SKS losing accuracy with a Tapco Stock?

Does this pin occur in any of the original Russian hardwood birch stocks, or just the later laminates?

I meant the pin in the front, above the magazine:

Here, it is marked with "2". Looks like it serves as a front support and blocks the movement of the receiver/barrel.

I think the pin near the grip was added to prevent splitering/cracking.

Thanks for the info... I'll have to look into replacing that pin. Either with another pin, or a steel block glued into the stock so I don't have to drill a hole through it.

Great. Let me know if you need any further info that might help.

Also, guys, if anyone do either of those mods, please drop a post here and let us all know how it goes.

Btw, anyone knows if there is any practical need in that little spring that pops out trigger group when you push in the release knob? I mean, if it does anything to actually hold trigger group in place or to make sure there is no shifting/rattle? As far as I know - plastic stocks don't have this spring, right?

If it does anything besides popping the trigger group out - might be a good idea to install it on the plastic stock too.

It probably does hold it to some degree, however I plan on bedding that part of my stock (I didn't put the spring in and it does shift up and down). My trigger group comes out fine without the spring and I would much rather trust a solid surface over a spring

Guys on russian forums had some improvement in accuracy after installing into plastic stocks the huge metal pin that is fixed in the original wooden stock and is missing in all plastic/replacement stocks. This pin is the second main point of support for the whole receiver body.

Makes total sense to me and I have allways suspected this as well.

BTW thanx for the link I will have to install Google translator again but it looks intersting. :)

Btw, is there even a place/hole to put this spring in on the plastic stocks?

Aramir, I have an ATI side folding stock for the SKS that has a hole for the trigger group spring, but ATI made it too small to insert the spring (go figure) But I imagine you could simply drill a hole in any stock that doesnt have it. I found the spring helps pop the trigger group out, whereas I have to pull up on it when in the ATI stock without the spring. And I had a look at my SKS's action and it seems the portion of the window that gets clearanced is right in front of the ejector, as visible in the pics you posted. I imagine it stops the empty casing from ejecting clearly to the side, forcing it to go up instead.

This was my experience as well, hole was there but the spring just would not fit. I have decided to bed that area with the rest of the stock

bedding would be the best bet for sure. I find the sides of the stock are a bit tight and need to be spread a little to install, but the action slid back and forth a lot. I built up some epoxy infront of the reciever and now its a tight fit, the only play is the rear of the reciever lifts up and down a little bit. I ve been playing with mounting a full size Leupold 3-9x40 on the scout scope mount so I really need to try this ejection window mod!

ultralight, modern civilian chinese SKS-D. The barreled action is in the garage, Im gonna go at it with the die grinder and see if the ejection window mod works!
