SKS Prototype stock (update 02-02-2014) post 244

I think we are both on the same page.

I understand this is your project, but constructive criticism can be very helpful and beneficial.

You design is good, but the top piece over the receiver seems to be for looks, rather than function, almost an unnecessary feature. I can see problems with case ejection due to the nature of the SKS. Modifications to the receiver ejection port with be need to be done if you wish to retain it.

All you need is this for the top of the receiver.

I think some will agree with me.

But if your hell-bent on the idea, go for it.

If at first you don't succeed, call it version 1.0 and move on!

I wish i could do stuff like this... i might be able to draw it on paper but i dont have the technical skills to do it on the computer. I'd like to design something for the SKS, M305 and CZ, but when it comes to that computer stuff i am slightly retarded haha

lol , each person have it skill , it like cooking some are very good cook and other...

like someone says if the first prototype don't work , we call it 1.0 , it may take many version , but i know a thing if my prototype work it may be possible to modify the lower and do a different upper , sure it will be just a sks , but in canada where the number of gun available is limited , we need some new possibility to upgrade the platform , the ar is good for the ergonomic but you cant go in the wood with ,

we need some gun maker that will build some non-rest gun , it may be possible to design a new receiver ,new style and use the piece of a another for the mechanic , a non restricted Canadian made rifle will be a great thing ,

maybe i will win the lottery tonight and tomorrow build my shop ...

Agreed.

It is in my nature to over-think every detail and strive for "first shot" success. It works very well for me in my line of work.

Viewing this thread makes me want to get back into my draftsman training. I haven't used Autodesk software for 6 years now. I installed my student version of AutoCADD one day and was completely lost. lol. Completely forgot the commands.

I hope you pull through to the end and make a prototype. Fizzled projects die easy... I know.

I have 15 years experience in 3D modeling so i know a lot about it, but not so much in gunsmithing or machining.

I do recommend that Dad003 creates a prototype asap out of cheap/disposable metal or hell, even resin and start working from there. It's easy to get a feel for the look of it outside, but inside it's another ballgame.

If you take out the stock of the SKS, take out all the internals and fill up all the holes with something and then take out the stock, you're left with a negative (or positive?) of the internal space and thats stuff you have to keep in mind when making custom stocks like these. A lot of your weight savings is in there, having the proper hole placements, having enough bulk metal where the recoil will hit the hardest, magazine well... ouch...

It's a lot to think about!

for the moment i was thinking to redraw the major party of the upper rail and the lower , with featurecam software it seem to be a very long machining time for the lower , this week i will work on it , in 3 week i move to Edmonton after this i will probably look forward with this , someone recommend a shop for making a cheap prototype resin/plastic model ?

will try to simplify the whole thing for the machining and fabrication , i will enlarge the ejection port , will try to make it more lightweight ,

Added some hole centre to centre 3/4 for the picatinny rail it seem to be the standard , i put some sight for seeing what it can be look

^^ Cant please everyone all the time. Sometimes SOMETHING has to be sacrificed. In this case youd have to sacrifice the coolest looking SKS stock ever made for no stripper clips. Darn.

the beauty with my things is if it work really good i can always , make some variant , shorten the handguard , new upper , new handguard , the first one is always harder to do

If you make your setup compatible with like AR15 parts, you're gonna have a real winner here.

You know the guy who made that AR mag adapter for the SKS? Might wanna talk to him to maybe incorporate his design into your stock in like a variant version of your setup.

the problem with the AR mag adapter is it require some machining and big modification to the sks and not every one can dot it , but it may possible do to a variant for it , for the moment i use the ar15 buffer tube, stock , and pistol grip , and you can put your favourite sight on it , it the ultimate stock for the sks , and i'm thinking to add my custom mag release that ad some ergonomic , you can see it here http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?731421-My-russian-SKS ,

yesterday i look for the machining time and it seem to be to expensive for that operation , have to check for the polymer and i think a injection/moulded fabrication method will be the best for a cheap cost.

Have to add some reinforcement in some place and it will be good to go for the next operation

Perhaps a barrel tensioner a la the Archangel Mosin stock? That would be an easy piece to manufacture and would enable folks to either free-float, or add tension to the barrel, whatever performs best for their rifle. Good luck with the project, looks very interesting.

For a complete field strip, you will need to remove the pistol grip to get at the detent behind the trigger guard.

I like the look of the stock. It reminds me of the Troy-produced stock for the M1A. Also, it would be neat to see Magpul sights up on top of that rail.
