SKS: Optics, sights & mounts.... update feb 16, 2010

I just added a Predator drill and tap mount to my bubba sks. I had it to the range and test it out and had great results. The built in shell deflector worked great. I just had a red rot to try it out with, but I'm curious to try a full size scope. Here are a few pics....

100 yards red dot:

I really like you setup, where did you buy this kit? Thx.

Just Google baker tactical and it should come right up. I tried a full size scope a couple days ago with great results. The sks is much more accurate than I would have expected. I really like this rail system.

Here is my set up

It's a "MOLOT SKS/Mosin-Nagant Original Rail with Rivets" that I screw down and used red loctite
with a "BP-02 SVD to Weaver Mount, Centered" quick release scope mount
The scope is a cheap Bushnell.

Here is how it look with the rail:

and here is with the weaver mount and a Bushnell scope

Sorry for the crappy pictures, if there is interest, I will take better pictures

Anyone in Toronto interested in helping me out with drilling and tapping my SKS to fit one of these mounts?
I moved my tools into storage out of town and am living in a shoebox condo downtown. Grrr.
I want to get a sight onto the rifle and want it accurate.

What do you think is a better way to handle the issue? I will sell that mount.

I have this mount that I bought at Canada Ammo and am not impressed with the rear pin either. A flimsy soft metal with a dinky little screw with 2.5 mm Allen key holes to tighten. Right out of the box the hole on the screw was over sized so the screw would not tighten. The Allen key just slipped. So I took a 3mm and used a Dremmel to cut one to fit. What a pain. I sent an E-mail to the maker to see if you can get replacement pins...crickets...no response after over a week. As well to get the pin out you have to use a punch and then it messes with the hole and threads where the screw goes in and the couple times I have had to remove the pin as I am doing an extensive mod on my SKS and the pin seems soft material getting gouged and scratched. I worry when I start to shoot the gun that it would shear or at least deform from the recoil forces. As well if I end up with a jam or problem in the field as I am making my gun into a brush gun for deer, wolf etc. I would have to carry those stupid Allen keys a punch and hammer to open it up. Not a very practical setup.

So I took a spring clevis pin and machined it to the exact receiver cover hole size and it works like a charm. I can pull the pin easily even with gloved hands in the cold in the dead of winter. Not pretty to look at but I can easily remove it anytime I want in the field or on the bench when I want to clean my rifle. Maybe you can pass this on to the manufacturer and they can make a similar pin maybe a little better looking one but for the $130 we are paying for these I thought they could do better than they have. Here are some pics: (Sorry no stock yet, am refinishing it will be done in a couple days and then will post finished gun in the SKS mods thread)

Ljones i like what you did for a tool less solution but will it handle a pounding? I used a grade 8 bolt in mine. The owner/engineer ect of the magwedge is on CGN and when i posted that the pin didnt even fit in my reciever he got a hold of me and shipped me a new (diff sized) one free. But its still the same situation gotta drive it out with a punch. I clean my rifle after every use and ill take two 10mm wrenches and pull the bolt out anyday over undoing two screws and driving a pin out.

Will it take the pounding? Only time will tell but I can make these any time I want. What ticked me off is I sent MagWedge an email at their site and no reply. I will look into sourcing a grade 8 spring clevis pin. I am pretty sure they make them. But this should work for now at least.

Just installed the Wartak rail. Love the way it looks, i'm surprised how good it looks compared to some of the other rails I've seen, there are some ugly ones. Hope to sight it in tomorrow and see if it holds zero.

yeah I figurd they were a carbon copy from the pictures. wonder who will get the patent rights first?

how is the rail attached to the part that bolts to the receiver. solid piece or spot welded like the magwedge?

I just had a thought: why not a bridge mount that attaches to the side picatinny rail of the ATI stock?

The picatinny rail of the ATI stock looks rock solid because of the immovable way the stock fits onto the front of the rifle. I haven't found a bridge mount that attaches to a side picatinny rail, but if one existed I could see that working quite well as an mounting option.
