Shorten PAL Approval Times

Happy to say on day 159 I have verbal conformation my application is approved. CFO called had a few questions for me (see below). Then called me wife, right after that called me back to say application would be approved; give it 2-3 weeks to show up in the mail.

After all this time though I'm pretty sure my application was flagged due to issues with my ex's mental health and myself being involved due to our son (in my name made the police report). Frustrating to have to wait so long due to that, but it does show the system, albeit slow, is working!

Well...I am here to report again.

After eight months of waiting and considering getting into archery I finally got a call for an interview. Took 15 minutes and the guy I spoke to was very pleasant. (much more so than the people that work for the 1800 number you are able to call)

I'm looking forward to actually getting involved in the community now and going for many deer hunts.

Keep your heads up everyone!

Can I ask what took so long, flags?

For me, yes, that is the delay, sent to AFO for further review. Technically, anxiety is a form of an emotional disorder, so I had to check that. Eventually, when I get the call, it'll be quick discussion, there's not much to anxiety- a fancy way to say worrywart ...... Anxiety is not a disorder that has any association with aggression, violence, etc, etc. It's too bad they have the question as a multi barrelled question. Much time and effort could be saved by having the potentially relevant diagnoses in the application and leave it at that. Even the potentially relevant diagnoses are more often than not a stretch.

My application just showed up online. Received on 12/20, showed up online 1/26. I called in and asked for the fax number to send my scores in. Also checked if everything else is in order, and they said all good, just need the scores sent.

Nah, I will beat you. My app received august 18 2017... On the other hand, GREAT news!! Spoke with the AFO this morning, convo was 7 minutes. Will be all set once I send in the health form. Not surprised, nor bothered by that. So, more waiting, but at least I know I am in the home stretch...however long that will be...

Lol I figured I would update this.

Its now January 12th, and the license has not arrived in the mail. So just because it says issued doesnt mean the wait is over. Hahahaha. These guys....

Of course when I call to ask, they say to wait another 2 weeks. Hehe, classic.

First license mailed dec 22nd 2017 went mia in the mail. Called jan 22nd 2018, new pal arrived in 3 business days. Legit now! Keep ur hopes up fellas and she fellas.

Called in today after sending the scores in. Was told that my application has been approved and license has been issued yesterday, both restricted and non-restricted and I should receive my license in mail in the next 5-10 business days!!! 40 days end to end! :dancingbanana:

PS: Neither of my references were called.

RPAL story in Quebec

Location: Montreal, Quebec.

So, after all the waiting, the courses, the waiting, the fees, the waiting, the application, the waiting, the correction of CFP mistakes, the waiting, the reference interview game, and more waiting, I have finally succeeded in getting my RPAL in Quebec.

Here's an abridged timeline to hopefully help others in Quebec gauge what to expect:

Oct 11 CRFSC Course.
Oct 27 Rec'd CRFSC certificate.
Nov 3 CFSC Course.
Nov 22 Rec'd CFSC Certificate.
Nov 22 Mailed RPAL Application Xpress Post.
Nov 27 Rec'd and signed for in Miramichi.
Nov 27 First initiation live fire at CTVSP with instructor.
Dec 15 Second Range trip to Ruisseau Noir as a guest.
Dec 29 Third Range Trip to CRAFM as a guest.
Jan 11 Credit Card Charged 80$, File showed up online status = "Your application has completed initial processing. It is now in progress".
Jan 12 Called the CFO to inquire if I could have my interview or references to call-in, but was told that my (Quebec) In-Person filing form was not included with my application, so they've sent me a letter requesting it. I know with 100%
certainty that I DID include it, and I still have the recepit portion of the same form in-hand.
Jan 12 Went to re-complete the In-Person filing at local police station a second time, with copies in paper and digital. Called CFP again: told that only fax was the quickest method, and even that would be 5 business days to be received.
Complied and sent the faxes. Fax machine at 1-800-411-0622 is not answering. Called CFP again and was given another fax number. Sent fax again to 1-888-449-7911 with the same result. Waited an hour, tried both fax numbers
again, both failed to receive a fax, I attempted using two different fax services for both attempts. CFP Offices now closed for weekend. ARG! Multiple fax attempts from Internet services and an analog fax machine. In total only 1
analog fax seemed to actually go through to the secondary number.
Jan 15 Called CFP to try to confirm fax status: Spoke with Beth, relayed the situation, and she gave me a third number to try: 1-888-726-1288. I sent using online service, and eventually, she did receive it! Beth promised to get it to the right
department for inclusion in my file.
Jan 17 Called CFP to inquire on status: received the fax successfully, and now assigned to CFO of Quebec.

