SKS: Optics, sights & mounts.... update feb 16, 2010

WE went the easy route on these SKS's... UTG Tri-Rail receiver covers were filed down for very tight fit... installed bolt buffers and "scope-protecting" shell deflectors... mounted UTG 4X32mm Bug Busters... this inexpensive set-up is holding up... POI has not moved yet... thru 500 rounds (fingers crossed), pinned mag (5 shot), 1" butt pads, and Choate cheek pieces;

Where did you get the cheek piece? I tried looking around on the web and I don't see one made for the original SKS stock. Thanks.

Well I had this kicking around for the last year, it was suppose to go on my mosen but well it ended up on the 150$ sks lol

one thing only the cross hairs are a bit blurry any reason for that ?

This thread is great. I am looking for an opinion here. I have recently purchased (and installed) some equipment for my SKS, including a NcStar-SKS-Scope-Tri-Mount. I am a nube at this stuff and am looking for ideas for optics/toys to mount to this. I was thinking sight/laser but welcome input of opinions and experience from a group I consider to be knowledgeable about such things.

Thanks in advance.

Just put a red dot on it. It's an SKS, will never be a precision firearm lol

That is moreless where I was headed. I just use it for taking the kids out and burning through ammo, putting holes in pie plates!! Would like it to look cool too! I am leaving one the way it came and pimping out the other one.

I was just checking out some war-images over at CNN and was surprised to see this:

Is that a crappy SKS mount with a Leoupold? (I'm not a scope guy, I just saw the gold-band on the front).

The problem with the Tri-Mount is it will not hold a zero with out modification (see post 135) the best set up would be the Scout mount (see post 126) I've tried both and like the scout set up best

Lots of talk about where to get rear sights, but not too much guidance on where to buy front sites. I'm going to get the TS200 peep sight from Hi Cal for the rear and would like a good fiber optic for the front. Or the something Williams I've read about?

Anyone have any links on where and what to get? I also wouldn't mind getting a decent rubber butt pad that's black for the original stock. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks

Chole will hook you up and it would work perfectly even more so in thoughs low light, no light enviroments that some times the sks is required to work in...
Plus check that store for the rubber goodie that you are looking for ;)

This post is for you guy's that want to have a shell defector and also use the rear sight mount.
It uses the ventend handguard as a mounting point and works perfectly with your utg handguard rail and also with the rear sight rail options out there except it does need to be monorly modified to fit.

Yes Joyce that is a paratroper bayonet on this Russian SkS :p

This is the slight mod that required the use of my metal shears to get it seated underneath the rail and around the mounting leg of the optic.

Here it is installed completely on said rifle ;)

My question is this...
The SKS is such a short rifle, it looks as if the receiver mounts are to close to the butt to be used comfortably, and the ones based on the rear leaf are to far forward. Ergonomically they just look awkward. Anybody??

A lot of the SKS scope mounts are junk, like the "dust cover" ones, absolute rubbish. Chote mount is one of the best options however in my personal needs I always want the "iron sights" to still be useable in case you have a scope failure. The second one is the Scout Scope mount which replaces your Tangent sight however you of course lose the use of your tangent sight.

The only other viable solution is that huge Tril-rail slip on thing by UTG Leapers, it has a "channel" which allows you to still use your tangent sight however every time you break down the rifle, you have to "re-sight" your scope. One other con is that the sight/scope will be WAY down the rifle. So people with bad eyes will not like this option.

I was just glancing at this thread and thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth.
Check out the Weaver Convert-a-mount. A few options depending on how high you want the base to sit with reference to the body cover and how high you want the scope to sit in relation to the irons i.e low or high. My base is high with a low mount, can't use irons with scope on. I could put on a higher mount if i wanted to use the open sights at the same time. Apologies if someone already mentioned this setup.
I've cleaned up the bottom edge of the base to make it straight since pics were taken so no more step on the base.

The hole is too big for a 1/4x20 tap. It measures 15/64 on my russian. I used m7x1mm tap. very nice threads. the 1/4x20 would be too shallow of a cut IMO.

I am now a convert and part of the 1% that knows that the reciever cover can be made 100% stable for a sight and it will hold a zero,,,

Rock solid, and can be taken off for cleaning, replaced, fired, no need to re-zero,, I'll add pictures once I take a couple

This is from Marcus on Survivers SKS Boards. Total cost 1 x 1/4-20 round head bolt

Guys, there is an alternative. Use my 1/4-20 button head adaption and she will hold zero and is removable for cleaning.
1. Remove the dust cover pin, bolt, carrier and spring. (pin will need to ground)
2. Replace the dust cover.
3. Do not drill the hole. Tap a 1/4-20 (or finer) hole all the way out the other side from right to left. THE DUST COVER MUST BE ON WHEN YOU DO THIS. Or the threads won't line up properly.
4. Screw in the 1/4-20 heat treated, button head. Cut it off close to flush. Take it off, trim it, blue the end.
5. Put it all back together and go sight her in.
