SKS: Optics, sights & mounts.... update feb 16, 2010

There is an improved mount like the one stated, Zahal sells it however very expensive and very heavy. Probably why it held zero and it actually worked.

Perun Arms from the Czech Rep is the firm that makes it, improved version of the NcStar.

I'm content to just boil out the barrel and gas tube after shooting corrosive; I've never seen any sign of rust inside the receiver. I'm keen on the low-profile mount because I'd like to keep height-over-bore to a minimum. I'd like to just put a reflex sight on it for my father's sake; this particular rifle stays at his place, and he likes a reflex sight because of his bifocals.

I've seen the Perun Arms sight, but I'm reluctant to spend $156.85 plus tax on a $150 rifle (what I paid, anyway; I know I could get double that now), and I don't want to dig the set screws into the receiver.

If I'm feeling particularly ambitious, I might see if I can bed the thing into its ATI side-folder.

so what's the concensus on the magwedge full length top rail (or other manufactures)

are these units fitting tight enough that they are worth putting a decent optic on?

Generally yes, they can be made even better by swaping out the stock bolts for countersink ones. The thicker the rail the better. The Magwedge I had was too thin and the elected casings deflecting off the mount would cause it to vibrate. Making the reticle slightly fuzzy for a few seconds after a shot. It annoyed me enough that i bought a Wartak rail... it didnt have the same issue.

thanx!
that helps me ;)

Has anybody ever thought about sticking an aftermarket M1 carbine sight onto the receiver cover? Not sure how much you'd have to wind out the front sight post to make up the extra height.

Hey Bacon, A while back Ganderite did a mod with a sight off an Enfield ( http s://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2042353-Real-World-SKS-Results?highlight=sks ) and I 'copied' that using just a v-small washer that I attached with epoxy on a 'spare' recvr cover. So far it sticks there, had to buff off painted finish. Luckily it co-aligns with the iron sights so now I have a 'Quick-shot' peep sight and can also use the OEM irons. Still only good for about 4-5MOA at 50 or 100 yds - 71 yrs-old eyes / 70 yr old rifle.

Yes, u need a molot styled rail to do this tho.

This one to be exact.

The more common version of molot rails ull see a lot of are styled similar to what i have on mine. But those will only accommodate SVD, AK and some Universal mounts.... but not the Universal mounts that have the central locking cam... which confusingly can appear as and be marketed as "AK mounts"

That's an interesting idea. A simpler solution though, would be to install a Tech Sights rear aperture site. It mounts on a bolt that replaces the receiver latch.

You can get two versions: one with two apertures (and only windage adjustments) to handle different ranges, or one with one aperture and both elevation and windage adjustments.

There is also a ghost ring aperture you can buy that comes with differently sized inserts.

Cheers,
Neil

If anybody has a line on who has these Molot rails available let me know. The only place online I can find is Ivan Tactical and they have been out of stock for quite some time.

I purchased mine off ebay. Took abit to get here but I did get it.

Still waiting on mine... unfortunately it came from russia... but says it was released from russia on the 14th of feb, silence since. Tried to open a claim, but ebay has froze the users funds to even credit me back hahah. Some farmer is riding their tractor with my molot mount in their cupholder I'm sure! Lol.

Hahaha!

It takes a while. I ordered the molot rail and a pso scope and it said for the longest time it was released from Russia and Belarus.
Expect over a month for sure.
