Any leads on who is selling brass shells? I remember seeing some for sale quite some time ago and was thinking about buying some recently.

Never mind that making powder or finding flints isn't always easy. The thing is that making and finding those things IS possible where making shot hulls or 209 primers is clearly not practical once the old ones are used up.

If somebody asks preppie questions in an antique forum then they have to accept what reply they get. If they want to get preppie answers they should post in the preppie forums. :)

I forget who the dealer was here for ballistic products also if you got to princess auto the have a set of punches that cut nice wads for 12ga brass the 3/4" works well as it makes about a 11ga wad

and remember to clean our brass hulls with water after they are fired with BP(cant use anything but black powder in magtech hulls)

that should say cant but my computer has been messing me up by deleting whole sentences and making me type in the middle of sentences. anyway magtech hulls are balloon head brass and cant be used with anything but BP or you risk blowing through the case head

Dixie Gun Works has a little hand-powered thingamus for making your own percussion caps.

Might have to kill a city hunter and take his beer can, though.

Quarter-pound of potassium chlorate and some glass dust will make you percussion caps for a lifetime.


BTW, guys, Payne-Galway's book also discusses cocking mechanisms quite thoroughly: Goat's-foot Lever, Crannequin and Windlass.

You would need one of the latter two for a 300-pound crossbow...... but it WILL do the job!

There is some really NEAT stuff in old books!
 
Hunting in a SHTF situation ?

Are you planning on packing your refrigerator ? Otherwise you will have to kill something every 4 or 5 days. Even the best hunters I know would not be able to sustain this level of hunting on local big game.

Learning to dig for grubs is a better survival strategy than hunting.

An even easier solution is to buy a cheap break action shotgun. Save up some of the thousands of empty shotgun hulls laying all over the ground at the end of country roads. Then buy a comfortable number of 209 shotgun primers to last you until whenever. Cut off the hulls where the plastic meets the metal and then tap in a new shotgun primer into a few of the "adapters". Then you load the improvised 209 adapter at the breech and then muzzle load like you would with any other black powder shotgun.

Unless you build a nitre bed, the absence of sources of potassium nitrate will be your undoing in the making of black powder.

I love my bp guns, but my "end of days" survival gun is likely to be a .22 rimfire for obvious reasons.

Not to mention finding active volcanoes to climb get some sulfur.

It tales a certain level of technology to make black powder. Even more to make a powder effective and consistent enough for use in in firearms.

True. Although Fort MacMurray has tons of the stuff in open storage. which would be a bit more available than the nearest volcano.
 
potassium nitrate can be made from decomposed plant or animal matter and willow charcoal is your best bet you can make a sulfurless BP that will work well if set off the a percussion cap or primer. remember this idea if for hunting to conserve ammo for protection for other guns .22lr and a single shot 12ga(with brass hulls) are among the best SHTF guns to have stock up on .22lr and large pistol primers safe other ammo for defense. also paper roll caps and strike anywhere matches are something to have I say get a copy of the improvised munitions handbook plenty of info in there.

buy as much BP as you can now too even if its pyrodex for the single shot shotgun it dose not matter and you can get away with light charge of BP and and a lighter charge of shot to conserve powder and shot or for a slug a .600 round ball on a donut wad and a light charge of BP

There are those modern manufacture sidelock traditional style muzzleloaders that have that "drum modification" to accept a flintlock or a percussion cap lock.
In theory this sounds ideal.

Anyone have any first hand knowledge about these?

Hey brother. A bit off topic but I did get to witness the Karelian Bear Dogs and thier handler hard at work the other evening at about 40 yards distance.

From safely behind the perimeter fence, I seen the handler & two brave puppies chase a big male bb.
Lots of growling and barking as the angry bear turned on his pursuers briefly. The bear rose up on his hind legs with barred teeth, neck hair raised upwards and extended his front legs and claws at the dogs upon first encounter. Then the trio went speeding over the small rise through the scattered pine trees with the handler close behind.
Then, the bear aversion specialist then reappeared back over the rise (with cartoon-like light speed) until his dogs got the black bear's attention once again.
About 2-3 minutes later his backup arrived. Lethal force cover, but not required.

An interesting night indeed! ;)
