Shorten PAL Approval Times

So I'm curious, on the PAL application in 2014 it had a section for charges, mental health, etc and they only wanted you to note it if it was within 5 years but now that has changed and there is no longer a 5 year limit. I was wondering, if a guy was "arrested" under the mental health act for depression episode and then let go a couple hours later after being deemed safe to go home, is that something they will see when processing an application several years (5+) after that event?

I remember that because I wanted to apply back then. It used to say:
"16.d) During the past(5) years, have you threatened or attempted suicide, or have you suffered from or been diagnosed or treated by a medical practitioner for: depression; alcohol, drug or substance abuse; behavioural problems; or emotional problems?"

Now it says:
"Have you ever threatened or attempted suicide, or have you ever suffered from or been diagnosed or treated by a medical
practitioner for: depression; alcohol, drug or substance abuse; behavioural problems; or emotional problems? "

Anything that involves the police would have to be declared as YES when asked about mental health. Because they would write something on your judicial record.

I had depression 10 years ago, but it only involved with my doctor and not the police. Since medical records are confidential by law, I answered NO to this question because if I say YES to this question, they'll ask for my doctor's note and knowing the new post-Covid red flag laws, a doctor could always go against patient confidence law and report you if your mood changes slightly.

I also applied online and had my application approved immediately after the 28 day waiting period

- Feb 5th 2023: submitted online
- Mar 5th 2023: initial assessment complete
- Mar 6th 2023: approved and license issued
- Mar 14th 2023: license received in mail

Gather signatures online is just entering your reference's emails in the online application, they'll get an email with instructions to login with GC key/banking and they'll have a disclaimer to read. Then they just enter their name and submit.

I'm from Quebec too and I submitted my application online.

Here's my timeline:
- 2023.5.5: Finished completing the application on my side.
- 2023.5.10: Both references signed/approved my application using bank login. An hour later, I received an email stating "all of required signatures were received and my application was submitted for processing".

Did you or any of your references get any calls or phone interviews?

Edit: I'm applying for RPAL by the way.

When they say 'initial assessment has been completed' what does that mean exactly? That was my status almost immediately after submitting online. does this mean they have looked at it or is this just a general canned message as soon as they receive it?

I also would liketo know, since mine was also almost immediate as well.

Before the online system, there was a delay between the time received when they charged your card and when there was an "initial assessment".

Are you in the same boat? I’m on day 69 since application was submitted. When did you submit it?

I phoned the living crap out of them, I would mark date and times down. if they said it would be 5 days to the next step I would phone on point and check in. Do not allow them to put it at the bottom of the pile, they are obligated to help you.

Any timelines for Alberta online applications, I'm about to take my course and I thought it would be fast, but reading this thread has made me realize that Im in for a ride, probably 2 months and 6 at the most, would that be accurate?

I would say 2 is rare 6 - 12 is probably more realistic.

Thanks for the reply, I was very excited to get my course done and never really stopped to think in research the timeline for actual application, I better sit tight and brace for a waiting time as fun as watching paint dry.

Look at my reply on the other thread. Alberta, online application. Card issued in 28 days.

It sure looks like its different for many people.

My application took about 2 months, my references are also PAL certified, not sure if that made a difference or not.

Alberta's CFO really has her #### together, my application was received Feb 5, cars issued March 8, got it on the mail March 14th.