Jan 17 Law 9 course at CRAFM: Passed Theory 100% and Practical 100%, Temporary Attestation received. Also took the CTM Range Safety course the same night prior membership.
Jan 26 It been 9 weeks (45 business days since application was signed for), so I called the CFP: "They don't know anything about how Quebec handles the approvals - just wait" :p Called the Quebec CFO: was told that the correct way to call
them was 1-800-731-4000 x7005 (other # is for police to call in only). Called the extension instead and spoke to the exact same person who just spoke to me (Eric Brossard): He verified that my application was processed and only
missing the interviews portion, and that the calls could come even today as he'll pass the message along to the department that makes the call-outs... 30 minutes later, I get a call from Francois B. to do my interview, which went
smoothly and was pleasant. He had already called my two references, reached and completed one, he left a VM for the other who is travelling at the moment. He offered a direct line if I could get ref#2 to call in, and that it would be
approved pending that. I did my best to get my 2nd ref connected to the CFO agent, but it took a couple days.
Jan 30 Online Status changed to "Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canadian Firearms Program"
Feb 6 RPAL card received in the mail from Miramichi to Montreal. The credit card is now quivering in anticipation!

So, 6 months from the day I first signed up for the first safety class to the day I have an RPAL in-hand. I've really learned alot of patience throughout the process and am very happy to finally join the ranks of the LEGAL firearms owners.
I'm off this very same night to commence the binge of purchasing *almost everything I've been drooling over for half a year.

My Alberta timeline:
I mailed my RPAL application Jan 16.
Application showed up online Feb 13, CC charged that day.
Status changed to licence issued Feb 16.
RPAL in mailbox Feb 23.
No references called, I wasn't called.
Pretty quick, one month from dropping the application in the mail to issue and 34 days to it being in my hand.
I already had a PAL that was renewed last March, so they would already have had a digital photo of me. So I reckon there was no delay for scanning.

Mailed application in in January, received Jan 25. Sent Canada Post Xpresspost Signature Required.
Processed Feb 16.
I called in on the 19th, informed that I answered the questions on having a spouse incorrectly (I don't have one). They fixed that on the phone.
The lady charged my credit card on the spot and gave me an approval number. They removed the part where I requested authority to have a prohibited firearm.

The lady didn't do a reference check or ask me any questions on the phone. She said they will be digitizing my photo now and they'll be sending it to the CFO in Alberta. Do I need my references to call or should I call the Alberta CFO now? If so what phone number do I call?

EDIT: I should mention that it's a PAL/RPAL

EDIT2:

Initial PAL/RPAL in Alberta

Jan 18 Mailed (Xpresspost Signature Required)
Jan 25 Received
Feb 16 Processed
Feb 19 Called in and fixed a mistake on my application. Lady told me it was sent to the CFO in Alberta for Processing after photo digitizing. Did not have a personal interview.
Feb 23 Website says license has been issued

29 days from application being received to being approved. No references called.

My ongoing saga.

AFO received my doctor's note last week, today he called my spouse...He is being very thorough..... BTW, the doctor's note was for a simple issue-anxiety....

Application went in August 18 2017....

In case that info helps anyone who also has a "box" checked to get an idea of how much longer it takes. He also seemed to suggest that we will be speaking again.... I guess in today's environment you cannot be overly critical of this..
