Shorten PAL Approval Times

But why even hire new folks. The process should be automated. Why can't I enter my own information online? Each applicant can enter there own information and it should be accruate without data entry errors even! Each copy of course marks have a certificate number on it. I enter that number along with my information and a whole bunch of time and work saved. It goes to the CFO while my picture and witnessed "yes it's really him/her in the picture" is sent by snail mail along with any other necessary supporting doucments (if any).

I think the process needs to catch up with the digital age.

Or you could read about the implementation of the Firearms Act and understand why the process is the way it is. Or look what happened to the Harper government’s attempt to unify the payroll system with Phoenix. “Just use computers, man!”

I sure get that, but I was just comparing data processing time. 61 days to get an app entered into a system (then they start doing their thing) versus CRA doing their whole thing in less time. By gosh, the CRA would be giving me interest on a return if it took this long!

You are given an SSN at birth. The CRA has a file waiting for you when you get your first job. Before your taxes are filed each year, they already have your relevant information. The CFP has to build their files from scratch.

Sounds like your of the mind if applicants aren't 18 there's dubious reasons behind getting a PAL. I surely hope that the CFO isn't of the same mindset.

I’m sympathetic to people who are 18 because they couldn’t have applied sooner. You could have. Now you’re complaining that you haven’t been moved to the front of the line. The CFO handles files as they come in and a lot of people applied before you did.

There’s no grand conspiracy, guys. There’s just people ahead of you in line that get dealt with first.

If it's a 'may issue license', what's the reasons for that?

The government decided that certain people should not be allowed a PAL. So the CFO verifies that you are not one of those people. That can take some time.

I get budget cuts, but it's a federal system!

The CFP is a federal system. The CFOs are a provincial system.

but I see people who have done courses, applied for PAL and received it in shorter time frames.

Most of them are applying in the slow seasons. Not like the people who all apply at the same time trying to get a PAL before hunting season.

@TheOnlyRightAnswer We are just talking semantics. I'm pretty sure the RCMP has access to any/most police force data bases out there; at least in Canada, and seeing how I am Canadian since I've been born a quick lookup for my name would give them all the results, or lack their of, they need?

I applied mid August. Probably the busy season, leading into the major hunting season. I get that but I am currently approaching 120 days of waiting when they've set their own times at 45 days. So sure waiting 50 days, even 60 would seem reasonable during busy times. But at double, closing in on triple the mean process times and I call to get "we're busy", "wait 30 days" just seem ludicrous to me!
There's no reason given for the delay. If they could say oh hey you were flagged for something so we have to really scrutinize your case!

Well today is my 30 days since Miramichi received my app.
Called in and nice lady checked and said they have backed up for 5-6 weeks.
All my hopes to get my Lifense before the Boxing Day just went down to the draine.

I guess I have to get sued to it .... wait...... and wait next yers’ on sale season.

[For Ontario residents: you can send in your application before you get your stamped CFSC firearms course results back from the Ontario CFO and get the 28 day waiting period started earlier than if you wait and attach the results to the application. Questions 20(a) and (b) each have a box to check if the exam results are enclosed, so you would just leave that blank. Probably also worthwhile to include a note that exam results will follow. The 28 day clock starts once the application is received by CFC. If you wait until you get your 'stamped' safety course report(s) back you have added that to your waiting period, and it is often about 6 weeks.]
Hi Guys, is the above quote still valid?

UPDATE!:
My status finally showed up online last week(PROCESSING). When I checked today, license has been issued and should arrive within two weeks! No references were called, as far as I know.
Phoned after work and got my PAL/RPAL number.
Definitely seems to have helped that I sent my application by registered mail. My buddy sent his the day after I did(by fedex or UPS) and his only began the processing phase this week.
Not bad service. Better than I expected after reading some of the accounts here. Exactly 48 days from application being received until license issued. Should be less than 60 days by the time I have card in hand. Very pleased overall!

UPDATE: Physical license arrived in the mail today! Next waiting game will be for an ATT...
Application received CFC on October 19th. License delivered on December 12th.

181 days and I'm still waiting since application was received in Miramichi.

The randomness of times and even responses given when calling in is ridiculous. McHaggis waiting 48 days and issued license. User WW226 told there's a 5-6 week back log and has already waited 30 days.

The random times given when you call in is what gets me. After 42 days my application appears online. I called in to ask if there were any problems and told no, just waiting to scan my picture. Called a week later to check status and told “there’s 2-3 weeks of pictures to scan in a head of you, then it goes to the CFO. Call back next year”. Not sure when to expect anything now

Did you call provincial CFO?

Paperwork mailed Sept 12.
Paper work received on Sept 18th
CC charged Oct 27th
Nov 1 Applications has completed initial processing
With BC CFO as of Nov 13th 2017.
Called and asked for updates, provided the ex girlfriends phone number Nov 27th.

(unless you really did end your relationships i suggest considering the relationship as altered and leave this box unchecked. It adds significant delays)

License issued Dec 13th.

Updated and issued!

Did you call provincial CFO?

Yes called and was told been application is with a field officer 2 weeks and give it 30 days before calling back as they are backed up. I hadn't personally spoken with the CFO as I called back after two week and was again told another couple of weeks. This was about 2 weeks ago but right now just disappointed and don't care much if I get it in 2017. Best part of hunting season is over with. So I'll wait and hope in 2018 I can find some nice deals on a shotgun.

In 2016-2017 only 1% of all applications were not completed within the service standard of 45 days. The completion rates have improved over time. Some people, like yourself, are going to be part of the 1% that get delayed for whatever reason. It's the nature of any system that depends upon individual application review.

Took my restricted course on October 25th, upgrading from PAL to RPAL. Passed the course, but I have not received my stamped results from Orillia yet (ontario). My buddy took the same course I did on the same day and he hasnt gotten his back either. Does anyone know if the Ontario CFO has a backlog for stamping course reports? When I took my PAL course, I got my results back in less than a month. It's been 7 weeks, and I have not received them yet. Any advice? Appreciate it.

Tried to check online and all it gives me is “web logic server error”
Has anyone been able to log in and check today !?

Thanks
