SHTF Rifle - Ideas

It's a scenario worth analyzing. I'll have to think about it and read that website. I would definitely not stick around if there's gun fire on the streets.

Seen your other post before it got vaporized by C77, your circle of wagons theory only holds true in an urban environment. Some of us live on a farm, ranch, or reside in some other rural place where it would make more sense to hold down the fort so to speak and try to weather the storm as best you can. If you stay stationary you are able to prep alot further into the future, vs bugging out is only what ever you can carry for supplies.

If you did #1, #2 would always be on the table as an option if #1 wasn't going to work out in the long run.

One more post about killing the neighbors to steal their supplies or chucking molotov cocktails at people and this will be locked.

Dude your like the ultimate fun police -- its a hypothetical discussion. My local Sheriff and SWAT LT (not my Police Chief, or dept) have hypothetical discussions about this stuff all the time.

Shooting your neighbor is a crime *unless it meets the criteria of self defense as applicable to state and federal laws. Discussions about what to do if something happened is not a crime unless it gets into conspiracy.

Looking for everyone's opinion on a Canadian bug out rifle.

I'm thinking something non-restricted, chambered for .223/5.56, and using STANAG magazines.

Reliability and weight will probably be chief concerns.

Well living in Vancouver, a catastrophic earthquake is not a fantasy scenario, or day dreaming wannabes. Stocking up is a very real and important goal here. Defending what you stocked up is also pretty damn important. So a lot of people laugh at these posts, but living surrounded by near impassable mountains and bridges sure makes you wonder how well the federal rescue response would reach us in the first couple of weeks.

I'm not saying I'm digging my fallout shelter because the North Koreans have an armada trying to invade us, I'm saying being prepared and intelligent and knowing the real natural dangers about where you live sounds like common sense to me. Having some first aid supplies, canned foods, some good sleeping bags, some real thick wool sweaters, a flashlight that works, a good (non-chinese crap) knife, food and water for a couple of weeks and a means to defend this stuff sounds like common sense to me.

I lived through the ice storm in Montreal, my dad had a wood burning fireplace and a propane fireplace in the basement of our house, we had 3 other neighboring families and their kids stay in our house for 3 weeks during that time. It was an eye opener for me. It was either that or the shelters for them because they only had electric furnaces in their houses. In Quebec it gets pretty frigging cold in the winter.

Six years later when I was working at city hall in Montreal, the chief firemen would tell me the stories of those shelters and it wasn't pretty. People pissing and defecating in the halls, the stench, vomit everywhere. I'm amazed there wasn't a typhus epidemic, maybe it was borderline... The 22nd and the 12th and the local cf reserves from Montreal did what they could but frankly there just wasn't enough beds and tents for everyone.

that being said, this reminds me that I need to clean my tavor tonight.

The US DHS bought 1.6 billion rounds of 5.56x45 because they know they are going to be fighting their own civilian population as soon as they try to take away their guns and start throwing people in the FEMA camps. They are on their way to civil war and when that happens we will be drug into the same situation.
Don't believe what you see on the evening news, the government is not here to serve us or protect us, we are their slaves and things are going to change drastically. This is happening around us right now. High River? A test to see what they can get away with.

Sh!t, this tinfoil hat is too tight.... There that's better.

Be prepared to survive without running water, power, heat in your home, gas for your car, or a Safeway down the road. Have a plan to get out of the cities and a place to go before the sheeple get desperate.
Your going to need more than a cheap rifle and a couple hundred rounds of ammo.

The real news is out there if you look for it.
The good news is that it should happen south of the border first and that we should get a little warning but don't wait till the crisis is on your front lawn to start preparing.

Holy moly! you hang out in some dark corners of the internet!

edit: not that I disapprove.

Talking about killing your neighbours to steal their supplies is not self defence and is just not happening here.

The XCR looks like a great option. Only problem with it and the AR-180B are the price tags.
I'm thinking of a price cap somewhere around $1200 without optics or other high-end accessories.
I know that leaves options like the T-97, a CZ/VZ (whichever model is chambered for .223), or the SU-16.

XCR is heavy as hell with its NR profile. I'm also looking to replace it for a SHTF ... even though a real scenario most likely will involve my AR - I think many of us want that Black 223/556 (an cough 22lr) unicorn refile in NR for SHTF or whatever.

Like I said 2 weeks is the bare minimum recommended to pull through a natural disaster. Everyone has a different mental picture of what SHTF will look like, whether its civil unrest, natural disasters, collapsed infrastructure or a retarded fantasy where youre fighting off Zombies in full MOLLE gear. A lot of people have grand ideas for SHTF, and like to picture themselves as one of the Wolverines from Red Dawn fighting off invading forces. The most likely scenarios I can think of are either a natural disaster where you may be on your own for 2-4 weeks or more, or a collapsed economy. Hunting? Sure, but unless thats how you survive now youre going to starve, being a weekend hunter is not going to cut it. The bulk of your food and supplies will come from scrounging which means your firearm is more for self defense.

Because that was the question, if you want to haul around your entire firearms collection i hope you have a strong back and "6 months" supply of robaxacet.

I don't plan to hump all that sh!t around with me if I have to leave my home, what I'm saying is that until I have to leave my home I want to have options and the ability to stay there without support in the means of groceries or electricity until forced to flee. If things ever do get that bad I plan to be ready to survive as long as possible. I have no intentions of looking for trouble or raiding my neighbors homes but I want to be ready for whatever happens.
I have no intentions of fighting the police or army if they come, I will hand over what they came for and then go grab my hidden rifle and disappear.

what if they come for your "hidden rifle" as well?

Steyr Scout. Beware of the man with one gun they say, a scout is a bloody competent rifle in a seriously capable cartridge.

Then they can take it and I'll go to my other hidden rifle.
I'm not fighting armed forces or police just to keep a rifle. That's what I meant earlier about having options and not just one SHTF rifle.

Was that your Barrett 50 cal that I stumbled across yesterday? Sounds like you have guns hidden everywhere dude.

if they come for one hidden rifle they obviously know about them all and will come to take them all or they will just take you away instead

Few, obviously not too popular these days ideas for your consideration.
Your rifle should be fairly short, light (around 6 lbs) and ammo efficient (bolt action).
Your ammo supply will be limited and probably you'll be walking around with your rifle and ammo at the same time.
You'll be carrying far more stuff than you want, so weight of the rifle is very important too.
It should be good for hunting and self defense at the same time (.308), but you won't be running any battles - it's just not real.
It should be as simple as possible as you may not have resources to keep it running as clean as you think by now.
For such scenarios I would pick up a Steyr Scout rifle.
