Showoff your SHORTY 12G SHOTTY (14" or under and Mods)!

Remington wingmaster. Parkerized, dlask 12.5" barrel, s&j hard wear oversized safety, s&j hard wear no jam follower, s&j extra power mag spring, polished chamber and mag tube... And I recently switched to a synthetic stock set. I prefer the look of the wood but the synthetic holds up far better.

good looking shottie.....I always like the traditional old school look of wood furniture . Is that bear spray in your pack by any chance ?

Thanks.
Yes, that's bear spray... I carry spray, bangers, air horn and a gun. I'm the "bear guy" and it's a lot easy to explain that you used spray or a horn than to discharge a firearm at work.

I edited my first post in this thread with a second picture.
Cheers.

Hmmmm... Old wood stock has a longer & thicker pistol grip section on my 14" 590A1 and shaves off a good inch of LOP. Might strip it and paint/stain it black. I have other stocks coming to try but I'm impressed with the feel of the old wood stock. Of course, options are limited to the short action bar forend unless I can find a short wood set, if anyone has a short wood forend and set made for the 6.5-6.75" action bars, PM me with pics. I have a WTB ad in the EE.

Below is my 18.5" Road Blocker with stock brake and Hogue overmolded forend/PG.

  • DA Grizzly 12.5"
  • Acquired the stock and fore-end from for cheap off the EE, originally from an 80's era 870 security express. The wood was in horrible shape so I stripped it, re-did the fore-end grip lines, worked in a Tung Oil finish which enhanced the bruising on the wood to give it a neat, aged look.
  • Grind to fit natural rubber butt pad.
  • Leather shell holder and sling from a dealer who was in the Ukraine at the time I bought it. The same dealer, same address, is now in "Russia".
  • The leather shell holder is quite nice, and includes a padded suede cheek rest.
  • XS Sights Big Dot Tritium front sight. This raised the dot to fix the point of aim v. point of impact issues with a bead right on the barrel. The dot is also really visible in all lighting conditions (from bright sun to pitch black, huzzah for tritium), which makes it easy to pick up and aim.

Overall, handy little bush gun, and surprisingly comfortable to shoot with the improved butt pad and cheek rest.

Mossberg 590a1 14" cylinder bore. Hogue stock (short LOP) came in today. Just missing my VCS follower from Tacord. Sling is BFG 221 padded with homemade slip on CR123 battery holder. Sling hardware is GG&G QD attachment. Forend is Surefire 621LM.

Thanks. Yes, it's the velcro. S&J Hardware to be exact. Forgot to add that. Just checked the mailbox and the VCS follower came in today. Complete, at least for now lol.

Just arrived today, thoroughly impressed! The A1 is so much beefier than the 500/88. LOP is too long for me and we'll see if the bead is tall enough. I suspect it'll be fine with buckshot and a little short for slugs but ya never know.

LOP is waaaay too long for a short barrel. Had my wood stock on it (1" shorter) and it's still too long, in my opinion. Hogue 12" on the way.

I had a 12" Hogue on a 12.5" Grizz and I just couldn't get comfortable behind it. I hated shooting it. I tried everything I could but it beat my cheek like I owed it money. Several range trips trying every tip I could dig up left me annoyed with it. I switched to Magpul and was very happy with the SGA. Hopefully you have a better experience with the Hogue. As a side note I had to grind a little off the shell interuptor to get reliable feeding. Needs a range trip but it seems to be feeding right.

P.S. does anyone know if the Mossberg SGA reduces the reach to the trigger?

I heard it's shorter LOP with no spacers installed. Didn't get reliable feeding with stock setup or aftermarket???

Mine fed fine:

Hogue should sell spacers with their short stock so it can be tuned a bit....I find them ok with a slip on recoil pad to add a little length and padding.

The Magpul looks nice and shouldn't exasperate the long trigger reach but at the end of the day Mossberg's just have a slightly longer trigger reach.
It's a design quirk, due to the action release location would be my guess.

I have a Choate PGS, ATI Talon and Hogue 12" coming. Also willing to chop my wood stocks, so I'll find what I like and put the rest on my 500's or throw them on the EE.

I find the 590 SGA grip hold more comfortable than the 870 SGA.
There is a slight difference in the slope of each grip. Minor, but significant enough when using each guns differing control locations and trigger reach.

Aimpro Tactical has, or had, a 13" LOP version of the Hogue that was made exclusively for them, if they're still available it might be worth looking into.

Have you noticed much difference in the reach to the trigger? With the factory plastic Mossberg stocks it will strain my hand after a few hours of shooting. F**k that makes me sound like a pussy! Pistol grip stocks fix that issue but make the slide release and tang safety more difficult. They're great on Mavericks but not what I want. The SGA for the 870 was a full win for me, I couldn't find one fault with it. I think I'll try the Mossberg SGA and see how it goes. I'm still thrilled to have the shotgun I've dreamed of for years!
