If I had to choose I'd rather have horsepower than efficiency. 300 Win Mag for life. Unless I get a 300 RUM. Or 300 Norma. I wonder if I could push a 225gr to 3000 fps with the Norma?
Since we are discussing efficiency these days, the reasonable 300 Magnums.

Actually, the 300 WSM is the ballistic twin of the 300 H&H.
H&H factory loads are still kept quite moderate. Handloads, however, at modern pressures see the H&H not run, but somewhat walk away from the WSM.
As you have posted, the Norma is crazy expensive in factory ammo. I agree 100% that the 300 Win is the way to go if you are buying factory.

I have a 300 wm. I like it but to be honest id prefer a 3006.
Im one of those who prefer raw horsepower over efficiency. Even if its not needed its nice to know its there.
Kinda wish the 300rcm had caught on. I was interested in it and its 338 brother but lack of support kept me away

How must faster that 3000fps should one expect with an H&H? All the manuals I have just barely touch 3K with some loads less.
Looks like IMR4350 is the first powder I should try. What say you? Resized some 375 brass as per your instruction. It worked perfectly.
John Barsness has written in several different articles about the 300 H&H being somewhat under-loaded by the factories, and in particular that 4350 is NOT a good powder to use in it. It is basically an extra-long 300 WSM.
There is no trick at all to get 180s past 3000 with Re 22 or WW760 with excellent accuracy and case life, especially in resized Winchester 375 H&H brass. Glad you tried that. It has worked for me for years.

I've never had a 300 H&H, or a 300WSM although I do a bit of reloading for the custom 300WSM my Son In Law has. In an early production Winchester model 70, and,a WBY-X Blaze S2 Vanguard I purchased from a gentleman on site, both in 300WM plus in a Schultz & Larsen M-65DL in 308NM, 4350 has been my powder choice/preference over a few others I've 'tried'.
I like the RCM too. It's in a good place between the 30-06 ballistics and less whallop than the WSM, wm, etc
Bravo, Supercub! One of the coolest and classiest cartridges of all time...chambered in a ratty old Remington...with the extra-cool alternate designation of the cartridge cut on the barrel (is that original?)...and then you put that stock on it! Outstanding!

I am a wimp. I find myself enjoying smaller cartidges as I get older. By the time I get to your age, I'll be shooting a 22RF for everything.

Yes, and Marg's breakfast is the same, no sugar but with milk and crushed walnuts or pecans, yet she kills everything with 180s at 2700, including 2300 pound woods bison.
Two shots from 150 yards or so, and it was all over. You have seen the video, as well as eaten breakfast with us.
Perhaps the wimp 30-06 is really all most of us need.

How would one measure efficiency in this question? Would it be the ratio of powder weight to FPS?
For me
, I utilize a slightly different set of criteria to determine efficiency. I like, I want, I 'need', get & use

Most people worried about 3000ft/sec are buying premium factory or reloading. In the long run reloading is the way. I don't buy any premium factory, most factory i buy is for brass.
The 308 nm, with handloads, can be pushed into factory 300wm territory, as can the 300 WSM. When you break down handloading cost》》》$1/ for premium projectile, $1/box primer, less than 1/4lb powder($10), and brass replacement. So conservatively 5 loads/brass》》》say at most $10/box.......believe that gets me to $41/20. Last time in Walmart Win silver box crap ammo was $35/box.
Just looking at my costs, if we are still fantasizing about efficiency in 300 mags, the largest cost is projectile, not powder.
Really, if you go hunting, any gear choice is irrelevant, perhaps short of $150k truck/camper/quads. The real cost is firstly precious time off, then fuel. Most of my hunting is one shot, so with handloads just over $2, or premium factory as much as $4-6.
The 300wm is not uncommon as a target round, were bulk cost is important. However, i can't help approaching this from the perspective of a hunter.
