Sks new russian way

CHESNOKOV is his name-meaning garlic, but also meaning truth in slang

This killed me once. I was laughing so badly, I had my jaw dislocated.
Anyways, it was an experiment for me, not the way to be cool or smth.
After all, my first gunsmith experience.
If I were to have some extra tools I would install a threaded muzzle brake.
I know how to do it, but do not want to buy extra devices at this time.

Basically, whole project was done with minimal tools, "on the knees" as Russians say, no special equipment or even working table was used.

Yes, thats the name, thanks.
Thanks also to RobertMcC for the find. Great stuff! I have a screencap on my other comp I think. And of his rant re the AK-47 too.
OP, so you had seen the rant before starting your project? Glad you have a great sense of humour and didnt take offence to my comment. :)

I have no problem with this kind of mod, because if he ever gets sick of it he can always return the gun to original. What bothers me are people who cut and weld. I have A chinese sks that I bought with the intent to convert to AK-mag accepting. Haven't had the heart to do it especially since I am not allowed to use the full capacity of the original mag, why modify the gun to accept a larger mag that still only holds 5 rounds.
There is an answer to that :) For SHTF scenario, I guess, so it has a potential to accept larger cap. mags right away. Again, only in SHTF scenario of total collapse of LAW.

Well, I strongly believe, that the way the gun was designed is the best at that specific time.
I also think that hunting is always better with a wooden stock, because of aesthetics of it. After all, hunting is not about just going for wild meet. It's a philosophy, communication with nature, taking some extra risks, trying to play a relatively fair game compared to when a pig is killed and you just buy its meat in Cosco or something.
Now, I also think that the progress is moving ahead and changing a gun for specific purposes like: experimenting, modifying for the shooting range or preparing it for SHTF, all these may also take place, as long as there is a clear objective why the mod was done.
Having super cool scopes when you just shoot at 100 m on the range and that's it-I do not see the point of it.
If you hunt and your SKS shoots nicely at 200-300 yards and your scope helps-perfect, go for it.
I am going for 1.75 MOA red dot, because it's quite unlikely I'd be able to shoot it for longer distances than 100 yards and roughly 2 inch dot in diameter at 100 yards is more than enough for me.
This is my approach.

And of course-no offence, Chesnokov's comments are interesting, but his philosophy is a philosophy of a gun collector- aka- do not touch anything on your gun, I just partially agree with it.
I have an SKS-totally virgin- nothing is done to it-it is very beautiful the way it is if you enjoy historical and aesthetic prospectives.

The AK rant is the best.
Someone with incredible Internet skills can surely find it?

You guys are terrible! Enjoy your SKS your way, it's the Barbie Doll gun for the non restricted types!

This. Who cares what he does to his rifle. If it doesn't work, jokes on him. I don't think the OP is taking this rifle too seriously. As an side, credit to the OP for not taking the bait.

You do realize this is the milsurp form? The place where the historical aspects of a firearm trump the "Bolt on all this useless crap that prevents me from hitting largest side of barn" aspects.

I bet the most accurate thing on that rifle will be the muzzle brake (break? Should we start this again ? :D ) flying off and hitting the target
Forget ammo, buy nc star muzzle brakes.

You got me on this point. I didn't notice that this wasn't red rifles.

@ the OP, don't be overly bothered with the "ribbing" you're getting. If you want to actually try some smithing (bolting stuff on a gun isn't smithing), try the side ejection modification. The sks by design will fling spent casings with great force straight up in front and slightly to the right. If you wish that the casings eject to the right like an AK, AR. cut a 90 degree into the receiver where the ejection "port" is (its an sks, but you know what I mean).

This, IMHO is the only modification an sks could ever require.

Along with some trigger work...

3 SKS mods I'd like to see someone figure out (not necessarily on the same rifle):

1. Shorten the trigger mech to move the trigger closer to the mag well, allowing installation of a pistol grip under the action, instead of behind it.

2. Convert gas system from piston to DI

3. Figure out a good way to bed the rifle into the stock for accuracy.

Well you run into the issues with the AK, vertical grip getting in the way of rocking in the mag. Esp if you want it that close inwards.
