Show off your slug gun with rifled barrel!

An 870 Remington Express 20 gauge trio

I use them for deer, turkey, uplands game and pests around the farm. They're nothing spectacular, in my opinion, however, these are one of the most affordable, versatile and reliable shotguns available. Each of these as pictured is sighted for deer at 100 yards and capable of very good accuracy out to that range using Federal Premium Trophy Copper 275 grain sabot slugs in both 2 3/4 and 3 inch sizes.

Top one: A cinnamon hardwood, laminate stock and a Mesa 6 shell holder. I shortened the fore-stock to accommodate the Mesa shell holder. It sports an 18.5" rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount. The scope is a Leupold VX2 1-4x20 with Alumina caps. I also have three other barrels for it; a 20" smooth bore with a fixed improved cylinder choke and rifle sights, a 21" vented rib with Rem Chokes and a 28" vented rib with Rem Chokes. This one has seen a lot of carry time hunting, on walkabouts and on the quad. In its various configurations I have taken a lot of uplands game as well as pests on the farm with this one. I find that the 20" smooth bore barrel with the sights is the most versatile, allowing shot, buckshot (I use 2 Buck) or Foster type slugs to be used. That smooth bore barrel is what is on it most of the time. The Mesa shell holder does make it a little awkward to carry comfortably in hand but allows me to carry different shells and have fast, easy access to them.

Middle one: A synthetic camo stocked Express. It is sporting a 21" rifled barrel with sights and a saddle scope mount. The scope is a Leupold Ultimate Slam 2-7x33 with Alumina caps. I also have 2 other barrels for it; a 20" smooth bore with Rem Chokes and rifle sights and a 26" vented rib with Rem Chokes. If you're not careful those saddle scope mounts want to bite your trigger finger just above the second knuckle. With the 21" barrel this one accounted for 3 turkeys in 2018. This is a nice, light carrying shotgun. It's the one that gets to go out when the weather is really wet.

Bottom one: A cinnamon hardwood, laminate stock. It is sporting a 21" rifled barrel with sights. It has been drilled and tapped and has a Weaver scope base mounted. The scope is a Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 200 DOA 1.75-5x32. The fabric/elastic shell holder on the butt stock is for 12g shells but holds the 20's just fine. This is my dedicated turkey gun and also sees duty during deer season, that's why I decided to D&T it. For turkey it has a 21" barrel with Rem Chokes. I've had to make a lot of turkey stuffing and venison burgers and cutlets because of this SG.

Thanks. It feels better, has greatly increased the weight (which I prefer) and with aluminum block and bedding im hoping it will shoot. I plan to put a post with the build up in a bit.

Ive been looking for a Ithaca 37 rifled barrel for years...even put my Mossberg 500, with a rifled barrel and mod barrel up on the EE for trade...just for a rifled barrel. Been up for months..never had anyone pm me...must be hard to find!...But I will get one one day LOL.

picked up a new one today from the post office. my 12 year old daughter past her hunter ed and CFSC this past weekend and i told her i'd get her her own slug gun for the up coming deer season. bought her first outdoors card yesterday and waiting for the application forms for her own minors permit. told her if she enjoys going and does well in school, i would fit it to a pink boyd's laminate thumbhole for her. leupold freedom 3-9×40 is on order for it as well. now to start working her up from her cricket 22 to this savage 220 ..........

Good choice .... but I am trying to imagine myself when I was 12 years old ... and shooting that thing ... and all that comes to mind is "Ouchhhhh!" .... !!

Just wondering, have you found some low recoil ammo for that gun?

picked up a few boxes of hornady custom light 20g slugs. hope they group well??? LOL

she'll be able to handle it. i'll start her off with my leadsled for a bit first and one of my muzzleloaders with a reduced load of blackhorn 209 and work up a bit before the we try the savage. she can use my caldwell field pod when we go out in the blind hunting

what are you guys with savage 220's and and scope rails using for rings?
i'm going to get burris zee rings but not sure if low 1" rings will work? i'd like to keep the scope low for her and use low rings if possible. if not, i'll get a set of med 1" for the leupold freedom 3x9-40 and put a cheek riser if needed.

Here is my little (unethical) trick ... I normally order the low and medium from Amazon .... and the ones that fit I keep ... and the other set I return ...

Call Precision Optics. Tell them the details and they will set you up with the right rings the first time. They usually have the best price with shipping as well.

That gun is bigger than my 12 year old daughter. Wow I hope she's been shooting 12s for a while!

Mossberg 500 with Tasco red Dot on a rifled slug barrel.

Don't need a better scope for the bush I usually hunt in. I'd be lucky to get more than a 50yd shot max.
