SKS market collapse is it true?

Remember that recent war in the middle East? Where the strongest military force the world has ever known tried to eradicate a rag tag militia group called the "Taliban" over a ten year period........guess what the Taliban still there. It's called gorilla warfare, and it works.

Oh, and SKS's rock.

Gorilla warfare only works when the modern military has combat constraints placed upon them, militarily they will need to carpet bomb the cities, towns and villages in to the stone ages, think about WW2 Germany and Japan, not muck left of any of there cities and towns, Vietnam and Iraq, cities and the civilian populations largely left in tact, still lots of fight left. This tactic of strategic strikes does not work, the Romans learned this thousands of years ago destroy everything and you will break the enemies will to fight, if a nation is truly at war it must destroy as much of the enemy as possible that means fighting men, the women, the old, the young, everything.

It's Guerilla, boys. Guerilla.

The SKS seems to be one of the most common rifles in Canada. There are about 3 million gun owners in Canada. If a quarter of them owned one SKS each you would be around the 750 000 mark.

That's news, I thought there were more like 6 million gun owners, gonna have to get more family and friends interested!
Edit, just looked it up approx 7 million gun owners in Canada and approx 1.2 mil. Restricted .
Justine wants to pay attention to us. That is a lot of Votes!

There're about 2 million licensed gun owners in Canada. And probably another 2 millions or so unlicensed gun owners. The numbers you saw Bob were the number of registered guns, both restricted and non-restricted, at the time of the scrapping of the LGR, not total gun owners.

I don't think they care as firearms don't meet their agenda, they bank on giving social programs to new immigrants for their votes.

Interesting point of view and I am curious to hear about the disadvantages that you speak of, I have a few both in D models and M56's, they beat out my AR's on performance and reliability, they are stronger than any like style platform out there, they go bang every time I pull the trigger, and at 100 meters Herman the German gets riddled with FMJ's, the platform is so solid and versatile that I built three medium range hunting rifles out of them and they are perfect out to 300 meters which is further than needed for the average hunt as the energy delivered at that range will still knock any deer smaller than a moose, as well as a black bear, flat on its back.

In a nutshell the rifle is a great rifle in the hands of a competent user and can be adapted to suit any need you want even to the use of optics. The caliber is efficient and cheap as well as being a very underrated hunting caliber, I even had a Savage Model 14 built in the caliber with a 22 barrel that reaches out comfortably to 500 meters using Hornady's SST rounds.

Its greatest attribute would naturally be as that of a JIKSA carbine, low maintenance even with the use of corrosive ammo, cheap on ammo, reliable under all conditions, light recoil vs anything else out there so that even ones kids can use them, easy to load during stressed situations, and just as easy to point and shoot, no other non restricted carbine can offer one the same attributes so I would really like to hear what you see as a downside to making this rifle the backbone of anyone's collection.

I agree and would love to see those setups, thread spin off?

I see now where you got your number and I don't think we will be able to find a definite #. Here is another source!
The National Firearms Association Estimate of the Number of Firearms and Owners in Canada

The National Firearms Association has come to conclusion there are approximately 7 million owners with 21 million firearms. Our figures were calculated using three different methods.

1. There were 1,221,179 restricted firearms in the RCMP registration database FRAS in December 1993. The unrestricted to restricted firearms ratio is at least 20:1. Conservatively that means 24.4 million unrestricted plus 1.2 million restricted firearms. Allowing for errors in the RCMP's FRAS registration system, we strike off 220,000 registered firearms as non-existent, reducing the total to 21 million firearms with 7 million owners.

2. The government's own estimate in December 1976, published as part of its gun control campaign was 6 million owners with 18 million firearms. During hearings on the Campbell bill, officials from the Ministry of Justice testified that the long-term average net annual importation was 190,000 firearms. Therefore, adding 190,000 firearms per year to the 1976 total of 18 million, we get 21.6 million firearms as of December 1993. Subtract 610,000 firearms as an allowance for firearms destroyed, dismantled or worn out and we arrive back at the 21 million figure with 7 million owners.

3. Restricted firearms ownership increased from 861,000 in December 1984 to 1.22 million in December 1993. This is an increase of 41.7% over nine years. Those figures are solid because they are taken from the Annual Report on the Commissioner of the RCMP. The NFA estimates that the 1976 figure for total firearms owned, 18 million increased to 21 million by 1993, representing a total increase of only 16.6% in 17 years. This, obviously, is a very conservative estimate.

None of the above estimates include any figures for illegally imported firearms, which are known to have increased sharply each time restrictive, costly, and/or vague legislation has made legal firearm ownership more complicated, expensive and/or more risky.

Yeah Bayern lake Canadian tire has a ton of beat up painted black ones for 229.99 I was looking for the blued ones for 189.99 like the other guy was talking about

Nope, Canadian tire, both places! Sales have slumped for them!

I can't speak for those Canadian tires, but I had a conversation with a guy behind the counter at a local Canadian tire and he said that only the hunting guns were selling well and that anything "tactical" was a slow mover. Perhaps, Canadian Tires are not the go to place for the SKS? Prices were kind of high at this location too though.

Or maybe there just needs to be more new shooters to accomadate all the SKS? Lol

My local CT can't keep them in stock at $229. Low end refurbs, but with five FN reserves locally and a strong gun owner population it isn't surprising. It is a popular firearm with our FN people, which makes me think the powers that be will have a hard time if they decide to ban it.

CTC would not be my first goto location for anything firearm related..

I'd rather pay 239 for something a little more on the premium side at Westrifle with free shipping than save 20 bucks and get something that looks like it got run over and painted black with bbq paint. Just sayin...

If its a gun you want and in decent condition, why squabble over $10.00-20.00. You'll kick yourself once they are all gone at those prices.

Where are these blued $189 sks's you speak of? I'm from ns too and all I can find is $229 black bbq paint sks's that are beat to hell
Go to Bayers lake CTC, tell them you want to see some blued SKS they have lots, last time I was there they were $189. 3 weeks ago, the laminate stock are more,, not sure how much cause I mostly like the birch stock!

A dealer couldn't pay me to take one.

After owning and shooting a bunch of them, seeing what their advantages and disadvantages are, I have zero interest in the platform.

I got the ol SKS out of my system when I got my first Chinese back in 1992. I mail ordered some 30 round banana clip adaptor for it.....you would get 7 rounds in it and the 8th one would pop out the top, lol, ....I have zero interest these days as well

^^^^ Agreed and if there was an issue they will step up

I bought a good few from Westrifle, Mosins too! Good product, no problems, and in BC the prices are higher but down here that are quite cheap and I got 7 non refurb SKS in very nice shape for $169-$179 a piece, one of them 1953 izzy is on this site in another thread, and I didn't have to pay shipping! From Westrifle I got a couple non refurb and also a heavy refurb 49, all at a great price, but shipping kills the great deals sometimes! If I take my time I find what I need local now, no shipping! What changed things is the downfall of the registry, it took some time but more LGS started bringing in more firearms, before that most of us here had to buy online if we wanted something different like SKS, the farther you go west of course there was more to chose from, much more! Still is, but when I get the chance to save $35 for shipping and can pick through the rifles,,, no contest!

Amen

Bob - $239 at Westrifle includes shipping, at least to Ontario.
The only down side is the Westrifle mags are welded plug magazines. Ugly gun or ugly mag? I know which I'd choose. YMMV
