Shotgun sub sections? (mods?)

So do you advocate eliminating the separate rifle sub-forums too? Maybe we should have just three sub-forums: handguns, rifles and shotguns? ;)

I think that there is enough diversity amongst shotgun enthusiasts to warrant specialty sub-forums. There is really nothing Fudd-ish about it when you think about it... Tactical shotguns are completely different beasts than high end O/U skeet & trap guns tend to attract different folks... Just like separating black & green guns from hunting & sporting guns, etc. Not a big deal, it just makes it easier to find what you are looking for.

I like the idea of splitting them up, but for the same reason that we split up the rifles; because there are different types, not because I am an elitist and want to get rid of all the short black gun threads. In fact, I'm sure I'd find myself in the black shotgun threads more than the "finer" guns.

I concur with the rationalization.....

Admittedly, too many forums/sub forums makes it difficult indeed to administer/moderate etc. However, it would be a good idea to have just a couple on Shotguns.

I shoot guns like this that cost as much as some decent cars both on birds and clays:

And then there are shotguns that I use exclusively now on waterfowl and backup on pheasant hunts:

Completly uncleaned after some 27K rounds, even in the rain! Thank God for Break Free!

I also have the Nova, 9 shot pump that Tom Knapp uses when he is in Canada for his demos. And, I shoot a Cleaborough & Johnson London SxS for SxS events and some hunts over my dogs. I have nearly 100 firearms from PPK/s to RPK, M4/M16 and AR180 besides a good number of pistols, rifles and shotguns.

I agree with splitting the shotgun section into sub sections for the same reason there are rifle subsections. If we want to talk about a shotgun for birds or clays, we do not need to talk about a possible bear or self defene situation in the same forum ( a very rare occurance)! One only needs to look at the other shotgun forums out of the US or UK!

The present Shotgun section sucks!!!!!!!! From what I gather from my contacts in the industry, there are many more hunting and clay guns sold than shorties, assault types and single shots, by a very BIG margin. If you don't beleive me, ask for a report from Stats Canada!

Henry;)

Now this is exactly what I am talking about. Only someone of seriously limited experience and a closed mind would consider only guns under $2,000 worthy of taking into the field.

He needs our help. I don't believe he is beyond redemption, simply lacking in experience and exposure to the qualities that come with a fine shotgun. We can either dismiss or insult him to our detriment or we can guide and nuture him.

Let us, if presented with the chance, give him the opportunity to shoot a gun worth over $2,000. Admittedly he may never be able to afford it but he might be able to appreciate what a fine gun is. Let us see the smile, the sparkle in his eyes only to be followed by the realization that such a gun is and will forever be beyond his means. He then can live the rest of his life in resentful envy of those of us who can. :)

OK. Now that the cheekyness is all out of my system...I can see the sense in splitting shotguns into 3 categories.

Black: All things good and great about ye all mighty boomstick.
Fine: Historical, and modern where materials and workmanship matters, and shooting them doesn't.
Sporting: Includes clay games & hunting as one is off season practice for the other.

I love my sporting guns, but am still looking for the right door knocker try out. AND I want all you black shotgun shooters to come break some sporting clays with me, I would love to smack some milk jugs with buck or bigger shot with you.

I'm a Fudd, does that make me Fuddtastic?

I'm for sub forums. Mall ninja crap is fine, but 'tactical' shotgun threads out number real world stuff by what, 10-1 in here? It'd be nice to not have to scroll through twenty pages of 'shotties' wearing flashlights and bi-pods.

Now somthing from our Fudd sponsers:

When I first started reading this thread I thought it was a silly idea, but the more I think about it, the more I have to agree with splitting it out... Rifles are not all lumped into one forum; they are broken out into sporting, black rifles, red rifles, and milsurp. Maybe it is time for the same approach to be taken for shotguns...
Agreed.

This drives me nuts.

Fine: Historical, and modern where materials and workmanship matters, and shooting them doesn't.

Yes, well, that's the sort of blinkered, philistine pig ignorance I've come to expect from you non-creative garbage. You sit there on your loathsome, spotty behind squeezing blackheads, not caring a tinker's cuss for the struggling artist. You excrement! You whining, hypocritical toady, with your colour TV sets and your Tony Jacklin golf clubs and your bleeding Masonic secret handshakes!

The whole, entire point is that shooting fine guns DOES matter. It matters in the same way that watching a 60 inch, 1080i flatscreen TV is a more rewarding experience than watching a 9 inch B&W tube, or driving a Corvette is a more enjoyable experience than driving a Chevette, or playing a Martin guitar is more satisfying than playing a London Drugs Special.

A fine gun is much more than fancy walnut and artistic engraving. It is the result of a lifetime of learning the finer points of balance and handling, barrel manufacturing, jointing and bolting and numerous other aspects of the art. Only when the design of the gun is fundamentally sound and its construction accomplished with a high degree of skill does it merit the adornment of better walnut and finish. No gunmaker ever made his finest effort hoping it would sit in the safe. No owners of such instruments (that I have ever met) like to leave their gun at home. Watch out, they usually shoot them well.

As for splitting up the shotgun forum, I don't really care. While it might be easier to locate info of interest from time to time, I read all the threads anyway. A pistol gripped 870 might not be a "Fine" gun in the way that Drvrage defined it, but it is still interesting.

Is the shotgun forum SOOO busy that it NEEDS a split? I don't really think so.

it's funny, I have been carrying short "defender" style shotguns for over 20 years when I go into the bush on a non hunting trip (accounted for many grouse, those nasty pumps, too!) but I like nice shotguns with wood and all that the best.

Give me a stainless/synthetic bolt action over a wood and blued one anyday, but I like to hunt grouse with double barreled 20 guage, with a wood stock.

However...I always hit better on clays or trap with my POS Chinese rip off 870 shotgun with a 26" barrel ( about $400, all in) than I ever have with shotguns that I paid $2000-$3000 for..

So- Split the forum? Why bother? They are all shotguns.

It makes sense to split the shotgun forum into 2 sections only IMHO.

Hunting and Sporting Shotguns
Defense and Tactical Shotguns

I happen to like BOTH types of shotguns...:yingyang:

The term "fudd" is beyond annoying and pretty phucking rude as well

That really does not matter.

As a matter of fact many of you just embarassed gun ownership.

In fact there should be adequate grounds for consideration when numerous members have voiced a common opinion pertinent to the original topic.

Besides, a move in that direction will likely eradicate most if not all the for/against nonsense posts that we all get bogged into... :).

Obviously, we all need to recognize that internal bickering, in terms of whose interest is superior or inferior, is not just plain immature but defeats the sense of unity that we so urgently need to comprehend.
