Shorten PAL Approval Times

I contacted the CFO who had my application yesterday and left a message, this morning I got a call from her and my application is approved! So in total it will have been 14 weeks from when my application was received, to when I will have it in my hands. The lesson being if the CFO has it, dont wait, call them!

Just phoned and talked to the CFO. It is in the printing preparation stage so it should be printed tomorrow. It has been approved though.

Timeline
Received: February 17
Appeared online: March 2nd, give or take a couple days
March 12: Did my interview
March 13: Both references called in
March 15: Approved.

Edit: My status has changed to "your license has been issued". Now the hard part is over.

How the heck did this happen?

Me: Mailed RPAL application Jan 30/12
Rec'd Feb 3/12
Visa charged Feb 20
Did interview and references called Feb 28/12
" Your application has completed initial processing. It is now in progress. Please check the status again at a later date"
Called CFC today March 15/12, was told,"Application was with CFO for final review. Call again monday (March 19) and ask for status".

My girlfriends RPAL application was received at CFC office 3 days after mine, did her interviews just yesterday. She asked the lady doing her interview how long it would take because it was her birthday on sunday and the lady said, "We will see what we can do". Her status changed immediately on CFC site to, "License has been approved, blah blah blah."

Why the heck does she get hers approved so quickly and my interviews were done 2+ weeks before hers and I am still getting "Check with us later"? So frustrating. Makes me think the ladies are getting some kind of favourtism maybe? I don't know :(
We are both in BC. Anyone have any insight?

just call the CFO and ask. if your 28 day period is up im sure they will approve it, thats what happened with mine

I contacted Ontario CFO and the supervisor who has my file told me the reason for my delay was because I have a fairly common name in the criminal record system. There are a couple of dudes with the exact name as me, and they have criminal records longer than ever, so the CFO is methodically checking every single entry, crosschecking, etc. to ensure that I'm the clean one. Sucks to have my name right now but I'd rather them check that well on the off-chance of putting a gun in the hands of a real bad ass!

The supervisor told me it would be at least another 3 weeks before they would know if I was clear.

If you have ever called the police for any reason, or have had the police called on you (neighbor disputes, domestics, traffic reporting etc.) they check, cross check, and validate (or invalidate) each and every single occurrance.

Like everything else in life, it depends on who you get on the other end, and how quickly they work, whether they call in sick, or come in late, or generally would just rather be anywhere else but work. It also depends on how common your name is, and whether anyone else who shares your name has a criminal past or not...all files are different.

If you are upset about yours, here's mine: CFO has been final-reviewing my file for 45 days now...

Application Received on: 2011/12/02

Current Status: Your application has completed initial processing. It is now in progress. Please check the status again at a later date.

Trust me when I say this, on the 28th day, you will be checking every hour or two just to know it is approved.

I searched my name on FB and got 600 results

How far back do they go?

I can't believe the horror stories I've heard on this thread. My PAL/RPAL was issued exactly 28 days after the CFC received it. I called occasionally and I did get a phone call from the Manitoban CFO during final examination. Best thing to do is be patient and not worry too much about it guys, it will come.

So, if I get my references to call in, is there anything besides my file number that they need to know?

Will they be quizzed on spelling my name or my birthday or anything stupid like that?

No name spelling or birthday - they do not expect you to know that type of thing. They will ask how long they have known you and all of the same questions that were asked on the application form. Some others include,
Does he watch a lot of violent movies?, Does he have a bad temper?, Have you seen him ever get violent?, that sort of thing.

Occasionally they will ask some outrages questions like, "Has he ever expressed to you thoughts of assinating children in the school yard?" A few forum member's references have been asked that one in the past.

Good luck, it shouldn't be too much longer before you have your card.

They received my application on February 06. I was interviewed last week, but you see, I wanted to be blunt and honnest and told them about a professional burn -out (not a depression ) I did in 2008. Now I have to wait for my doctor to get back from vacation, get an appointment and get him to sign me a note confirming that I am NOT a nutcase !! so back in tha waiting line !! I ' ve owned firearms since 1986 and always been a law abiding & safety oriented gun owner !

Be honnest they say !
