in to move it along. If your references are not contacted within a few days, give them your application number and have them call in for interviews. I have called in once a week since it appeared online and I think it is going faster than if I waited for them to contact me.

OK, I surrender. I'll try to get them to call.

Do you think that the extension number that you were given was to a specific person who knew about your particular application, or do you think it was to the "dept" that handles interviews in general? If you think it's the dept as opposed to a single individual, would you mind giving me the extension number, if you still have it?

Thanks.

Not sure if the extension number was linked to my application since only my references used it. I was transferred for my interview when I called in at day 27. I was trying to get the interviews done and hopefully get it approved by the next day. My application has been at the CFO's office for a week and a half so far and have heard that they like to keep 'em for a week or two. Anyways, the extension number I was given is 2533, hope that helps.

Thanks very much for that number! I'll give it to my references.

If I remember right, the opportunity to punch in an extension number comes pretty early after the "Welcome to the Canadian firearms program" greeting and pressing 1 for english and 2 for French. I think a lot of listening-to-options and button-pressing is avoided if one has that extension-number shortcut.

If the person who picks up at that extension can't do their interviews, I'm pretty sure that that person will transfer them to someone who will.

I understand that once the reference interviews have be completed, here in Alberta the license application is approved and issued very shortly thereafter.

Thanks again, Ruffian.

Not a problem, good luck!

Hey all! Been lurking around for a while but just made an account.

So, did the CFSC course on April 14, mailed in PAL paperwork on the 16th, still hasn't shown up online. So thats 2 1/2 weeks, wondering if its time to give them a call...
Should not have used regular postage.

It will take 3 weeks or longer to show up online once it is received.

OTOH, now that I think about it, I should take the bull by the horn and call the CFC again and ask point-blank for a number that my references can call. That way my references will not have to explain how they (or I) obtained 2533, should that question arise.

It really depends on who you get on the other line. I was fortunate enough to deal with great people both at the CFC and the CFO's office so far. If they won't give you that info try again the next day, chances are you will be talking to a different person.

So here is my timeline

March 10 non-restrected
March 17 Restricted
March 20 sent in application with test results
April 13 application showed up online saying recieved on march 26th
April 20 called in did iterview and had references call in as well
April 23 checked online says licence has been issued
May 3 licence showed up in the mail today.

exactly 45 days.

Congrats! Damn, how'd you get your test results back that quickly? I have to wait 4-8wks. Damn it!

Unfortunately, only us Ontarians must get our test results stamped from the CFO. All other provinces receive their test results as soon as the course is completed, as it should be. I know it sucks!

Called in two days after it showed online (yesterday). Seems I missed my height and eye colour on there somehow. LoL oh well knew it was going to be something. Think I might leave it till monday to call for my interview if it's not too early. Don't think they will be ready for the interview today they said in a week. LoL

I would call in close to the 28 day mark to get interviews done if you have not been contacted yet. If you call prior to 28 days they may tell you to wait longer.

Ruffian, I just got off the phone with the CFC. I asked for an extension number for my references to call and the one she gave me was the same as yours -- 2533.

So, this cannot be mere coincidence. It is most likely the number that is given to all applicants.

Thanks again.

I just went through my recycle bin and found the piece of paper I wrote the info on and mine was ext. 2533 as well.
